Most people haven’t used a phone one handed for years and value solid battery life and a large screen. I firmly believe the mini should have been marketed as a budget device/SE with 4g, single camera and a cheaper price point. But ultimately I think apples intention was to use the mini to raise the price points of the standard 12/13 and it worked.
I completely agree. Had the Mini come out with less features and a lower price point from the start then I think it would have been a success. I get what Apple was doing by offering a no compromise device. But it didn't work. But I think there is still potential here with a different strategy.

I believe it would have sold better if the premium features were also included. But the SE will replace it by next year anyway.

I think it made sense to skip the Mini this year. Only the 14 Pro's got the A16's, the regular 14's still have the same processor as the 13 Mini. I'm not sure an upgrade would have made sense this year so keeping it for sale with the price drop was absolutely the right move.

The Mini 13 has been my favorite iPhone in a long time simply because you can use it with one hand. I hope they continue with it every other year. It's hard to say what direction Apple goes with. If they want to keep a low cost phone in the lineup that has an LCD and lower quality cameras, then I hope that stays with the SE. I prefer the Mini having a higher quality screen and cameras close to the higher end models.

I reckon it would have been a lot more popular if they had sold it with an LCD panel and a single camera module to bring it down to $499 on release.

I agree. I understand why Apple just made it a no compromise iPhone. But that didn't work. So if it stays in the lineup it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
