Send it to me, I'll make sure to find the owner for you. JK
Its up to you if you want to go through the hassle of going to the police to report a lost and found. Quite frankly, I wouldn't fault you if you didn't. They're busy, you might be busy yourself. And long as you put up the notice for a month or so, you should be able to keep it.

Wow, lots of replies!

My wifi isn't password protected, and as someone said, I flipped up the control center and hit wifi and it connected.

Still not a peep from anyone from the flier. I have a feeling if I take it to police they'll just confiscate it and end up keeping it.

I'm going to take it to my Apple Store as soon as the crowds die down. I was at the mall today and they're seemingly only letting people in if you want a phone. If you want anything else there's a separate line.

I'm not waiting in a line to get this resolved as of this moment.

I just figured if someone lose their iPad they would notice the flier! It's almost unheard of.

I'm wondering, as someone else mentioned, if maybe someone stole it and just put it there? I'm not sure. It's an odd situation. But i'll be going to my Apple Store early next week.

I'm not really sure why people are accusing the OP of wanting to keep it. Unless it's running iOS 6, it's of no use to him anyway. Even if he wipes it the device will be stuck on the screen asking for the former owner's AppleID and password.

My thinking is that once the iPad owner found out that he didn't have the iPad with him, he traced his steps, and may not have paid attention to posted notices. If he didn't see the iPad, he kept tracing his steps. After not seeing the iPad, he probably thought someone found it took it for themselves.

The owner probably isn't tech savvy and doesn't have knowledge of Find my iPhone. And since the owner lost the iPad, and since someone could have easily found it and taken it for themselves, the owner doesn't have the motivation to go looking for other ways to get his iPad back. The owner doesn't know about Find my iPhone technology, and he won't start looking for such a feature if he doesn't even know it exists.

I would keep waiting with the iPad on wifi, and wait for the owner to find out about Find my iPhone, and, if the option is enabled, the owner can send a message to the iPad and locate it. That, and taking it to the Apple store, are the most you can do at this point.

How many police departments allocate resources to lost phones or tablets?

Wouldn't be nice if you mailed it to or brought it to apple and they contact the registered owner. Since they won't tell anyone, even police.

You can see I quite specifically referred to a stolen tablet. Not lost. You can bet that if somebody was mugged resources will have been allocated and the crime recorded, and the police will be very happy to reunite stolen property with the victim.

Nevertheless, my local police have procedures for handling valuable property brought in off the street, I'm sure yours do too. Whether the owner would bother to contact the police though is quite doubtful. If you lost your tablet would you assume it ended up in the hands of someone as decent as the OP?

If you take it to Apple, I doubt they would even accept it. They seem to have very hands-off policies when it comes to things like this.

Someone called!

It was a woman. She said she just noticed the flier and described the iPad. I'm going to meet with her tomorrow and if she can unlock it all hers.

Well isn't this a nice story. Well done AnthonySmith for making the world a nicer place. :)

Thanks for the info.
I am sure every police department has procedures.

If I had lost an iPad yea I would hope to have someone go through great lengths to return it. When I had an iPad taken out of my backpack I knew would never see it again. Find my iPad had a location of a nearby McDonald's and my iTunes account was hit twice with password violations.
Boston police had me fill out a report and put it in the stack

Anthony brought up a couple of possibilities if he turned it in police. It could very well happen.

I wonder if asking Siri "Who am I?" Would have given you the woman's contact information.

So it was hers. I returned it to her Sunday morning. How funny.

She offered me a reward which at first I refuted but she insisted mentioning its hard to find honest people in today's society. I took it.

Thanks for the thumbs up and the suggestions guys.

Now back to enjoying my iPhone 6!

:apple:

Ok then turn it over to Apple store they know passcode anyway. :apple:
Please. Apple doesn't know and has no way of finding out the passcode of a phone belonging to a killer who shot over 40 people. Do you think they know the passcode of an iPad that someone found in the street?

I know this is a very old post but I recently found an iPad in a dumpster of an apartment building someone had thrown away. I want to keep it for myself bc I don't have money to buy one. I'm gonna let my daughter use it for videos to keep her busy as she goes to work with me scrapping everyday. It has a passcode on it. Someone tell me how to get by this. I can't believe that it could be totally useless to someone else. Could I possibly set up an iTunes or icloud account for myself? What about the dfu mode? Someone help? Thx

Hey everyone!

So about 3 weeks ago I found this iPad in my apartment complex. It was really odd.

I went to get the mail and it was sitting on top of the trash can (!) with it's leather folio case open. I looked around for a few minutes and thought, is this some sting operation?

Someone else came to get their mail and I said are you missing something and they looked at me like I was crazy.

So the next day I put up fliers at both of the mail stations in my apartment complex. I didn't want to give it away and have random people claiming it's their iPad. So the flier simply said...

"FOUND: VERY VALUABLE ITEM!!! PLEASE CONTACT XXX XXX-XXXX"

It has since been over 2 weeks and nobody has claimed it. I was going to maybe search through the contacts and get in touch with whomever they've most recently contacted, but it has a passcode. I've had it on my WiFi the entire time so they could track it down via 'Find My iPhone'.

Still nothing.

What do I do next? I'm tempted to just keep it? It's a white Mini. I already have an Air so I don't really have a use for it.

What should I do?
If you don’t want it, you could always see if you can wipe and reset it and then gift it to someone or a charity shop?

Or, even return it to the owner, which is what the OP reported (now 5 years ago), see post #37

@Stephmartin - Feel free to try DFU mode to restore the iPad. Easy enough to find the steps for how to do that.
But, lots of failures, too, if it goes into activation lock (because the real owner had Find My iPad enabled)
You will know when it asks for a passcode for an AppleID that you don't know. It will, after a few tries, lock you out completely. Apple won't help, because you are not the original owner. It is then a paperweight (and not a very good one, at that)
But, you can try -- maybe you will be lucky.
(and, you may find out why you found it in a dumpster  )

Damn it! Didn’t see the dates...

Nobody here will help you. If the iPad isn't yours and has a passcode/activation lock you're SOL
