People confused about no icon change in iOS 9: I'm pretty sure it changes once you subscribe to Apple Music

It will come as part of the 8.4 update on June 30th. Also, it will likely come for those on iOS 9 beta with beta 3 update, which should be out the day before the 8.4 release.

...All those colors represent something. Red is music, purple is iTunes Store, bright blue/green is videos, etc. It makes a lot of sense. Sadly that idea breaks down because the music app has the same gradient. Would be nice for iTunes and Music to be more differentiated, this would have been a good chance. Leave the Music app red and it would have been clear why the iTunes icon is multicolor.

That's more what I was getting at. On its own, in isolation, the new logo looks fine and the mixed colors all have meaning. It's like the Music product manager alone, designed the icon and it all made perfect sense to him: "Those multiple color gradients really pop, yeah? Makes my baby stand out, huh?" All quite clever

Where it stops making sense is when it is placed in context: On a crowded, multicolor desktop, surrounded by numerous other icons all jockeying to stand out themselves. Then it just looks weak.

As a famous architect once said:
Eliel Saarinen said:
Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context – a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan.

It just feels like Apple isn't paying as much attention to the big picture as it once did.

More importantly. Who cares? It's an icon. First world problems at their peak.
Based on your post number and not accounting for repeat posters, about 40 people cared when you asked. Most issues and topics addressed on a tech forum about an aesthetically-driven company are going to be first world problems. Who cares?

I have always disliked the iOS 7/8 music icon. I personally wish they would have kept the "iPod" icon, But I see why they changed it. I think the new music icon takes the focus away from the icon and focuses it on the music note.

I updated my music icon because I missed the classic iPod too much too haha

So many of us wanted iTunes to be broken up but that'll probably not happen.

But your post gave me an idea. All those colors represent something. Red is music, purple is iTunes Store, bright blue/green is videos, etc. It makes a lot of sense. I thought the colors were supposed to represent Music, Radio, and Connect.

Anyways, I like it. Besides, the icon design is minor. It doesn't impact the performance or value of an app.

I guess it's time to reopen "Jony Ive Redesigns Things"'s tumblr page:

More seriously, for once I can understand the use of gradient shades, representing all the various kinds of music into a single app. And as usual, we complain and in a few months we won't even bother.
I remember we were all complaining about the Safari icon in iOS 7 and in the end lots of us actually like it now.

And for those interested, here is the history of the iTunes logo over time:

I think I like 2014 the best... 2001 is by far the ugliest.

My fav was 2003. I recently restored an old Mac with a disk image from 2005/2006. It was nice to see the old icon.

What was even nicer was how simple iTunes was back then.

I often replaced the horror of 2010–2013 with the following. As for the new icon, both the redrawn ‘eighth note’ glyph and colour palette are wonderful.

umm what? The current music icon was one of my favorites. The pink/red/orange perfectly captured the feeling of music imo. And it stood out. Now we're getting another white icon. I guess I can get use to the new one, but I'll always prefer the current one. What do you think about it? Also if you look closely, you'll see that the new icon shape has been redrawn.

Would there necessarily be a new icon for the Music app? Seems like the icon they used during the keynote could have been simply something associated with the Apple Music service, but not necessarily something that would affect the Music app itself. I guess we'll see, but I'm not completely sure there would necessarily be an app icon change.

Everything I seen suggests it's the new app icon. It's shown as the app icon a few times in the keynote. Also on the iOS 9 page. Also on the iPod touch on the Apple Music page.

Oh it’s happening.

Yeah, certainly appears more likely than I originally might have thought. That said, there have been times before when some things (perhaps not as "big" as an app icon) were tweaked on the iOS preview page as new betas would come out. Not to say that's likely by any means, but there's that too nonetheless.
