US Apple Store 64GB iPod Touch - $399
AU Apple Store 64GB iPod Touch - $549

So in the US there's a $100 difference between the iPod touch and the iPad.

You are comparing US tax free with AU tax inclusive. It is actually:

US Apple Store 64GB iPod Touch - US$399
AU Apple Store 64GB iPod Touch - AU$499

and that therefore means the AU WiFi 16GB will be $599 by your reckoning ;)

Edit: actually $AU623.75 by your reckoning.

Heh, thanks, I was trying to figure out the flaw in this fella's logic :)

(for those who are reading: Australia has a 10% GST so pre-GST of 550 is 500)

Also, if you compare the prices, you'll find that some products like the Shuffle trade sell at 30% more (wo/ustax) and the Mac Pro run at 45% more. You need to compare similar products, especially since the iPod Touch might be priced slightly differently to catch those who didn't want an iPhone.

Not all states in the US have sales tax, and those that do have variable tax rates.

$399 is the cheapest you can buy it in the US, and in AU the cheapest you can buy it is $549 (Since you have to pay tax no matter where you are).

Fair enough, that makes sense. It would seem that regardless of tax added on the US prices, the proportion would stay roughly the same. I'll go halfsies and say that the 16GB iPad will be $649.

Well, if you own a company, you can always get the company to buy it and claim the GST back on it...

Personally I'm still in favour of the AU$6.01 conversion from yen :D

But anyway....Sorry Xeno it still doesn't makes sense. You must do calculations on the tax free prices then add tax. It just doesn't make any sense to calculate differences based on taxed/untaxed prices.

Far out, I must be tired, I can't even think straight. Just tell me who wins this argument so I can go to sleep?

Well by applying Xeno's logic to the right amounts the result is AU$686.13 incl GST. So I win by AU$0.12 :D

Really though? It's all just wild speculation really. We will know soon enough :)

It doesn't matter if it's a loss leader or not. The pricing will still be consistent internationally, even if the product is cheaper compared to Apple's normal pricing structures.

Have a look at the international prices for the Apple TV.

It is much cheaper in the USA when you compare similarly priced products.

i was under the impression that australia had an import tax on electronic goods too? maybe we need to factor that in too?

Xeno effectively already took that into account by comparing the prices of existing products and using the difference as a basis to calculate the iPad price. Personally I would doubt that it will start above $600 as that is hardly "unbelievable".

you think it will be below $600 for the starter? good. im glad. the 3G model will probs end up being $1500Aus? no thanks.

It's pure speculation but it would not surprise me at all if the WiFi 16GB is bang on $599 (incl GST) and that the 64GB WiFi+3G is around $1100-1200 (incl GST). We can only wait and see. Not too long to go now...ok it's frikken forever! Hurry up Apple! Put us out of our misery! :p :D
