So what Method do you use to get your DVD's into iTunes

I am thinking there has to be a better way then using Mac the Ripper which takes 45 minutes to RIP a DVD, then using HandBrake to Encode it for use in iTunes which takes another 30-45 minutes. Then I am left with a pre encoded 6GB stored image, and 700-1.4 image for iTunes after it is Encoded.

I am also finding that Mac The Ripper has trouble reading some DVD's and I keep Getting VOB messages that either say PAD or DEL VOB? Why?

Someone mentioned they stopped using Mac the Ripper and use HB to encode the DVD right away.

What is everyone else doing I am curious because I want to go all digital, and I have 300 DVD's.

I use HB all the way.
 
My DVD back up routine is to use a PC and DVDFabDecrypter to rip the disc and Handbrake to encode. I keep both the ~6GB VIDEO_TS folder (for posterity) and create a ~1GB video file using the aTV2 preset.

I've stopped using MTR since 2.6.6 is very old and has issues on many new releases. Newer versions of MTR require sending donations to the developer and is still in beta (at least it was when I was still using MTR).

Other Mac rippers that many use are Fairplay and MacDVDRipper (I think that what it's called)

I'm kinda envious of your rip/encode times. I'm using a Centrino PC and CoreDuo Mac. Suffice it to say, my workflow durations are slightly longer.
 
I use RipIt. It costs money, but works very well.

It's a one click solution. Hit Compress and come back later.

Makes it easy to do a lot of DVDs.

I use handbrake, but on 27" iMac 2011 Core i7 3.4Ghz Quad core, the enconding time for Apple tv 2 preset only take 13~15 minutes per DVD.

Use RipIt. Rip about 10 DVD's then add all into Handbrake using the AppleTV2 preset and let HB do it's thing overnight.

The next day repeat. Using this method I churned through about 600 DVD's last fall.

I then trashed the ripped movie.

PS: Use identify to tag and add the encoded file to iTunes.
 
I use MakeMKV to rip my DVDs and Blu-Rays before doing batch transcodes with HandBrake. I like the fact that MakeMKV creates a single full resolution file per title, rather than a directory full of a bunch of VOBs. The downside is that you probably can't recreate the full menu system of the disc.
 
The Apple TV setting on Magic DVD ripper is what i've been using, it even plays on my ipods.
 
I can't figure out how to get my encoded rip from handbrake into iTunes. I ripped my first DVD today, yet cannot get it to play into iTunes. I tried dropping a copied file into iTunes, and added the file to the iTunes library via iTunes and yet nothing worked. Thanks.

Yes, I'm still using MetaX for tagging. I just like it!

Mac The Ripper doesn't work on Lion, or rather the free to get 2.6.6 doesn't. Anyone else find Handbrake transcode times have increased in Lion?
 
I use HB to rip and then Subler to meta tag. That way iTunes thinks it's a purchased movie and makes everything look right.

First, make sure you are using the Apple TV preset. Otherwise the file you create may not be compatible. Second, be sure you have VLC installed, because if you don't HB can't rip a DVD.

I have VLC installed, and the DVD has been ripped, I just can't get it to play in iTunes. What is the apple TV preset? Where do I find it, and what does that have to do with iTunes? I clicked the iPod 5g compatability, but otherwise just used the basic handbrake settings.
 
Handbreak with VLC installed for ripping.
iDentify 2 for tagging.

For problematic movies I revert and bootcamp into Windows to use AnyDVD to rip the movie. Once ripped to the hard drive I'll boot back into OSX and use the above.
 
Personally I don't care for the Mac Super Drive for ripping it's noisy, can be slow, and I've had errors when using Ripit for example. I have an older PC running XP and use the AnyDVD/CloneDVD combo from SlySoft to rip - great software!

Then I transfer the ripped files to my iMac i7 for encoding in Handbrake because it's way faster and encoding than my PC.
 
I use Handbrake with VLC installed for Direct ripping of DVD's
For Blu Ray I use an External Blu Ray Drive and MakeMKV to rip to an MKV file and then feed into HB

I've also started using Iflicks for DVD and Blu Ray encodes. I rip first using MakeMKV and then use Iflicks to conver the entire season , it does the metadata at the same time, it does a good job with everything except files needing deinterlacing.

DVDFab is my rip tool of choice too; it's on my self-built PC. Afterward, I copy the VIDEO_TS folder to a USB flash drive for conversion (usually in small batches) on my iMac via HandBrake; it saves wear and tear on the iMac's optical drive. I tag each movie "by hand".
 
I want my movies to work on ATV, ATV 2 & iPad. I am currently using the iPod/iphone HB setting and changing the biterate to 2500.

Would the ATV2 setting work with both the iPad and ATV1?

DVD Fab / handbrake
On a PC here.
 
I use Handbrake to rip when it is a movie. If it is a TV Show DVD, I will use RipIt to save to the desktop and Handbrake to create the m4V (AppleTV preset) file. For the meta data I use iFlicks.

I used MetaX in the past, but the program is been freezing on me lately. Doesn't seem to have been updated in awhile too.
 
handbrake

I start the dvd in dvd player, get the title number, use handbrake on that specific title. I use universal pre-set so it will play on all devices, the file doesn't get big. Then I use meta-x for the final step. The only problem I have is finding good artwork for the covers.
