With Apple (98% probability) moving to their own in-house mapping app, what do you think Google is going to do about the iOS market? Will Google make an iOS Maps App?

Personally, I love the current Google Maps on my iPhone / iPad. With turn-by-turn directions I would prefer to keep with Google.

I HOPE they make a gmap app...no harm in competition, although i think they will keep it just for android devices as a selling point.

For me, street view is a really useful feature for scoping out parking options for events in towns I'm not familiar with. I think if Apple rolls out its own mapping and can't offer street views, it would be a step backward in terms of usefulness.

I have no idea what Google will do, but I thought there was some plank in the App Store developer agreement about not duplicating Apple functionality. Mind you, perhaps now with SJ gone, Apple and Google will get along better... or not.

I wouldn't say it's confirmed until Apple actually announces said functionality. To me, it's a binary thing. Therefore, I probably would've said "With Apple possibly (IMO, 98% probability) moving to their own in-house mapping app..."

Wow, lol. All of this thread has been bickering over the exact words the OP used in his post even though everyone knew what he meant and even though most members here are also familiar with the rumors about Apple's possible mapping app. The argumentative smart-assery just isn't necessary. Anyway, I find it likely that Google's app will be provided in the App Store, just not as the default option given the possibility Apple launches its own app for it. But I suppose it could very well be made Android-exclusive, which could make the iOS vs Android competition a bit more interesting.

A mistake people make is that Google's products are search, email, mapping, ect.

Google has one product, advertising.

Siri, mobile, the "appification" of the web, and the "fremium" sales model are the real threats to Googles business model.

Yet the fact is while their primary revenue stream is advertising, they currently have several products, as well as the many that are currently being developed in secret, just like Apple does.

While it seems to be a difficult concept for some Apple enthusiasts to grasp, Apple actually _does_ have competition. It's an aspect of our free enterprise system. Competition is everywhere, in every industry.

At some point when Apple's fortunes begin to slide downward (and they will) suddenly competition may not be so hard for some to understand.

Would expect google and apple to allow their app through the app store.

I have no allegiance to either, I will use the best, most useful and most efficient.

Exactly this. They can serve ads through it. They make no money off Android outside of ads. They need the iPhone.

How about apple acquiring three mapping companies and the influx of leaks in recent days. We all know nothing is confirmed till apple confirms it but do we really have to pretend that these rumors never materialize into anything

Nope. Apple made it, but it uses google back end for data points.


Back to the original topic. I would be highly surprised if google didn't release google maps on the App Store in at least some version. Google wants to be everywhere just the same as there is a kindle app on the iPad. Some people have questioned it being approved due to "duplicating functionality".... well what do you have to say for the 50 (oh no, I used a number let's all go crazy and disprove it!) other mapping apps....

Apple has also acquired companies that lead to nothing, so there's no guarantee.

I'm not pretending that these rumors never materialize. I just think we need to lay off the hyperbole. Once Apple announces something, it will be confirmed. No percentages needed. Until then, it's all just a big pile of sh...peculation.

No, and that's why it's so lame.

Just look at how much Google Maps on just about every other platform has advanced since iOS came out.

What real changes has "Maps" on iOS had?

Street View in iOS 2.2?
Compass support in iOS 3?
Minor tweaks in iOS 4/5?

Things like vector based maps, offline support, turn by turn, 3D etc. could have been added.

Google doesn't care what type of phone you use - they just want the user base for advertising. I see no reason why iOS wouldn't get these features if Apple allowed them on the App Store.

Not likely if you actually consider Google's business model (already stated above). Their software and service are free because they rely on collecting and utilizing data (usually aggregated despite the worries of the tinfoil hatters) from their users. It's in their best interest to have their products in the hands of as many as possible.
