Just my opinion, but Apple could still release an M2 iMac 27”.

Note that when John T referred to the Mac Pro being the last Mac to complete the transition, he’s referring to existing products.

The fact that Apple discontinued the existing 27” iMac speaks about how much more value is in Mac Studio. Yes, the iMac had a cheaper entry price for the complete setup, but I believe Apple is shifting its focus here.

Apple still sells the "higher end" Mac mini with Intel processors. That suggests that they will get updated, perhaps with the M1 Pro or M2 Pro. That, plus the Apple Studio Display, would essentially be a replacement for the 27" Intel iMac.

I’ve been thinking back and forth on how to move on from with what way Apple have presented here as well. Doubt that any bigger iMac’s will come. I will order the Studio Display and the Mac Studio too. As more as it have landed in me, I really like it. More than iMac option even. Apple is going back to separate units again.

It will be more pricey than I had expected, but these machines will be good for a long time. Might even extend with another Studio Display later. Still calculating and thinking of my set up a few more days. See where I land. No hurry as the delivery time is not that fast here anyway. And I want to trade in that old dinosaur iMac too. My MBA serves well in this transition too.

This is the Way ??

Be patient, wait until 2023 as Kuo said.

Apple won't leave the 27" gap open. The iMac emphasizes aesthetics over performance (e.g. iMac doesn't have front USB ports even though it's common sense). Mac Studio is the other way around.

Based the performance of the M1 Max/Ultra, it's very difficult to justify keeping the Intel-based 27" iMac. If you watch the presentation, Apple would have cut the price by 2/3 to justify keeping it. Obviously, that won't happen but Apple doesn't want to sell you a brown banana either.
The gap is not about form factor. Really if it's a 27 inch M1 or a Mini Pro plus screen, both get the job done.
The gap is no prosumer innards in a desktop Mac of any kind at the moment.

Also in my opinion based on what the Studio is, a prosumer desktop totally has a place. Most of us do not need a Studio, total overkill. However many of us do want or need something more than the base M1 with more than 16GB RAM. If Apple do not want to do the 27 inch anymore, then just throw the M1 Pro into the 24 inch and people will be happy. Mind you in saying that, the new studio display does feel like a 27 inch iMac, just with the Mac removed.

I'm still on a 2013 iMac that can't even run macOS Monterey! I was really hoping for a larger-screen iMac, but I've ordered a Mac Studio + Studio Display. Just can't wait any longer!
Same here, but my iMac is a 2014. I'm still fine with the screen on it, but can't run Monterey either. The Studio Display will hopefully be my last monitor, just change out the brains when required.

there are still chances for an 30/32" imac pro
Nobody should take an intel 27" imac...better go for studio mac and display

I hop they will bring back the 27 inch for the same pro users the new matches are good don't get me wrong be they are way out of please like my selfs usage I have a 2019 iMac 16 ram 2tb ssd and I was plain to up grade it in 2025 but were to I stand now any help and how long u thing my iMac will still get the new os brfour they stop

Overall I think people need to get over this idea of wanting large displays + low performance/pricing from Apple.

It doesn't make any sense, and is not going to be seen in the future. The bigger it is, the more it costs to make, so its going to be combined with high performance components, for an all around bigger price tag.

The hilarious part is that the studio display has an A13 chip in it at $1599 ?‍?

I'm sure plenty of people would be happy to buy that as a iMac, if they just added some more storage/ram and loaded the OS on it.

currently in the desktop offering there is a gap between the M1 (mini, iMac 24) and the M1 Max/Ultra in the new Studio ... my guess is that a new 27 iMac might fill that gap, when? only apple knows.
my 2017 27 is still serving me well, I am not planning on replacing it, yet. Will wait and see what Apple brings out for the rest of the year ...

I think the m2 mini will fill that gap that everyone thinks is there. I don’t think there is a gap honestly, and I’ve been using an m1 mini in a professional capacity for months. The m2 mini with ram upgrade for $1000, studio max at $2000, and ultra at $4000. If you are doing 3D or video editing or music you need a studio max anyway. If you don’t do those things, and m2 mini (or m1) is absolutely enough. There isn’t a use case gap. And the pricing doubles as it goes up which is very Apple. In any case the studio max is super cheap relative to anything pc is offering for the price.

I'm probably going from MBP + iMac to MBP + Threadripper-based desktop. A high-end MBP makes the Mac Studio with M1 Max redundant, and the M1 Ultra model is a bit underwhelming, because it only supports the same 128 GB RAM as any consumer desktop.

I think there is a new 27" coming; but it might be higher priced (maybe half way between a 27" and a 27" Pro).

For now I think the current option for those who want a 27" at the same price point is to pick up a M1 mini and a LG UltraFine 27MD5KL-B. This should give you a setup very similar to what a 27" iMac with M1 would have given you. Total price should be very similar as well. While having two parts instead of one might be annoying for some; it does give you a lot of upgrade options in the future.

Nowhere? Why would we go away? Where? My 27" is still alive and kicking.

I really doubt that Apple will end the 27" for all time. There are people that will not go smaller to have an all-in-one, they just won't do it. And the 'opportunity' to take up more space with a processor box and a monitor will likely push some people away. Apple ending the 27" is a mistake, IMO. Using a Mac Mini and monitor instead of a larger iMac? Too soon. The iMac is elegant. The Mini/monitor is a bodge... Pass...

A lot of dreaming going on here.

When is the last time Apple axed something like the 27" iMac and then brought it back?

I wouldn't be surprised to see a future 24" with a faster M chip and more RAM, but a 27" iMac? why? the 24" is 4.5k. What would be the point of another AIO with just a marginally bigger display?

When is the last time they brought something back? How about Tuesday when they brought back a monitor. How about that time they ditched the trashcan and brought back a proper Mac Pro. Then there was that time they axed Steve Jobs and brought him back too.

Sure but you're assuming that "iMac" only refers to one iMac. Up until now, MBP only referred to two sizes, but here we are with three. In the end it doesn't really matter what Apple says now, they can easily turn around and release an iMac Pro later.

Not true about MBP only referring to two sizes until now. Starting with the first unibody MBP, there were 3 sizes: 13", 15", & 17". The Retina models got rid of the 17" and brought it down to two until the new M1 Pro MBPs. Also remember before Intel, the Powerbook G4 Aluminum line also had 3 sizes: 12", 15", 17".

That’s why it will be a 30… larger screen but dimensions like current/old 27

You just reinforced my point that iMac can refer to multiple sizes.

HODL

ride out your retro Retina iMac 27" until the next wave. Its still a great machine and cost $0 to not upgrade from it.

if these get dirt cheap from people offloading them and refurbs, for these mAc Studio's I would consider it even I havent had a desktop for 15 years
