Desktop - Windows 7. Will soon be Windows 8, when I can be bothered upgrading. Probably when I build a Haswell based rig.

Laptop - Used to be Windows 7 on my netbook, but now I use a Retina Macbook Pro. For years I've wanted a Macbook. Love it. OSX is simple, some niggles while I get adjusted to it from predominately being a Windows user.

Smartphone - iOS for me with my iPhone 4. First smartphone was an iPhone 2g and iOS feels like home to me. I don't want/need the vast customisability of Android and I find the GUI of Android not to my taste (Visual appeal is big for me) And I love how simple it is to keep my iPhone backed up and synced. Something I never worry about.

Windows Phone 8 does have a big appeal to me, but it does lack key apps and still have some missing features before I would consider moving.

Linux, I love how this can run off virtually anything. Ubuntu is quite fun. Just remember terminal commands is something I struggle with.

I am Android only on the phone, could never use an iphone as my phone but I do like IOS and Windows Phone as well. I also like Macs and Windows machines. What about you? What all devices do you have?
Same here.... I love Android and IOS. I also love my rMBP running OSX and Windows 7. Haven't installed windows 8 on the rMBP but have it on my iMac as a VM. I also have an older dell machine running Ubuntu Linux.

I get to dabble with the major platforms at work since I'm a web developer. For my work, Windows Phone 8 is dreadful. It has no live debugging tools, clearing browser caches clears saved passwords (really stupid) and I can tell you that the version of IE in it does not have feature parity with desktop IE 10, not even close. While all current default browsers (Safari, Chrome, IE) have their own set of issues, WP 8 IE10 is by far the worst. The WP7 one is abysmal. So purely for web browsing I'd stay the hell away from Windows Phone.

My own phone is a jailbroken iPhone 4. My next phone will be Android based as soon as I can find one that isn't massive, has a great display and good other specs. I'm tired of having to use hacks to get simple things on iOS, like being able to choose default apps or have a fast Javascript engine in my chosen browser.

For desktop operating systems I use Win7 at home (with a "Hackintosh" on the same system as secondary OS) and OSX at work. OSX is by far the more user friendly one but Win7 is tolerable. Win8 is a joke. A really fast joke but the user interface is laughably bad.

I won't go near Linux systems unless on a server. Still too much "oh just copy and paste this mile long command line string and it'll work" stuff.

I have been the last few years switching between iOS and android.

I had the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 4 and then switch the the Samsung gs2, the I switch back to the iPhone 4 then I switch to the samsung galaxy s 3 and not switching to the htc one.

I'm never gonna buy an iPhone again to be honest, I have found a combination of the iPad mini and an android phone far better and the best of both worlds :) once android tablet apps have caught up to iPad quality style apps then I will make the switch, other wise having the mini and the htc one will be an awesome combination.

I was actually thinking about buying a blackberry q10 as a secondary phone to take on nights out so I don't do anything to my soon to be htc one....until I realised how crazy expensive it is!

It's more expensive than the htc one , galaxy s3 and iPhone 5!! I thought it would be held cheap because of the screen size, it's basically a dying os etc and yet it's one of the most expensive phones I have seen! No wonder black berry are done for lol

So you don't mind having to pay for apps twice? Once in the Play store and once in iTunes? How about if you want to watch a movie on your iPad and later on your phone? Can't do that either unless you want to pay twice. I got tired of it.

Currently I have an iPad mini, iPhone 5, and a MacBook Air. I'm interested to see what Google brings with the next Nexus 7. Usually I have an android phone and an iPhone right now I'm deciding what android phone I want to get. I'm also looking at getting a midrange WP device like the Lumia 820.

Most of the awesome apps I buy are free on android and iOS, it's only games and actual stuff like pages and numbers that I have bought. I don't use productive stuff on my smartphone because it just isn't practical with a smart phone, so I use my iPad for exams and games, because the screen real estate.
Basically for all games and productive apps and games I use my iPad mini, because of the bigger ( but not too big) screen. Same goes for news papers etc.

For my smartphone, most apps I need are free on android, and the stuff that improves the actual operating system like swift key are like 1$ each, or free but with adds.

Make a list of all the apps you use that cost you money, then list how many times you actually use them on your iPhone itself. If you don't use them on your iPhone and solely on your iPad, then it doesn't matter. Ten look on the play store and see if it actually costs money on there.

Chances are you use most paid apps on the iPad, and only a few that are actually practical on the phone, unless your a games of course.

I don't ga,e on my phone at all, bar a few free games.

Ill give you an example just from yesterday for me. I play words with friends a lot. I bought the play pack for $15 yesterday. I can use it on my iPad mini and my iPhone 5. I also bought Jack Reacher yesterday for $15 from iTunes and I downloaded it to both my iPad and my phone to watch as well. If I still had my Android phone, I wouldn't have the pack for words or be able to watch the movie despite having spent $30. Would need to spend $60, no way. That's just 2 examples. Things like my books and magazines too, wouldn't work on Android devices. That's why I stopped mixing platforms.

Ya mixing platforms isn't really ideal especially if you prefer the apple ecosystem.

If you want to stay in the Apple eco system then I agree, it's why I stopped buying things from there and only buy from stores that support all platforms (except apps, but i don't buy many of them)

there are alternatives if you want things on other devices

Kindle for books (not sure how magazines work)
Zinio for Magazines

In the UK I can buy/rent movies from BlinkBox, available on iOS & Android and also from the web and also on smart tv's (not sure whats available where you are)

That's what I stopped doing as well, I probably spent about 200 bucks on movies and apps, then decided I am being taken for a ride putting my money in one platform in a technology area that changes drastically each year, infact I was an idiot doing so.

I use OS X (iMac) and Windows 8 (laptop) at work, Windows 7 at home (desktop) and Android on my current phone.

I have no issues with either of the OS's - they all do what they should as far as I am concerned, I have never understood the people that swear by just one system all across the board.

On the other hand I have used Macs at work since the late 90s and know Apple products very well, but have never felt the need for having any of them at home, so maybe I am a bit different than most :)

I'm using a Lumia 920 now and have been more or less since they launched. I use my iPad all the time, and I use my Nexus 7 daily. I like to keep an eye on each OS and see how they mature. Probably going to snag a Galaxy S4 once ATT gets the 32GB version.

I agree, QNX paired with the hardware of the Playbook was better than any iPad or Android tablet even up to this day. Unfortunately that meant nothing because of the lack of apps.

I have two phones I use daily - iPhone 5 for work and an HTC One personally. I also have an iPad mini and a Nexus 4.

My home computer is an iMac and I work on a Dell laptop.

All that to say I'm very comfortable on these platforms and as far as mobile devices go, I'm a bit of a device junkie. I'd like to have a WP8 and BB at some point.

On the computer end, I tolerate the Dell. If I had my way it'd be OSX all the time :)

I've owned just about every high end android phone, as well as the iPhone 4 and 5. Loved the iPhone 5's battery to be a game changer, but am now on the htc one which rivals it in terms of battery life. So far the htc one is my favorite phone I've used thus far.

I'm somewhat beginning to appreciate using various OS'es. It keeps you informed about what's going on in the world of tech and it gives me a somewhat objective view on the different systems out there - at least more so than when I'd only use a single system.

This story is probably not very interesting for a lot of people but it's nice to have a topic where I can share my experience regarding different OS's.

I've used Windows almost my entire life - didn't really have a choice since I was too young to buy my own computer and it worked alright. However, I remember working with a 24" iMac in 2009 and I immediately fell in love.

It was in 2010, at age 14, that I got my first Mac, a 1999 PowerMac G4 running Mac OS 9.2.2. It wasn't really useable because of the older software but as soon as I upgraded the RAM and figured out how to install OS X (took me a year...) it replaced my main computer, a Windows 7 PC. It sure as hell wasn't faster than the Windows PC but I liked the operating system (OS X 10.4) much more than Windows 7. Then again, I didn't have any problems with Windows but Mac OS just worked for me.

After a year or so, just before my 15th birthday, I was able to buy a Mac by myself; a 2005 iMac G5 (iSight) which also ran OS X 10.4. Of course this was a huge improvement, and by maxing out the RAM and upgrading to OS X 10.5 I finally had an 'up to date' Mac that was a worthy replacement for my main computer.

That didn't last long, though; after a month or three I had saved up enough money to buy an even more up to date Mac, a 2008 iMac. This was most definitely an upgrade to my previous iMac; it had an Intel processor thus was very powerful and it could run the latest and greatest OS. It came with OS X 10.6 but I never gave myself the opportunity to use it; I installed OS X 10.7 right away. I remember it being a huge difference compared to 10.5 since it was much more refined and this time I really had the idea I had a 'new' Mac.

It was around this time I also got my first smartphone, a HTC Desire S. It ran Android and I was very content with it. It didn't take long before I had rooted it and got familiar to the world of custom ROMs to make optimal use out of it.

Half a year went by and then, in april 2012, I had saved enough money to buy a brand new Mac. However, since I was going to university the next year I had to bring my computer with me as well so I decided to go for a portable computer. I bought a MacBook Pro just before the 2012 refresh (which I knew were coming but I didn't like the idea of not being able to upgrade my computer as I've done that with every Mac I owned thus far).
It came with OS X 10.7 but I upgraded as soon as 10.8 was available.

A few months after the 10.8 release I decided I wanted a new phone. Despite being such a Mac fanatic, I didn't want an iPhone because my Desire S had a 3.7" display and I found even that to be a bit too small for me. I wanted something bigger, so I bought a Samsung Galaxy Note. It ran Android 2.3, like the Desire S, when it originally came out, but I was already used to using Android 4.1 on the HTC so it didn't take long before having rooted my phone and installing Android 4.1 yet again. As soon as 4.2 came out, that ROM was installed on my phone.

Up until now, I hadn't really thought about getting an iOS device. However, a month ago I purchased my very first one; an iPad. I have to say that I quite like iOS in terms of snappiness and UI but I don't think an iPhone will be my first choice since I really like Android as well and I like to experience multiple OS'es to know what's going on in the world of tech.

TL;DR
1995-2010
Windows PC's (Windows 95 - Windows XP - Windows Vista - Windows 7 - Ubuntu 10.10 - Ubuntu 11.04)

2010-2011
PowerMac G4 (Mac OS 9.2.2 - OS X 10.4)

2011-2012
iMac G5 (OS X 10.4 - OS X 10.5)
iMac (OS X 10.6 - OS X 10.7 - Windows 7)
HTC Desire S (Android 2.3 - Android 4.0 - Android 4.1)
MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7 - OS X 10.8 - Windows 7)
Samsung Galaxy Note (Android 2.3 - Android 4.0 - Android 4.1)

2012-2013
MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8 - Windows 7 - Windows 8)
Samsung Galaxy Note (Android 4.1 - Android 4.2)
iPad (iOS 6)

These devices are still in my posession and (actively) used.

main system is Mac OS X (iMac, MBA), recently a Win 8 tablet joined the club replacing the virtual Windows I run under Fusion.
My home server is self-brewed running ESXi as hypervisor with several FreeBSD / Linux VM.

Mobile strictly iOS-based until now (the Win 8 tablet is an exception)

I do, right now I have:

iPhone 4S
Nexus 7
iPad 3
Macbook Pro
Windows 7+Ubuntu Linux desktop
Windows 8 laptop
And until recently I owned a Samsung Focus Flash Windows Phone 7.

I like to try all technology, and use the best one for my needs. Plus it allows me to criticize all platforms based on my personal experience using them.
