I have the 11 Pro and I like the size. The only thing that can be annoying is the keyboard when I type. I guess my fingers are bigger than I thought because I’m always making typing errors. I’ve learned that using the swipe method helps so I’ve been getting used to that. Not sure I could ever go smaller that 5.8.

He should get the new SE then, that has eSIM.
I don't know how easy it is to transfer eSIM to eSIM so I'm avoiding making such changes at the moment until the lockdown is done and we can visit an AT&T store.

Besides, he could never get TouchID working (yep, manual PIN entry on the iPhone 7 every single time) so I'm thinking iPhone 12 5.4" might be better for him. Funnily enough, he said FaceID worked with his mask on.

(I also had the 11 Pro briefly). It is still nowhere near as good as my sony rx100vi, which I almost always have with me anyway. And my interest free monthly payments will drop by two thirds. I feel like I too easily fell into thinking that buying a $1000+ phone every year or two was reasonable.
I bought the 11 Pro Max recently...thinking I might use it instead of getting an iPad....it's just too big and too expensive. I'd prefer to have a compact device that I can run out with and use an iPad for other things around the house. Plus I can get an iPad and the SE 2 and still spend less than the 256GB 11 Pro Max. I'm returning it in a few days. Will be using my SE 1st Gen until the SE 2 arrives.

Not sure why anyone with an iPhone X or later would be tempted in the least. I think all of those people who bought it wanting the latest Apple gadget will be pretty disappointed once they see the huge bezels and much smaller screen. Sure, there are some people who want the smaller size. But for most of the people who have been living with 5.8” and up phones, the smaller SE is going to be a shock.

Had a 7, gave it away to a friend a while back. I like the size. I'll be putting iOS 14 on when the betas are released. the SE will be a 2nd device with the potential to be my main device. Upgraded processor in that smaller package is a big factor. The price is sweet. Seems like no downside to it to me. Got me a red with black leather case.

I passed from the 8 to the XR, and went back a month later due to it´s size and weight.
Then I went from the 8 to the 11, and go back two months later.
Then I went from the 8 to the 11 Pro, convincing myself that is was just a little taller, thicker and heavier.

And now, 6 month later I´m thinking on going "back" to the SE2.

The fact that you need to reach the top of the screen/phone on the 11P makes a big difference on its use.
The weight and thickness is noticeable (of course the battery life is better thanks to this).

Everytime I hold the 8 I feel what someone here says: "I'm going back home after a long trip!!!"
It feels good, it feels great, so this SE is maybe my way to go.

I´ll miss the night mode and the portrait mode open to everything and not just humans. Also the battery.

But for half the price, I can live with it until we can see a full screen design with a smaller size and weight of the 11Pro.

I know Apple is premium materials, but if you hold the Samsung S10E for example, you can see how a big screen can fit on a better weight.

I've been saying this for a while too, yup I get "premium materals, yada, yada, yada" but man my Pro Max is HEAVY compared to other offerings with a comparable sized screen. Wish it was lighter, for me it's not the size but the weight I can't stand. I'm thinking about the new SE myself, as I use my OG SE when I'm out doing activities since it's so light to carry.

Problem is tech pundits will lambast it for using non-premium chassis.

Honestly, only iPhone I used caseless was the plastic iPhone 5C. That one actually felt pretty good in hand and was surprisingly easy to grip securely despite the glossy finish.

Now for me, as I get older and my eyes aren't what they used to be, I love the larger screen phones, but when you pick up a Samsung or a Pixel of the same size, what a difference in weight. I'd gladly sacrifice the "premium feel" for something lighter. But that's just me...

Hello

I have an interest in this SE as my old one is limited on space.

Can someone tell me if the case is a gloss or matte finish? If it is the gloss finish like the 11, then I do not know if I would like it at all as the 11 looks cheap with the gloss finish

Can’t have everything at this price point. Lighter is going to be a nice feature imo. Besides who gives a flyin’ frick what pundits think. It’ll be slick with the back glass so going to need a case anyway. I’m not
hoping to make a statement with it, just want a good , small, solid phone I can get great service from for 2 or 3 years.

It is said to have a glossy glass backside. If it was a matte finish I’d not use a case.

OP,

This thread reminds me of your recent saga with the iPad mini 5. Give that some thought.

Truth, and you know what? I just swapped my granddaughter my Air 3 for her mini 5. I never could justify the mini as a 4th device, but, after using a mini 4 for a while (one of my grandkids' old ones), I decided I really do love the smaller size for almost everything, and when I need something bigger to do stuff on, I have my iMac.

And now that I have the mini for reading and stuff in bed, I don't need a phone big enough to do that.

Also, I'm sure boredom has something to do with wanting change. I need to get out of this house. ;-p

I think you are more interested in having the “newest iPhone” that’s released. It’s a downgrade from your 11. Lol.

Nah. Not in this case. I mean yeah I'm typically like that because the new phones usually have something better to offer, but in this case, the size is really appealing. I had contemplated going back to an 8 just because sometimes I really miss a small, light, easy to handle phone, but I didn't because I would always use it in bed for reading and stuff (my iPads were just too big for me to do that). Now I use the mini for all that, so my phone could be smaller and more portable.

It's gloss, though the thing that makes the 11 (and the se2) look 'cheap' (cheap really only when compared to the 11 pro) is more the aluminium chassis and the bigger bezels along the screen, the X and Xs with that same glossy back did (and do) look premium.
