Darn close to being an OS that'll ship on DVD...

yeah, well they already ship the system on DVD with the computers that have at least combo drives (= every computer). So my guess is that off the shelve the system will still be on CD. No reason making two different production lines for that purpose.

....and they will ship it on dvd with future computers just like they do now.

or follow the iLife route and have a CD and DVD version in the same box. For $130 a pop they can afford 4 disks in the box. ;P

Also I'm sure there is a network install that you can use for school computers.

I hope it doesn't run on G3 iMacs. I need an excuse to get rid of my wife's iMac and get a new G5.

Somehow, I feel compelled to help you. You can add the need to give your old iMac to me, as further reason to get a new G5 ;)

I swear, I called Apple Tech Support, and it supports the iMac, but only the floral print one. All the others won't run it. I did everything I could!!! :p

They should totally ship CD/DVD in the same box. The cost of the media must be <$5....

So my iBook G4 came with Panther on DVD? I never bothered to really look at it carefully beyond noting that there was a disk. ;)

I'm sure it'll be fine on everything that supports OSX because OSX is OSX, regardless of little modifications.. So I'm assuming there will be cd versions of the installer even though there may also be dvd versions and dvd system installer disks for the various computers..

What about the Core Graphics thingy - will that work on a G4? I'm guessing that it's just an updated Quartz extreme type thing.

yes, it is quarz extreme addon. most likely they will keep the qe name and not change it in any way. it is not CPU dependant at all, but i think it will not work on G3 because those supported graphics cards cannot (?) be installed on one. the G4 should be very well in the game, as this current powerbook will also support the new tech.

this is exactly the same than microsoft has to do with its longhorn. not all computers sold at the longhorn release time will have enough graphics power, unless the release is further delayed past 2007 ;)

strange thing, though, that nobody in the wintel crowd is complaining about strict hardware requirements set by microsoft. maybe because the release date is so embarassingly far away? but we mac users feel the need to whine about the fact that not all computers sold this year would be able to take full advantage of the technology that will be released next year. come on?

they will ship the operating system retail boxes on cd media only, because they think about regular joe and don't want to cause any confusion. they will likely change the retail box to dvd media only after all apple computers have had dvd-rom for some time...

currently they include dvd media for all computers with builtin dvd-rom capability. that's good enough.

First of all, i think that Apple will only continue to support the Macs which can run Panther. This is Apple's way of 1) cutting back on the support for all the various Macs they make; and 2) thus, this is their way of phasing some computers out of their OS support.

Second, i think that they should have Tiger on DVD and CD. My G4 will run Tiger, but my beefed up G3 will not unless finding a work around installer. Besides i don't think that Apple will not support those people that don't have a specific ROM drive. I mean didn't Apple have a DVD and CD-ROM disc versions for iLife?

Correction--

System Requirements
Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
-600MHz G3 or faster required for GarageBand; G4 or G5 required for GarageBand software instruments

256MB of physical RAM
Display with at least 1024-by-768-pixel resolution
Mac OS X v10.2.6 or later (v10.2.8 or later recommended)
QuickTime 6.4 or later (QuickTime 6.5 included)
4.3GB of disk space required to install GarageBand, iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD; or 250MB to install iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie only
Important Notes:
DVD drive required to install GarageBand and iDVD
iDVD requires a 733MHz PowerPC G4 or faster.
Burning DVDs using iDVD requires an Apple SuperDrive.
Burning iPhoto archives to CD or DVD requires Mac OS X v10.2.8 or later.

I think that this must allow users of computers with out the dvd-rom to install certian software packages, iDVD, and GarageBand are the only programs which require a DVD drive. For those of you that have iLife, did they ship a DVD disk and CDROM too?
