But here's the kicker. As soon as its released, there will be rumors of something even better coming down the line (3D? Even higher resolution screens? The always-rumored touchscreen iMac? 1 TB SSDs? I could go on and on and on here.)

The neat thing about "retina" display levels is that even higher resolution screens are meaningless. After "retina" is reached, what you need to wait for is a higher resolution eyeball. Sadly, my eyes are going in the opposite direction.

You missed the point of my comment. All I was saying was that there is ALWAYS going to be something in the rumor pipeline that will blow whatever the current model is out of the water (whether we are talking displays or CPUs or model redesigns). I suppose if someone has been dreaming of a retina display on their iMac since the iPhone 4 came out, then it might be worth waiting for. But for those who are just always wanting the absolute best computer, relying on rumors will never allow you to make a purchase.

I didn't miss the point. I was making a different point, which is that after "retina" display there is no possibility of improvement. Think about that for minute. This is the only complex technological device that has a finish point for human development that I can think of. And we are pretty close to reaching it. Obviously there are tweaks and some improvements but after retina, nothing that is really major (unless we talk about 3D). No display can get sharper than my iPhone in a way that is meaningful for a human. So the iPhone display is basically in some ways as good as it will ever be. Think about all the advancements that we have seen in just the last 20 years. With this display, we are done. Sure you can support a few more colors, but I think displays are near or at the point where they support every color that the human eye can detect as well. The display could be less reflective or easier to see in sunlight. That would be nice, but what else can they do beyond that? Hmm, slightly thinner glass? I guess that would be noticeable, but still just a tweak.

It is just interesting that we are getting close to the point where you might buy a 27" retina display and that would be as good as it could get. Period. I think we are basically there as far as the iPhone screen. That kind of boggles my mind a bit.

But maybe I'm just lacking imagination and it can actually be improved. After all, we certainly can use more than 640k.

Nah, you'd still need higher res for people who like to push their faces right against the screen, they can still see teh pixzalz :D

at NAB there were some 57" displays with 3840x2160, they called them 4k, and were around $70,000  so I don't think we will see that in a 27" iMac anytime soon, but hey you never know.

The current 27 inch display at 2550 X 1440 is incredible. I could just imagine the eye searing quality of a 4k display. Good luck running any games in 4k resolution at a decent framerate, it will take a while before gpu's are there. I don't think we will see it this time around, but hey you never know. It could be sweet if they shock us.
