So, your macbook and ipad are next to each other and you want to browse the net....

Going for the iPad. No question whatsoever. It's just a better (and more magical) browsing experience.
Right now, my MBP is for XCode and syncing the iPad.

If it's a quick browse...iPad.
If it's a long period of browsing...MacBook.
It's all about practicality and time. I look at the iPad more as an accessory to the MacBook. It's there for other media. The iPhone used to take the place of it but it really is too small.

When I first got my iPhone it was used almost nonstop. I was downloading app after app for about three months. Then it got old. In the past nine months I've downloaded zero new apps and only use four apps.
Once people get used to the hype and newness of the device it will pass.

Great now I'm more curious! I'm still trying to decide between wifi and 3G then whether I can do anything productive on it. So far I see it as a nice extension to my phone, a worthy purchase in it of itself, but I'm trying to think long-term here.
First day I had my iPad, I was working on my MacBook Pro while watching a tv show on the ABC app on my iPad, as it was propped up in the Apple Case. I was also texting on my iPhone. I must admit it did seem a bit silly having all three right there together in use, but I like having options. : )
Last night I noticed how vibrant the images are when you use the iPad in a darkened room. My MacBook Pro is a couple of years old and it has the matt finish screen. I think the images look nicer on the iPad. Plus it just feels zippier.
So I think I will have to say iPad too, though time will tell. It is the new toy at the moment... : )

It's all over the boards. You need to have a jailbroken iPhone, and then download MyWi. It's $10 dollars. It turns your iPhone into a WiFi hotspot. Works amazingly well I have to say.
Wouldn't this be a better question asked in say, another month?
Of course few people are reaching for their laptops. The iPad is tres cool, if it's a novelty it will take some time to wear off.
After playing with a coworker's yesterday I must say I want one, but I have a history of buying gadgets see use for a week or two then are shelved. It would be great to live with one for a week... see how it fares when kicking back on the couch, in bed, at the coffee shop, etc. My main concern is ergonomics, specifically weight and ways you have to hold it that may put undue stress on your neck. So I'll be holding off to see how questions like this are answered again in a few weeks

So far the majority of my web-browsing has been via the iPad since I received it. At first I was tending to switch to the Macbook if I actually wanted to post messages; now it's only happening (Macbook) when I need to do something with a lot of cross-app copy and paste. For example, I wanted to reply to an eBay (web-based) private message with a long section from an email in my inbox, and it wasn't working intuitively enough, so I grabbed the laptop.
I'm pretty confident this answer won't change, but I do a lot of websurfing while 'lounging'. The iPad is vastly superior for this. If I was only using a normal desk, I wouldn't see the point.

I've relegated my macbook to the spare room now, and have been using my iPad exclusively for websurfing. The only things I will continue to use my macbook for is syncing my ipad, printing, and maybe downloading things from torrents. Otherwise the iPad satisifies almost all my computing needs.
