SoCal iPhone Users, 3G Network Snafu

As of about 9:30am this morning the 3G Network in SoCal has become totally flakey. I stopped by the AT&T store this morning because I thought something was wrong with my phone; it wasn't, they admitted to wide spread 3G failures.

This means that not only does the data not work, but it also causes most calls to drop or fail (90%+ failure rate on attempted calls)

If you turn OFF the 3G, it will continue to work.
Settings -> Network -> 3G Off
Then turn the phone off and back on.

They suspect that it may be this way for a few days.

Ok, could be the Orange County area, I know that Irvine, Mission Viejo, Lake Forest, and RSM are effected. On my way to the store I tried continuously to call and would only get 1 out of 20 to 30 to go through.

I said SoCal because that is what the guy at the store told me. But he was very clear that he didn't know much about the details. But his solution of switching to Edge did work, even for making calls.

mines been messed up for the last couple of weeks. Especially since 3.1. So it could be that but the 3g has been sooo messed up in the lake forest and santa ana area. I've havent had any problems with att since I got the iphone 3gs and been pretty happy with it. But after this last month. Kinda annoyed cause im paying a premium for data.
Guess lots of oc problems right now.

I was at the Irvine Store, Irvine Blvd and Sand Canyon and it was failing for me there. But while driving down there, just before the Portola Plaza on the 133 I could make any call I wanted. It really seems area dependent.

Iim el toro in lake forest and havent got any text but in Sa off 55 its been on and off.. I called service and they were confused as always but pretty cool. He did some reset of my phone to see if it will register better or something and I got all my texts back.
I dont think MMs can really affect the system like this. I dont ever send picture messeges and only gotten a couple since the release.
I think the main problem is 3.1 and a combination of just having crappy service. I've been like the only customer in the Oc to be actually happy with ATT. and have had excellent coverage.
Oh well.

Most people I know have had little to no problems, really, I don't see such a big deal. I would like to see the iPhone on other carriers just for competition but otherwise, things haven't been bad.

i haven't had any issues on my phone all day (data)... and i've been on it a lot cuz we've had issue with out network at work!

At our office in Irvine, everyone was getting no reception at all. It may not have been a widespread problem, but it must have effected a good number of people here in OC.

What premium do you pay for data? We all pay $30 for the iphone 3G(S) data, and many people live in edge areas. You think if you had a 3G(S) iphone in a rural area with edge/gprs only that att would charge you less? Nope.

Uh no I'm paying for 3g service if it keeps going to edge service then why Am i paying a higher cost if I can't get what I'm paying for.does that make more sense to you now

I've had no issues here in the valley. I have 3g 99% of the time. I have more of a problem with calls being dropped than with my data.

Your paying for data not 3G, living in a area with 3G is a added benefit. But you would pay $30 no matter where you live be it a 3G area or Edge, maybe you just can't understand what I'm saying. AT&T charges $30 for the iPhone 3G(S) data, the doesn't mean you are guaranteed 3G speeds just that you have data access for your iPhone. Try this, call AT&T and tell them your moving to a area that has no 3G coverage and see if they will reduce your data plan cost. Guess what, they won't. It costs the same no matter what speeds you get, show me where in the details it says your paying for 3G service?

Data Plan for iPhone includes unlimited data in the U.S. Access rich HTML email and desktop-level web browsing, as well as Visual Voicemail to listen to voicemail messages in any order you choose.

That I can give you a AMEN to, I think its BS they advertise 3G in your area but it doesn't work half the time, I would be pissed if that was my case. But just be happy you get it at all, cuz I don't! lol.
