You could try booting into safe boot to see if that at least lets the computer start up.
You could also boot into recovery and select the "Restore from Time Machine" option, then select your internal disk as the source. If there's a snapshot from before the 11.1 update, select that and it should revert the computer.
Alternatively, I'd try starting from Internet Recovery and reinstalling what should be 11.0.1, if I had a good backup of my data. Reinstalling shouldn't affect your files but I haven't tested this with Big Sur so I don't know if it'd be successful.

Huh, it DID turn out to be the issue where I was on a "non-release" build, which is bizarre, because I definitely ran the installer the day Big Sur came out, but we all know the server hell that went on, so who knows what happened. Sure enough, running it again put me on 20B50 and the 11.1 update prompt is gone.

Does anyone know how to remove Feedback Assistant? Or does it just stay there unless you've got a totally clean macOS install?

Exact same issue here on 2019 MBP. Booting keeps restarting infinitely, booting into safe mode doesn’t seem to work, reinstall not possible due to “volume cannot be downgraded” issue.

Long story short, I’m unable to boot my MBP. Any more ideas what to try, please?

this is the first real issue I’ve had on my Mac in 8.5 years so I’m not well versed.

The various errors usually appear when trying to start internet recovery and the computer isn't connected to wifi or can't successfully reach Apple's servers, so if you have a different wifi network nearby, try that. Also be sure you temporarily disable any network-level adblocking if you have any.
Once you get to internet recovery you can add an APFS volume without erasing the disk and do a new installation onto that volume, which will leave your current installation as is. That'd give you the opportunity to back up your current data before reformatting.

I finally got it up and booting!
  1. Reset SMC
  2. Reset PRAM / NVRAM
  3. Boot into recovery mode
  4. Mount disk in disk utility (probably doesn't make a difference at all)
  5. At the top on the apple logo, click startup
  6. Choose your disk to startup with and click restart
  7. My laptop popped up the kernel panic error msg and told me to press a key to continue
  8. It'll boot like normal
  9. Login
My machine didn't reset this time during the login, but it did tell me that it disable some kernel extensions, namely (ntfs for mac, an intel kernel extension, and some other one)

I'll try to see if I can force this scenario again, in order to give more detailed steps. This was me just trying a bunch of stuff

I do have NTFS for Mac as well. Maybe that’s the culprit?

Could be! In recovery OS, mount your data drive (mine is called 10.14 - Data) run
Bash:
kextunload /Volumes/10.14\ -\ Data/Library/Extensions/ufsd_NTFS.kext
and see if that works for you. You might have to throw a sudo at the front of the command

worked for me too, thank you!

seems like the SMC reset + selecting the startup disk are the crucial steps, those I didn’t do previously.

I believe the beta program just puts an alias/shortcut in the Applications Utilities folder, so just delete that. The Feedback Assistant app itself will still exist in some system folder (/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/Feedback Assistant.app), even on a totally clean macOS install.

Mine is booting and everything, but I would like to install the final version of Big Sur 11.0.1 again but it doesn’t work. I have tried to unenroll or reenroll again or delete the Update Catalog. Nothing helps

Perhaps the update was already downloaded. The /Library/Updates directory should not have any large files. Maybe restarting the system solves the problem.

I saw elsewhere that people suggested re-enrolling and then un-enrolling to clear it properly.

THANK YOU so much for this.. I started having this issue (being prompted to upgrade to Ventura Beta) after installing macOS 12.6.1 RC2 and it continued after installing RC3, and I've had no profile installed at all. I've just been updating straight from the downloadable installer from Apple. Note, I copied/pasted both commands noted earlier at the same time and it enrolled and then unenrolled and there was still no change. Running the code you posted ultimately fixed my issues. Thanks again!


*****Correction- Still showing me an update is available when I don't have the Dev Profile installed.
