I refuse to jump on the IPads bandwagon and spend almost £800. I replaced my iPad Pro with a 2018 iPad which still supports pencil. That way I can upgrade my iPad next year in March 2019 or Wait until 2020 and atleast the budget model doesn’t cost more than a Mac!

Sold my pro in favour of cheaper 2018 iPad

Makes sense depending on your use of the iPad and your budget. If you are surfing the net and watching videos primarily and just want a bigger device to do it on while laying in bed or on the couch, it makes sense to get the 2018 iPad unless you have the discretionary income for the iPad Pro.
I understand not wanting to pay that much money for a new iPad but selling your old iPad to replace it with an inferior one just so you can pretend you upgrade every year? Why not just wait until a new budget iPad that's better than your old iPad Pro comes out to upgrade?
I did practically the same thing last year. 10.5 returned in favor of 5th generation. The regular iPad is wonderful and vastly underestimated, at least on this forum (in my opinion).
I've just honestly never moved off my 9.7" LTE iPad Pro.

I’m with you here. I have the same and love it - the size, pencil and keyboard. Everything still works great. No reason to upgrade for me.
The regular iPad is a great device and easily the best tablet (Pro aside). It's just that this is an enthusiast forum so of course you have people favoring the Pro over the regular one. I mean people here even favor the 12.9" over the 11" even though chances are that the 11" is the most popular Pro model (and of course the regular iPad is the most popular of all).
I’d say to many people worry about tech specs than need to and most Pro purchasers have no real need of all the power, they just want a bigger screen. The 9.7 iPad is fine for most. But there are cases that do require the extra screen real estate and horsepower of the pro model.
True. Except the enthusiasm has become a frenzy. Some keep talking about the inferiority of the regular and superiority of the Pro. But except for the larger screen size and pencil (which I don’t need or want), I just don’t see it. The resolution and performance of the regular is excellent and in my opinion as good of an experience as the Pro. Like you, the freedom to upgrade more often without draining the bank is invaluable.

I have a 10.5 and love it but have been wanting the larger screen for photo editing, etc. I was disappointed at the prices of the new ipads. They are just beyond my reach right now. Having to buy new peripherals is what did me in on the price.
So yesterday I picked up a 12.9” 256gb at BJs for $800. I really liked it as far as editing goes. Unfortunately, my dog is at the vet right now. If she needs surgery, I will be returning it. I can always get an iPad but I am trying to be hopeful that surgery will not be needed. And won’t have to return it.

My favorite feature of the pros is the ASK. I like the feel of the keyboard (in both 9.7 and 10.5) and the convenience (it’s there, nothing extra to drag out and nothing to charge). I’m planning to pick up an 11 256 LTE first thing tomorrow morning (if it’s in stock) because I’m tired of dealing with my Verizon hotspot for my main traveling media consumption device. We don’t get great Verizon signal at our camp sometimes. The hotspot and a limited data plan will work fine for devices that are just receiving pics from our cellular trail cameras but I’m hoping that an AT&T LTE device will work as my “stay connected while in the middle of nowhere” area.
I also think that I will use the pencil a lot more with it attached to the iPad. I’m trying to train myself to use the pen (Surface Go) or pencil as much as possible.

Yes I only use my iPad for going online so I found little benefit of the the Pro. I find cases easier to come by for the 9.7” model too.

I researched used iPad Pros for a good while before forgoing the Pro line for a new 2018 iPad. Imported it from Hongkong for £60 less than retail.
Literally my only regret is the speaker. Watching YouTube videos, with sound firing out of the bottom of the iPad compared to my iPhone X, is poor. Can only imagine the Pro’s speakers are much better.

Given what a normal/casual user and likely normal iPad buyer is doing with their device, the speakers on there are the one sole (and big) disappointment.
Sounds kinda like they have the older 9.7" Pro, in which case the 2018 model is a speed upgrade because the A10 is faster than the A9X. But the 9.7" has a better 12MP camera, a much better 5MP FT camera, 4K recording, four speakers, and true tone display. So if they only care about speed but don't want to spend a lot, then I guess it makes sense. Otherwise it doesn't. Oh and I think most reviews showed that the 2018 iPad has better battery life, and I know it has a bigger battery, but I don't know the exact times. So speed/battery vs. better cameras, speakers and display calibration.
I guess if you’ve never had a Pro to compare it to, you’re no worse off really.
Just sort of sucks Apple didn't find a way to do better on the speakers on the iPad and really deliver on all the key things that would make that customer super super happy - great speaker sound being really high on that list.

Nice rich sounding stereo speakers, 3GB RAM and a laminated screen would make this iPad a no brainer. They could even charge an extra $75 for it but you know what, Apple are tight and they don't give you what you want unless you drop $$$$$$$. The Huawei M5 has a laminated 2K IPS screen, great sounding stereo speakers, 4GB of RAM and awesome battery life. If all you do is web browse or watch video then it's the overwhelming smart choice for only $300.
If next year they release the base model with an A11, 3gb of ram, quad speakers and a laminated display, I will definitely heavily consider that.
But honestly my 6th gen is a very fast and capable device, even the display looks amazing without being laminated. The 3gb of ram t help future proof and the louder speakers would be a huge bonus
