Hello everyone,

So as you all already know, Disk Utility changed quite a bit with El Capitan - this is old news. Similar to what Apple did with iWork (and some other applications), they stripped down Disk Utility and ended up removing key features.

Apparently, you can only - in SOME cases - make disk images; you can't copy disks to each other; and it also (apparently) lacks a feature for RAID. Some even say that current features are buggy.

Luckily, a guide was made on how to trick the previous version of Disk Utility into thinking that it isn't running on El Capitan; this way, you can enjoy the old DU - before Apple decided to... well... r*pe it. (Here's the site:
https://justus.berlin/2015/10/restore-old-disk-utility-in-os-x-el-capitan/).

You can follow this guide yourself, OR you can download the already-modified application here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/3gt7v84slw3d36z/Disk_Utility_(Old).app.zip

Note that I am not responsible for any and all issues that this modified application could have, nor am I responsible for any damage to your system/software as a result. Credit goes to the person who made the guide and my brother for providing me the Disk Utility.app - already modified.

If you do not trust this application I have for download, go and check the SHA256 hash of the already-modified version and make sure it matches with the one in the article. I have ZERO intentions of producing or distributing malware, and I personally think that anybody who DOES produce malware/viruses, with intentions of harming a person's computer or stealing their personal information, should be given the death penalty.

If you happen to encounter any issues with this version of DU, on El Cap, please report them on this thread. It should not have a reason to be unstable, but one can never know.

Anyway, enjoy the previous version of Disk Utility again! This is a great way to flip-off Apple for turning your utilities into ultra-consumer-ish garbage. On a different note, if you think that Disk Utility became screwed up, look what happened with Pages. The list of things they added to Pages is about a few lines long... and the list of features they removed from their existing version of Pages is probably about a Page long.

-PowerMac G4 MDD (THIS POST IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY VGVarun.com - please show your appreciation and give them a visit!) Also, credit to my brother, sudo1996, for applying what he learned from the guide in order to create the application that has been put up for download. He has also figured out how to activate it on its given machine; however, I see that others have used their own methods - they vary.

EDIT: Apparently, while the pre-prepared application DID end up working with the machine on which it was created, It's having issues on others' machines. If you download it, it will likely not open or just endlessly bounce on the dock. Not currently sure about a fix - but, for now, follow the guide from that website I linked you guys to.

-Excuse my ranter banter-

What app won't open? You mean disk util (old) after you did everything exactly as in the instructions linked, or the linked done copy he posted? In any case maybe try running it through permissions fix app>

Something about the linked application is messed up. It doesn't launch if I open the .app, only if I go into the Contents/MacOS and run the Unix executable. The executable does match the article's checksum.

I see this in the console. Probably launchd doesn't want you tampering with Disk Utility, and IDK how to get around it:
11/16/15 4:40:34.676 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.apple.coreservices.uiagent[69662]) Binary is improperly signed.

What you can do instead is, if you still have a copy of the old Disk Utility, copy the binary in Contents/MacOS from the downloaded one into it so it'll launch in El Capitan.

I kept a bootable Mavericks partition. Can I simply boot into Mavericks and run the old Disk Utility without risking conflicts when I reboot into El Cap?

I don't recommend trying, it might work but there are changes between Mavericks and El Capitan that the Mavericks Disk Utility isn't aware of and using it will likely cause problems.

I seriously doubt it would cause any problems. Heck, I've used Linux utilities to manage my Mac drives before, and it's been fine.

What the Could (Should) have done is give the user a choice. The dumbed down done for the novice and the old one for the experienced user.

I didn't vote because none of the three choices is apropos to me!

The app worked fine here after running it through permissionsfix app.

Yes I know about repairing permissions. But I am unaware of a permissions fix app that will allow fixing permissions for a single app.

This. Like a terminal command that turns on a debug menu which hides/reveals all the hidden functions.
Me, I just installed a virtual OSX alongside my virtual Windows. Works great.

Yes there is. Strangely it looks like a space disappeared though.

find . -iname "Disk Utility (Old).app" -print0 | xargs -0 xattr -d com.apple.quarantine

The only strange thing is that I keep on getting the message "you are opening this application for the first time".

Edit: pop-up fix

Code:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -all local,system,user

I think the Yosemite version was perfect. Don't understand why Apple changed it.

Not just Yosemite, but pretty much every version prior had a good Disk Utility...

Of course, when I really needed to repair my main volume, El Cap's utility didn't work for me at all. I had to boot from my old Moutain Lion HDD and use its Disk Utility to repair my drive.
