That's only a rumor that only the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S support Airplay Mirroring.

Not a fact yet until someone tries and fails.

Well, Apple's site only mentions Airplay Mirroring working with those two devices. It would be very unusual for them to specify models if it in fact works with any recent iPhone/iPad - Apple's not a company that tends to 'undersell' it's features.

True, but Apple is a company that wants you to buy their new, aspirational hardware to go with their new software.

Not mentioning older iDevices could have been their way of building excitement for the new hotness, being a hardware company first and foremost.

I wouldn't put it past Apple to artificially limit Airplay Mirroring to just the new models (4S and iPad2) to bolster sales; but I can't imagine they'd support the iPhone 4 and then keep it a secret.

There is no way of knowing whether it comes out this christmas, or maybe even next christmas, or if they release an ATV3 at all.

Although it's quite funny to see someone who upgrades a really expensive phone after only having had it for about a year to be all greedy about the ATV2 ;)

I don't have an iPhone 4 I have the iPod touch 4. But I want to buy an iPhone and because of the fact that the iPhone 4s is the newest iPhone I want to sell my iPod touch 4 and buy an iPhone 4s.

I say buy it! You want it, you seem to have the money, you don't know how long you have to wait for an eventual ATV3... Just do yourself a favor and get it :)
So you say that no one really knows when it will come out and it can even happen 2 years from now?

and clarkie604 thank you for the information!

Don't forget what happened in Norway with the iPad - there is nothing that says they couldn't do the same thing with the ATV...

Come on man -- pure speculation. It could come this week. It could come next year or in two years. Nobody that posts on here knows.

True, but i stand by No ATV3 until fall 2012

I was waiting to buy another AppleTV for our bedroom to see if there would be any AppleTV love when the new iPhone came out. Since there wasn't, I'm going for an $85 refurbished box. If AppleTV 3 comes out before Christmas, I'll probably buy it and move one of the 2's to the gaming TV in the basement. No big deal.

Agreed, at $99, unless you only have 1 modern TV (HDMI) then having more then one is a good thing.

The ATV does such a great Job at streaming iTunes content and i would add the best (most polished UI) Netflix streamer as well. That for someone with even a little iTunes content can not go wrong buying one.

Just jailbreak it, install XBMC and you can access any video file format over the LAN or WLAN, without the need of a computer.
In my case, I have several drives being shared by my Airport Extreme router. It works great!

Ok I think I will buy it.
One more question: Does it support full hd movies (1080p)?
If not what will happen when I will try to play an 1080p mkv file?
Thank you for your help!

XBMC will play most 1080p files, but they will always be scaled down to 720p for output. Some very high-spec (or out-of-spec) 1080p may stutter.

XBMC and Plex still do not support video_ts folders do they?

XBMC on AppleTV sometimes supports VIDEO_TS folders but it's hit and miss. If it can bring up the DVD menus, most of the time you can't navigate them. iOS Plex clients, including the Apple TV client, do not support VIDEO_TS folders, but I the Mac client does. You can do a very quick convert to .mkv with MakeMKV.

Thanks, that is what I thought. Unless things have changed recently I find makemkv to be very hit or miss. I do have an ATV2 and have most things converted to Apple format but would like to get to the extras at times.
