Was thinking the same. Only common denomitator is: happened in school, on my desk. Nothing even remotely dangerous there.
My first thought, is you have a defective charging adapter. Be very careful because some of those dodgy adapters can deliver mains voltage. Also, consider AppleCare with your bad luck or whatever is going on.

I had a client who bought 3 iphones and all of them were losing signal completely so basically turned into ipod.
I exchanged him 2 times and on 3rd time I had to stop it. Turns out that the voltage in his house was sinking down to 145-165 during the peak time, while it was supposed to be 220v. Basically his power outlet fried the U2 modem of iphone which is needed to receive tower signal.

Has anyone suggested static discharge yet? It's winter, it's cold and dry, and you're getting in and out of a vehicle in each case...

I'm not clear how much time elapses from closing the case and later reopening. But my first thought is that if the auto-lock setting is turned off (or set to never) and your case's magnetic lock feature isn't working, it could leave the display continually on and drain the battery (especially if already was low).
Even if this were the case (its not, talking about a few minutes at max): wouldn't explain why the devices die... (its not just discharged - they are dead)

Seriously though, it's the charger or keyboard case most likely.

Despite what some are saying, low voltage on your grid won't hurt an ipad... it just won't charge. High voltage can, but you'd notice that quickly from other devices.

A bad extension cord possibly maybe could but that is still very unlikely unless it is rapidly disconnect/reconnecting the hot or neutral several times a second. A bad cord won't somehow cause a massive voltage spike; electricity does not work that way.

A bad charger could harm it. If it's AC-DC conversion is faulty it could provide way more voltage than your ipad needs. That would be bad.

Another possibility is a faulty iCloud restore. Years ago I had a brand new iphone that screeched when you talked on it. Sounded fine on my end, but on the other end they thought I was whistling loudly. Replaced it after a few days and did an icloud restore.... new one had the same issue. Ended up resetting it as a new device and it worked fine after that.

Apple support had zero explanation why, since a restore should not include anything cellular related like that.

I set up the 2nd iPad as new. So we can rule that out.

USB cable seems the only common denominator. I changed that. We'll have to wait and see

iPad dead
I had a 2018 turn off and never turn on again. It chose to die sitting in the front seat of my Subaru Forester on the drive to school one morning. Screen turned off seemingly like normal, then just never turned back on & realized it was off completely, no boot, no charging, deader than a doornail. Took it in & Apple techs couldn’t get it to respond to anything either & had no ideas. Weird.

Hi all,

I experience a super weird issue: as by title.

This is what happended:

Monday, January 16th I read the morning news at home, drove to school, opened the iPads case only to find the iPad dead. A 2018 iPad Pro 12.9.

I ordered a new iPad Pro 12.9 to receive it a day later.

Monday 30th the exact same thing happened: I read the morning news at home, drove to school, opened the iPads case only to find the iPad dead again.

Ordered a replacement, received it yesterday. Today (30 minutes earlier) I read the morning news at home, drove to school, opened the case to check if the iPad still works. Found it to work.
Grabbed a cup of coffee, opened the case (magic keyboard) - again, iPad dead.

What the heck is going on? Anyone experienced something similar?
So much directly relevant information missing, but irrelevant info repeated so I don't know if this is a serious inquiry.

But if it is...
What chargers and cables have you used with each iPad that failed?
What accessories have you attached to them?
How did you transport these iPads?
Have they been placed near any strong electric or electromagnetic fields?
Have they been exposed to extreme temperatures (hot or cold)?
Have they been in high humidity conditions?
Have you inserted an isolated Kramden port shifter into any of them?

None and no. If I had, I'd have mentioned it

Do you put it near children? They emit an invisible field which can bork an iPad within about a 5m proximity.
And then mask the effect by engaging the cuteness cloak... Establishing a causal link sometimes requires instrumentation akin to a neutrino detector.

Of course other times it requires nothing more sensitive than a Cheerios detector.

This has become quite a drama here at the forums, and kind of a whodunit mystery. But as others may have mentioned, I say the case and/or keyboard is/are the likely suspects. I would pull the iPad completely out of any cases, keyboards, and all other attached accessories. Run the naked iPad alone over the next few days and observe the results. Then if it runs properly, individually reconnect accessories one by one to narrow down the likely cause.

What does battery settings tell you? What apps does it tell you are using your battery?

Unlikely. iPad 1 died when in a cover, 2 & 3 while housed by a Magic Keyboard.

Anyway, thanks all for your thoughts.

There is nothing I could do right now apart from waiting and see if changing the charger resolves the problem.

I was just curious if anybody experienced similar problems.

Again, thanks all
