You assume that phoning feature is central point of smartphone usage. For many people phoning has become an anecdote...

Agreed that primary use of their smartphone for some people is not as a phone but I'd contend this is still a fairly small group. And while it certainly may be pocketable for larger individuals like ChazUK, it won't be for many.

I do think it's a great looking device, nice design, terrific specs in most regards and love that it's waterproof. I just think it would find a greater audience as a tablet if it was a touch bigger.

It's a Hobson's Choice if you want good hardware.

Please explain to me where these complaints were for Apple and their offering (or lack of).

Please point me to where you criticize the iPad Mini for using two year old specs in a current generation package. Or how you're disappointed that if people want to keep the 3.5" size iPhone screen, they can't get one with current generation specs -- your so called "good" hardware.

Really -- if you show it to me, I'll know you're being fair.

After suffering the pieces of crap that were the Xperia Arc S and the Xperia Z, I'll never buy another Sony phone.

Two quick points:

- To big to even consider.

- Sony has absolutely the worst screens in the smartphone industry. You cannot believe just how bad they are. Poor color, poor contrast, etc. The screens are so bad that I can't understand why are they being released by Sony.

I know. I have a Sony Bravia TV.

But seriously. A few weeks ago I saw the Xperia Z for a few minutes and I just couldn't believe how bad the screen was (apart from really bad performance and lag, but the screen was so so bad that this other concern seemed less important).

I've seen a few Xperia phones over the years and all of them have the same bad screens. They kind of look like greyish and look terribly dull.

I don't understand why anyone would want to buy a Xperia phone after seeing one in hand. You just can't pass the horrible screen.

Everyone who owns one tells me the same thing. I was excited about a good edition of this phone, but it sounds like the screen is a total deal breaker.

How do you think we got to a 4.7-5" phone? We didn't just jump from 3.5 and 4 inchers to 5 inchers. Phones got larger and larger, and the demand/sales (I assume) got better as they got larger. Likewise, demand for smaller tablets came from the other way, and it was only inevitable until companies married phone features to tablet sizes.

And 3.5-4.5" phones sold very well. Look at all iPhone sales that aren't the iPhone 5! The problem is just that at the time of the first few iPhones, Android devices only had one way they could compete against the iPhone, and that was with a bigger screen. And at the time you couldn't get an iPhone if you weren't on AT&T. So your options have always been constrained.

Total sales of 3.5-4.5" high end devices have never been awful. But as the market grew, devices in that category are largely made of crap hardware.

I do agree I wish there are even more options for all sizes. It is a shame that my sister, who wants a mid-size phone, will have to settle for mid-range specs, but to call those specs "crap" (you've now changed it to "not high-end" which is far more accurate) is simply not true.

I haven't changed my argument at all. Go look at any Android phone under 4" and the hardware will be crap compared to flagships above 4.7".

We have far more choices than we ever did before.
Just because we have a lot of choices doesn't necessarily mean we have a wide range of variety. You can have 50 different phones to choose from all of which are 4.7-5.0". Or you could have 50 different phones to choose from ranging between 3.0-5.0". In each scenario you have the same amount of choices, but one clearly brings more variety in terms of screen size. Now scale this example out to include RAM, CPU, camera, and ppi in addition to previously mentioned screen size. A majority of the high end options are clearly above 4.7". Go below 4" and all you get is crap hardware.

Hopefully we'll have even more if these "mini" versions of the S4, HTC One, Moto XFon, etc. sell well. Google has also stated they're committed to bringing mid-size phones with higher end specs back into the game.

The only one of those that actually exists at this point is the S4 Mini. And I hope you aren't actually trying to argue that the S4 Mini has high end specs, because that would be a short debate. Not to mention it is still above the 4" mark. Go below that and hardware gets even worse.

Give it time and hope the market repsonds.
That is exactly the problem. The variety that some customers want just isn't available yet. People don't want to wait 1-2 years without a phone to get one that works best for them. Basically what I am saying is that manufacturers need to address this problem sooner rather than later. Yes, with time more of these phones could come out. But at this point, things are only getting worse with no evidence to support that high end Android phones below 4.5" will actually exist anytime soon.

I think 6 is the max for a phone. When I had a Note 2, I was always thinking that they could have make it a little bigger without making it too big. This might be past that threshold.

Its a really nice tablet ;)

Shame they had to drop to 8mp camera wise, and I wonder if they ave improved screen viewing angles / panel over the xperia Z....

Be interesting when we see it next to Note 3 & HTC Phablets ... Its gonna make S5 4" this year even more tiny.... I really wish Apple was releasing a 5" device.

S5 next year 5.5 inches? Hopefully not.. Guessing maybe 5.2.

Fair enough.

I hope sooner than later, too, for more choices.

The Xperia Z screen really is bad, a bit like a low-end panel from 2009 in terms of viewing angles. What's the point in fHD when the screen is crap?

I just have the phone as a beater, it was cheap enough - I'll probably get the next iPhone.

Good DL speeds, though, for a semi-rural area.

No, someone who owns the device and honestly comments upon it...Or am I alone, is the Xperia Z screen actually very good and no-one else has mentioned its deficiencies?

If you like it- or are just a tad unhappy because of your purchasing decision - good for you!

To me it's a disposable beater phone - I wish I'd got an HTC One or SGS4, but they weren't as cheap and this'll do me for a few months, just a pity about the crap screen.

Should have gone all the way to 7 inch IMO. That way one can buy it to use as a tablet and have phone capability on side just in case.

I guess you own or have owned Xperia phones right?

The screen is awful, whether you like it or not. A few people in this thread have commented this. Also on other forums.

It is very known that the main critic to the Z is its screen. All reviews said so.

I own three in fact and the screen is not awful but think what you want. The other poster is simply a low level troll and deserves no better response.

What you think doesn't matter one bit :) The screen is crap:

http://www.displaymate.com/Smartphone_ShootOut_3.htm

In the review, Sony was the most criticized in the scoring, with Soneira calling its performance “extremely disappointing – even shocking given that Sony was once the best display manufacturer in the world, famous for their beautiful and accurate picture quality,” Soneira wrote. He calls this “very far from reality,” that includes “awful viewing angle performance which is common for low-end displays but is inexcusable in an expensive flagship top-of-the-line product.” And there’s more, he also notes that the Bravia engine “…that they brag enhances picture quality, significantly degrades it instead,” Soneira said in the shoot-out findings.
