Any bets on Sony ruining this "flagship" release with a TN display, as they've done with the Xperia Z?

Also: nothing on that rumored spec list (except Snapdragon 800) tickles my fancy.

What do you want. 4 GB RAM? 40 MP Camera? 6000 mah battery?!

Specs wise, I don't know how much you can actually improve.

Clearly they need super enhanced vibration too, its the only way to tickle their fancy ;) smut smut :)

But yeah, it's got the best components available soonish ....

The only thing I have concerns over is the icon size from screen shots I've seen now, is that they seem awfully small on the device.

Found this leaked video online today.... hard to see actual font size since video quality not so good...

Do you honestly want 40MP camera sensors in a smartphone? And even if you can have it... are you willing to pay a high image quality penalty for it? Especially since the bokeh is sorely lacking in most smartphones and I have to bring along a 1.5lb camera to get selective focus.

4GB RAM on a smartphone is just a matter of time.

6000mAh batteries are worth squat if they aren't user-serviceable.

He did say *was* and you have to recall that the Xperia Z was only released by Sony in May this year in North America (the ZL was the only officially released Sony Xperia Z series up until then). At this point, the S4 and HTC One were out and there was no way they could release the phone at anything other than a lower price point. Here is a truly wishful-thinking offering from Best Buy ($899) :)

This. I remember looking on amazon when it first came out and it was closer to $800...or that $779 the amazon link crosses out.

Meh, Sony has to do more than offer nice specs to get people to buy their phones. They need to fix their RF performance, battery life, and above all, software support. They are at the back of the pack with LG and HTC

I think their software support is a lot better than it used to be - they seem to release updates quickly, now.

My Xperia Z got 4.2.2 when they said it would. That said, it's still a poor phone.

Please explain your reasoning

How long do you plan on keeping a phone that you think you'll need to replace it's battery?
Most batteries usually have a good service life of ~3 years, after which point the failure rates start going up. Occasionally you might find yourself with a dud that fails before those 3 years are up. Some of us don't keep phones around for that long, others do - my mom's still using the same Nokia dumbphone she's had for the past 4-5 years. Having replacement batteries that don't require a trip to the soldering station is a huge plus.

What I don't like about the HTC One is that the battery is so sealed up tight (sandwiched between the screen and logic board) it's impossible to service the battery without sending it back to HTC. Newer iPhones (4 and later) are more forgiving than that :(

Why do you consider it a poor phone?

Poor by virtue of its poor screen.

It is fast enough, has the latest version of android, is capable, but is ruined by a sub-par viewing experience.

What is the point in fHD with a crap screen? I can live with it in day-to-day use, but certainly notice the massive improvement in screen quality when I pick up my iPod Touch 5th Gen.

In the review, Sony was the most criticized in the scoring, with Soneira calling its performance “extremely disappointing – even shocking given that Sony was once the best display manufacturer in the world, famous for their beautiful and accurate picture quality,” Soneira wrote. He calls this “very far from reality,” that includes “awful viewing angle performance which is common for low-end displays but is inexcusable in an expensive flagship top-of-the-line product.” And there’s more, he also notes that the Bravia engine “…that they brag enhances picture quality, significantly degrades it instead,” Soneira said in the shoot-out findings.

Ignore that poster...just a troll.

You must be the only owner of an Xperia Z who denies its crap screen. Every other owner is a troll, right? :)

Why do you consider it a poor phone?
Like a laptop, most of your user interactions involve the display. On a desktop, if the display sucks, you can dump it and get a better one in its place. On laptops and phones, you're stuck with what you've got, but unlike laptops you don't have the option of connecting to an external display - hence the need of a high-quality display on a phone.

TFT = TN = poor quality display (relative to IPS, AMOLED and S-LCD), regardless of how Sony makes it out to be. Problem for the Z is a high-end phone with high-end internals coupled with a bargain-basement display - it's the last and most important part of the puzzle that makes the entire phone suck.

It seems like the competition should be slowing down, but it's not, in fact it's getting more fierce, love it!

Sony should add an oversampling tech to this camera like Nokia, 20MP images could be oversampled to 5MP.

And I wonder how that sound chip compares to Wolfson in Galaxy S4.

Every time I drool over a Sony phone, it ends up being a complete pile of crap.

XPERIA Z
XPERIA X1
SE Satio (Symbian, 12.1 mp camera!) <- back in my N series days

Spent $$$ on them and they were all a huge letdown.

Let's see how Honami goes

Not mind blowing specs. All the new high end Android phones coming out this Fall / Winter will have those same exact specs, if not better;

- Note 3
- Nexus-Five
- New updated HTC One+ due in December

I agree the Xperia Z was a piece of crap... Cheap enough, though.

Dismissing a phone because it has a TFT panel is pretty ridiculous IMO. I really like the one on my Active.

The Honami looks great but will AT&T offer it? Is it still going to be a glass flat back? It was both surprising and a shame that AT&T didn't offer the ZL on contract.
