By that token, you must use DVD as Blu Ray's competitor (which isn't a guaranteed pack-in. I see it on maybe 25% to 33% movies now, and that's up from the past).

Laser Disc was never a serious competitor because the format was huge. It was essentially CD density data on a huger disc.

I think the dichotomy between digital delivery is much stronger than the one with DVDs. People should be hesitant to commit more to it knowing it's on the way out.

laser disc tended to be more commercial than home..

DVD is Blu-Ray's competitor..

Samsung doesn't get stuck in proprietary standards and hope everyone else adopts them. Look at how many products Sony has that are not compatible with anything else.

Sony's only remaining business is the pro market, they are losing ground in the consumer area. They used to be the top TV maker, they killed off the Trinatron line and the others caught up. When you can buy a good Vizio for half the price people are going to forget about Sony.

Exactly. I think Sony is trying to ride on their "premium" brand image. The problem is that the image does not exist anymore in consumers' eyes. Most people won't pay twice as much to get a certain logo on the product. Similar to why Macs have never gained a huge market share - but Macs actually have something that differs them from the others and they make good profits. I also think Sony hasn't really gotten to this Smart-TV, LED and 3D thing. I'm sure they have such products but others came first and are cheaper.

Samsung and Sony are different in the sense that Samsung manufactures and sells a lot of components. Apple (and others) uses their panels, SSDs, NAND etc. They make money without selling a single device to the end-user.

A nice bit of restructuring is all they need. They've got some great products (Playstation, Bravia, Vaio, surround speakers, camcorders) and some not great (mp3 players). Cut the fat.

i hope those saying sony products are overpriced are saying the same thing about apples.

i have not had bad experiences with sony. im sure some have, just as some have had with apple, but i would hope that those folks arent writing off these companies for the misfortune that have suffered.

i believe sony stands behind quality in their products and that it is as important to them as it is to any other company. they dont take shortcuts but i do believe they are stubborn when it comes to formats.

sony is about to release a product called the ps vita. its a device that many would only consider a toy despite its capabilities. its a touch screen device with a gorgeous display being sold for 250-300 and i bet many will still say thats overpriced. i wonder what those same people would say if it had an apple logo instead of a sony.

I think arrogance had played into Sony's pricing decisions. I think they felt justified for hiking up the price because of their name. For a while that worked because they had some great products but their competitor's caught up feature and quality wise and there was really no reason to spend the premium on a tv when samsung had as good if not better TV.

Good point. I would say that samsung definitely offers a better TV feature/quality wise (until Apple enters the game and once again shakes up an entire market), but me I'm poor so I went with Phillips. It does me well though :)

You'd think.

And what a machine it is too. I'm a console/handheld gamer and I was slightly worried about 69p games overtaking and destroying the handheld market. Then the 3DS (which everyone labelled as gimmicky) exploded, in the good way, and great £30 games were sold by the millions. Huzzah!

Sony really need the Vita to start selling. Seems like a nice device but sales are lacking. The whole PSP Go chapter can't be helping their cause.

Given the rise of the iPhone and the iPod Touch, how popular can these type of hand only game units will be?

Not just Sony...
Panasonic lost $10 Billion this fiscal year. Ouch!

And Panasonic makes a quality product.

So all these losses mean what?

Simple. It's time for a shake-up in this segment, starting with the User Experience. There's little to no differentiation. You can bet Apple has plans. Won't be good news for the old giants.

I was about to say the same thing. I think what Apple brings to the table will set a new standard....again.

Sony is quite similar to Apple in some respects. Both sell expensive, premium products and use proprietary hardware, too, but the main difference is that Apple products actually feel worth it. Sony ones (in my opinion) aren't too different from the competition.

So when I have to go and buy an HDMI adapter for the Thunderbolt port on my MBA, I don't feel too annoyed about it. But when the Vita comes out and Sony expects me to buy their own proprietary memory cards (as they did with their cameras), I think "Hmm, maybe not, then."

Same goes for the VAIO range. Some of their laptops look good (although very Apple-ish) and are quite pricey, and for £200 more one can purchase a macbook with much better hardware, software and customer support.

Sony want people to pay extra for the quality that simply isn't there.
