No thread on this (for good reason, lol) but thought I'd create one as this phone came out over here (UK) yesterday.

I've always had a soft spot for Sony. The XZ Premium was one of my favourite phones but when I tried the XZ3 last year, I really disliked it.

This one is another tall, slim device. 21:9 screen, but also OLED and 4K.

I'm going to have a look at the phone tomorrow at CarPhoneWarehouse as I am really intrigued by it.

I know no one else will likely be interested :D, but I'll post anyway. :)

I’m intrigued by this phone too. Likewise I have a soft spot for Sony.

Annoyingly it looks like only the black and purple are available in the uk. Ideally I would have preferred white or grey.

Grey is available. It's exclusive to Vodafone.
Weirdly they don't appear to be in stock yet, delivery shows as being within 1-2 weeks but they are throwing in a free PS4 and Spider-Man game with it.
I'm guessing they don't hold stock locally and maybe any orders come direct from manufacturing?

I'll get a hands on tomorrow and see how I feel about it.

Yeah, because Sony now only focuses on Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. That's it.

Thanks, didn’t realise Vodafone had the grey. I was looking at sim free options as I’m currently in contract with EE. That’s probably why I only saw the black and purple options.

I’ll try to pop into a CPW over the weekend to see if I can get a feel for the phone.

I’ll be interested in your thoughts if you manage to get a hands on.

I’ve not seen much mentioned on battery life. Surely can’t be great with that size battery and such a high res screen?!

Apparently, very capable according to this guy. (4:50ish in). He couldn't test too much but said the time he has spent it's pretty good.

I've just a pretty lengthy hands on with this.

I say hands on, it was difficult to do that with it being bolstered down and running a terrible demo loop software which just made it look like garbage!

Having said that, I really really liked it.

Screen was so nice. It didn't seem to get particularly bright, but then I'm used to that now with the Pixel 3.
What struck me was how much it felt like I was using my Pixel. This is the most stock like experience I've ever seen on another non-Pixel Android device.
Big thumbs up from me as it would mean I wouldn't need to slap on a launcher.

Considering it's such a tall phone, it didn't feel cumbersome at all. The slimmer width means its easier to hold and actually really nice to use.

I had a little look at the camera, and it shot quickly and focused quickly too. I managed to do a comparison with my Pixel 3 on a random shot in store, and as expected the Pixel 3 took the better picture when I pixel peeped. But there didn't seem to be as much noise as there normally is with Sony devices.
This is the biggest thing for me really. I've always been able to take decent pictures with Sony phones, but nothing will compare to the Pixel 3 for me in terms of ease of use, simplicity in snapping and overall results.

It is quite frankly staggering, how good the Pixel 3's camera is. I know I'd be moving to a less capable camera with it, but I'd be gaining more function in terms of ultra wide shots, optical zoom and better video recording output.

The longer screen looked like it would be really useful for things like web pages, whatsapp, messages, forums etc. My only concern would be whether apps are optimised or if there would be some black bar nonsense going on? As there's very little in terms of reviews online, and not many people have them - it's difficult to tell if this would be a problem.

I watched a video that was stored on the phone of some sort of action movie trailer, and the aspect ratio came into its own there. Video looked absolutely amazing, and I'd happily watch content on it. I'd also use it for PS4 remote play, as I've done in the past with previous Sony devices.

Lots to consider. I get 30% off with Vodafone as part of my employee advantage scheme, so I could get one of these for £35 a month with 60GB of data and a free PS4 with Spider-Man.
I already have a PS4 Pro, so could sell the free one off for £200 (?) which roughly makes the whole lot work out at around £650 over the 2 years.
Seems like a bit of a steal - especially seeing as it's the superior colour (grey) too. I checked the purple one out and I really didn't like it. Not my bag at all.
The black was ok, if a little boring. I like that the grey looks to have a metal look band around the whole thing, which I think makes it look a little more premium.

I might wait for some more reviews to crop up and go from there.

I like this phone a lot but there are 2 main deal breaker for me here, at least in the states. One, is the lack of VoLTE and WiFi calling on T-Mobile and second the price. I can’t believe Sony is charging $949

i would have considered one but having no wifi calling or volte on t-mobile and no wireless charging is a deal breaker

Yeah at this price point I don't blame you. Should have it all really when they're charging what they are for it.

US carrier certifications for Tmo, Verzion and ATT (eg give us your money so we can tick off on our system that your phone could be compatible to already defined standards) will be available on US spec model to be released mid July if you are OK with only black and purple colors.

Tmo requires certification for wifi calling and volte feature in order for a phone to be whitelisted on their system. Truth is all of the new phones can do that but Tmo wants you to buy phones from them or pay if you don't have a carrier deal with htem. Same thing goes for ATT with HD Voice which is a worldwide standard and all of the new phones support it and work without any problems across the globe and hundreds of carriers but not on ATT. ATT keeps HD Voice only for the phones they sell by blacklisting everything else.

Anyway biggest difference between international spec and US spec is Verizon comparability which means you can buy this phone unlocked and use it on big red. I don't have actual info for T-mobile but Sony did have previous flagships certified with T-Mobile before, last one being XZ2 Compact form a year ago. It's a safe bet Xperia 1 will have both of these features.

Initial impressions? How’s the battery?

Initial impressions are just as good as they were with the actual hardware as my hands on in the store.

It really is a lovely phone - well designed and great screen.
I like a lot about it.

It's a very stock Android experience, which I have come to love. Stock is the only way for me.

The tall aspect ratio is actually really great. I have had a look at some video content on the device and it is the first phone I would happily watch a movie or TV series on. That ratio, along with the 4K OLED is truly amazing.

It's a fantastic screen with great viewing angles and absolutely zero colour shift when you tilt it. Not sure how they've managed that with it being OLED, but it's impressive.

I much prefer the tall screen, slimmer profile and non curved edge of this device than something like the S10+.

Always on Display is brilliant.

Battery life - well I exepcted mediocre results but I've been seriously impressed. For a device with such a small battery, it is very good.
This is today's result.

GjprZVA.jpg

Granted, I only have 10% left at half 7 when I took the screenshot, but I've been off work today so have been hammering the phone with all sorts.

Can't complain at that at all.

Some pics - the grey is easily the best colour IMO.

An example of how much more content you can get:

MjqgxEq.jpg

So far so good then?

Well, not quite. I will be returning it despite really liking the phone.

There's just one reason for returning it too... the camera.

The camera on the Pixel 3 is literally the greatest phone camera I have ever used and unfortunately, this just does not come close.
Don't get me wrong, it is capable of capturing a fantastic photo.

Case in point below:

ngehn8M.jpg

Great shot, right?!

But you want to see how many I tried to take before I got one that came out well.
Not only that, but it was painful to try and switch through different modes to attempt to get this.

I had to use Manual mode to get that photo, as you can automatically enable HDR that way. There's no such option in Auto mode.
What I have found in using Manual is it makes images a little brighter, and HDR is indeed active and you can tell.

But man, is it slow. It's just typical Sony. Camera interface is sluggish, it takes too long to load the app and the processing time after a photo is shot means you get a little turning circle over the thumbnail in the bottom right which lasts a good 5 seconds before you can view it.
It's so disappointing.

I picked my Pixel 3 back up for the first time in 24 hours just now and I honestly feel like Google have just nailed virtually everything in that phone.
And to think I was so critical of it when it was unveiled and released.

Talk about getting it right.

If Sony's camera was on par with even the S10, which I enjoyed using as it was super fast and reliable - then I'd be happy and I would definitely be considering keeping it. As it stands though, I am enjoying using the Pixel so much that I don't want to part with it - even though the Xperia 1 hardware is truly impressive.

That’s a shame because the phone itself looks quite nice I could live without wireless charging but I wouldn’t want to have a dodgy camera..

Auto mode has always been hit or miss even if you are shooting the same thing but from slightly different angle but I wouldn't call it a failure, it's inconsistent. With my XZ2 I had low light shots that turned out better than on iPhone X that's because Sony very does well in setting the mood in the picture.

I didn't play with still imagery that much on X1 but I did with video and it's the hands down the best video on any mobile phone. Stabilization on 1080p is proper Steadycam like that I haven't seen on any other smartphone including our nerd's P30 Pro while UHD has some hell of a bitrate where details are crisp as hell. Great for wide shots with some panning. An there is wide angle video with distortion correction which is a first ever. Reason why we got it in production is cause we can control and monitor our Venice camera with it, it's additional viewfinder for me on the set :)

Anyway I can go on and try to take some challenging shots in Auto mode. I know in advance that in outdoors with proper daylight it will take shots as good as any phone cause that's been true since XZ2 pretty much, but when it fails is indoor shots due to it's spot metering nature instead of averaging. To be honest I don't think HDR makes that much of a difference unlike other phones that use hell of a stacking solutions which Sony clearly does not but .. I have to blast your Pixel phone. I absolutely hate what Pixel does to low lit high contrast scenes, it evens it out completely and if you work with the spotlights it kills any notion that spotlight is there cause it will try to contain the highlights so hard while other phones let those highlights blow out but preserve the actual lighting conditions.

With smartphone photography it's always either or but if you do most of your photos indoors then any Xperia simply is not up to par compared to P30 Pro.

Manual HDR - throws off white balance and brings very little addition

I mean your opinion is your opinion and you can blast the Pixel as much as you want lol. But having them side by side I know which one takes a better photo. And it's the Pixel.

But most importantly, I need the camera to be reliable and actually be useable when trying to take a quick photo. With the Xperia 1, I need a crystal ball to know when the dog is going to be in the right position to take the photo as the phones camera is simply too slow and sluggish to be even useable.
