How is Sony even a threat to Apple's strategy these days? The Z5 Compact is the only thing that looks mildly interesting for me.
Higher resolution than 1080p for a smartphone screen is probably the biggest gimmick next to the world's thinnest phones. 4K will look nice and noticeable on a "55 screen for a TV, not a "5.5 screen. How much improvement did Quad HD screens show over Full HD during the last year? In most cases, it reduced battery life. Most people can perfectly live on 720p/1080p for the rest of their lives. I doubt most people have their movie collection at higher than 1080p these days. I settled for 720p for most of my movies just for size and convenience. The perfect middle ground for me.
Subsidized Sony flagships are generally found on T-Mobile and sometimes on Verizon. Sony has had very little presence in the US in most industries except selling PS4's. They had a minor presence 10 years ago when the brand was called Sony Ericsson and nothing has changed since. Tim Cook and Jony Ive have nothing to worry about. The iPhones will still sell in droves with just the tiniest, incremental upgrades. At its peak, I see near 50-50 in the USA between iOS vs Android and 35-60 globally. This is my prediction for the next 10 years. With 5% left for WP. Microsoft may peak at 10% but I say single digits in the mobile front.
Sony is no different than the failing HTC these days, just more established and diversified. Tim Cook has nothing to worry about. Samsung and Google? Maybe a little. Sony? LOL! Hell no. Like Nokia, Sony's best days are behind them. Just some blind loyalty and nostalgia distorts reality here. Sony overcharges from reputation, not quality. LG, Xiaomi, Meizu, ZTE, ASUS Gionee/BLU, and Oppo/OnePlus, those are future brands to watch for. All of them are already offering better price points and even surpassing Sony in features and design. Sony is part of a mobile club consisting of Nokia, Motorola, HTC, and BlackBerry. The has-beens club although Sony probably never reached the marketshare that Nokia, Motorola, and RIM once had.
