That is due to the 4k recording isn't it so nothing to do with the display. Can you tell me what phone doesn't turn the camera off after a certain length of time when recording in 4k?

Btw the clue was actually written on the screen of the phone in the photo you posted.

From Phonearena:

"... we were still not very pleasantly surprised to see the 'overheating, shutting app down' message while checking out the camera interface on the Xperia Z5. And no, we were not even recording the demanding 4K video that is known to cause phones to get hot - it was just looking through the various camera options available, right after checking out the overall interface. Put simply, the camera app shut down with no apparent reason, and that's what's bothersome."

BTW, I record in 4K all the time and have never had this issue. Then again, that's just me. But to be honest I've never seen this issue of 4K recording reported on any Galaxy flagship. I could be wrong though.

Just tried three 5 minute UHD videos and it didn't stop on my S6 edge but it got so hot I was afraid to do more I case it cracked the back glass like it did on my friends Z3 this summer at the Goodwood festival.

If Phonearena got that message after just playing around with it then that is bad but if it was after they played around with it after loads of others used it then maybe that would be different.

To be fair, I'd say final judgement should be made with the final retail product. So things can change/updated by that time.

Spot on there, let's see what we get in the shops. I had the Xperia Z, Z1, Z1Ultra and Z2 and although I only had the Z2 for a couple of weeks I thought it was a great phone. I would love to see Sony bring out a really great phone this year, it has been a while since I had one so it is time to go back.

I remember going from my Xperia Z Ultra to my Nokia 1520 and it made the the Nokia feel small.

View attachment 579076 Well this isn't good. Here's a pic of the Z5 at IFA. This isn't even the demanding 4K display of the Z5 Premium. It seems the 810 even on v2.1 still has overheating issues. OEMs should wait for the 820, that's the one meant for 4K.
I offer this video as a rebuttal. Or, at the very least, a different opinion:

As Sevanw said in a pervious post, let's wait and see what the retail units are like. I think we will be pleasantly surprised.

Should've went OLED instead of 4K. Who cares about a 4K resolution on a phone screen? Just goes to show how out of touch Sony is with reality.

That's the Z5 not the Z5 Premium. BTekt wasn't allowed to play with the UI on the premium model.

BTekt has done 4K comparison heat tests and shutdown test before. The Note 4 (5 wasn't out the) force closed its camera after 6.5/7 minutes. The S5 was just over 5 mins.

"If you look at the Xperia Z5 Premium and the iPhone 6 Plus side by side, there’s a clear winner, and for once in many years, it’s not the iPhone. People at the event seemed to love the new design and finally felt that Sony refreshed their design language and gave fans something new. Fans of Xperia handsets had been craving for a change in design for some time, and the Xperia Z5 is finally fulfilling their requests. If the Xperia Z5 Premium price is made affordable and balanced, around $600 for example, Tim Cook and Jony Ive should start revising and reconsidering a bit."

Pity that 5.5" is just too small.
I could not use less than 5.7" which is often not big enough...

So that means for 99% of the time, the device is not a 4k device.....

I would feel cheated paying the premium for a 4k phone, although I would mostly be getting it for the screen size anyway rather than the 4k screen. This would also explain the supposedly 2 day battery life. So in short, Its basically a shinier standard Z5 most of the time.

Why would you feel cheated? The phone will show 4K when something that is 4K is being displayed...that means the phone will adjust.

So with most apps, games etc...being optimised for HD1080P, you won't have compatibility issues, and then when you do get a piece of media that is 4K the phone will adjust to it.

Seems like a win-win.

Yeah basically.

The bigger screen, the shiny exterior and a 4K display for when you need it - probably about 10 minutes a week.

I was listening to This Week in Tech and Leo was saying how all these tech journalists at the event rushed over after the show to a table set up with the new phones. They were all going crazy over the phones on display and marveling at the 4k but little did they know the Premium wasn't even on that table. So thy were all hyping themselves up over 1080p screens

I actually think that Sony have kept the Premium back for 4-6 weeks so that they can test what people are saying about it.

That way, this is all down to software adjustments so they could easily make the call in October about whether to allow the Premium to run at 4K more, or if the only activate it for 4K content.

Either way, I think it's the best solution - they get bragging rights, but almost make a sensible decision for battery life etc.

It's like having the 6th gear on a car. You'll rarely use it, but it's nice having it there - and when you do get the chance, it's awesome.

How is Sony even a threat to Apple's strategy these days? The Z5 Compact is the only thing that looks mildly interesting for me.

Higher resolution than 1080p for a smartphone screen is probably the biggest gimmick next to the world's thinnest phones. 4K will look nice and noticeable on a "55 screen for a TV, not a "5.5 screen. How much improvement did Quad HD screens show over Full HD during the last year? In most cases, it reduced battery life. Most people can perfectly live on 720p/1080p for the rest of their lives. I doubt most people have their movie collection at higher than 1080p these days. I settled for 720p for most of my movies just for size and convenience. The perfect middle ground for me.

Subsidized Sony flagships are generally found on T-Mobile and sometimes on Verizon. Sony has had very little presence in the US in most industries except selling PS4's. They had a minor presence 10 years ago when the brand was called Sony Ericsson and nothing has changed since. Tim Cook and Jony Ive have nothing to worry about. The iPhones will still sell in droves with just the tiniest, incremental upgrades. At its peak, I see near 50-50 in the USA between iOS vs Android and 35-60 globally. This is my prediction for the next 10 years. With 5% left for WP. Microsoft may peak at 10% but I say single digits in the mobile front.

Sony is no different than the failing HTC these days, just more established and diversified. Tim Cook has nothing to worry about. Samsung and Google? Maybe a little. Sony? LOL! Hell no. Like Nokia, Sony's best days are behind them. Just some blind loyalty and nostalgia distorts reality here. Sony overcharges from reputation, not quality. LG, Xiaomi, Meizu, ZTE, ASUS Gionee/BLU, and Oppo/OnePlus, those are future brands to watch for. All of them are already offering better price points and even surpassing Sony in features and design. Sony is part of a mobile club consisting of Nokia, Motorola, HTC, and BlackBerry. The has-beens club although Sony probably never reached the marketshare that Nokia, Motorola, and RIM once had.

Sony had to destroy and rebuild over the last few years, regarding phones. They've made some great decisions and some seemingly crazy ones.

However their Compact range is very popular in Europe and particularly Japan. The Z3 Compact outsells every other phone, including both iPhones. And the Z5 Compact should fix the average camera too.

It's the only genuine rival to the iPhone 6 in terms of similar screen size, and it's got great battery life, it's waterproof and now (finally) the camera seems awesome. Let's see what reviews say.

I think Sony had a long-term plan, and it's taken them a few years to get it right. The Z5 Compact will be at least £110 cheaper than the 16GB iPhone 6S as well.

(FYI I had a Z3 Compact and loved everything except the camera).

I just got gear vr on my gs6 and can see the pixels.its not that bad but if the gs6 was 4k it would be perfect.

Can't wait for a 4k galaxy device to test out the next gen vr

Lol, people are still moaning about 4k in the Z5 Premium despite the fact that it adjusts, and is needed for VR.

Its funny how people complain when an Android OEM makes a great and innovative step.

BTW, QHD displays DID NOT decrease battery life, the Note 4, LG G3, Nexus 6, Droid Turbo etc... All gave great battery life vs. their HD1080P predecessors.

The Note 4 despite having a battery that is only a measly 20mAh more than the Note 3 and a QHD Display managed to greatly out run the Note 3.

Was that not down to efficiencies found in other areas such as better screen tech and software refinements?

Rather than compare one year vs the previous, how about a much closer like for like:

The Oppo Find 7 (QHD) and the Find 7a (FHD). Both announced and released at nearly the same time - the 7a was 3-4 weeks earlier.

7a is on 801AB@2.3ghz with the 7 on 801AC@2.5ghz. The 7 has an extra 200mAh and +1GB RAM. Same OS.

Yet only one drinks battery like crazy - see the Oppo forums. Review sites also noted significant battery life differences (GSMa scores the 7a at 60h and the 7 at 44h).

I personally had both phones. Since the 7a was out first I got that and typically got a good 4 to 5 hours screen on a daily cycle, almost never had to top up. When the 7 arrived I got that too but returned it after a week as the battery was always dead mid-afternoon. Kept the 7a and my conclusion was the QHD in the 7 was the culprit.

That could be due to Oppo going for a bad quality QHD panel, Sony had a similar situation with two diff. FHD Panels. The FHD panel in the Xperia Z1 was a power hog yet the FHD in the Z2 is very efficient and of a higher quality.

People love blaming resolution when it is not at fault.

What I have just remembered is that the Snapdragon 801 wasn't exactly made to run a QHD panel, the LG G3 had issues, this is why Samsung held off using a QHD panel in the S5, they waited for the Snapdragon 805 to be available THEN they launched a S5 Plus in S.Korea, with QHD display and Snapdragon 805.

So Oppo maybe guilty of mismatching HW, thats not due to QHD, thats due to them forcing matters.

Oppo chose a dodgy panel in their flagship vs lower tier 7a? Source?

Another example:

Yoga 2 Pro playing 1080p movie looped @ 3200x1800 lasting for 5.5 hours versus 1920x1080 lasting 7 hours. Same laptop. Same panel. Same test.

If resolution has zero impact on battery life, why are Sony rumoured to be running the Z5 Premium at 1080 and resolution switching to 4k for video? Why do games run smoother at lower resolutions with the same options enabled? Is it not because they require more CPU/GPU performance which in turn requires more...

Lol, why do you take it that far? Where in my post did I say resolution has zero impact on battery life, really annoys me when someone gets ridiculous when we are trying to have a decent debate.

My point, maybe I should have made it clearer earlier, is that resolution can't always be to blame, when high res is done right it won't impact battery life significantly.

I can point out many many examples where resolution went up and battery life didn't see much of an impact. The Galaxy S5 had a QHD variant released in S.Korea, if I'm not mistaken despite the larger display res battery life did not suffer.

Oppo could have used a lower quality QHD Panel that is not as efficient, yes. There is a lot more to the display and how the hardware handles it other than resolution. We have seen significant leaps in display size and res in the last 5 years yet slow progress in terms of battery yet we get a whole lot more out these phones than we used to.
