The Sony is old & under powered and the Gateway is a monster for the past and is more of a joke than anything else. But the Dell XPS M2010 is a more serious compititor for the new iMac in my opinion, although it is way overpriced. I don't understand why Dell markets it as a laptop.

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m2010?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~section=specs#tabtop

In the immortal (and barely relate able) words of Zap Brannegan: "She's built like a steakhouse, but she handles like a bistro" :D
That's one huge laptop

OK, i actually saw this thing in a best buy. Always with a look-out for the details: the clear frame. On the upper right corner is the power indicator that seems to be milled in the shiny part so it's frosted & catches the light from a green LED so you know its turned on. Great, but the rounded corner catches the green light too so it is not as clean looking.

Also the little keyboard cover seems flimsy & pointless.

That's been out for a while.

This is Sony's answer to the iMac. Notably better as a mini-HTPC / bedroom / kids PC thanks to Cablecard and Vista Media Center, not as hot comparing the flagship models as a general-purpose desktop due to inferior specs.

In either case though, is it that onerous to have a separate system unit that gives you monitor-sizing flexibility and actual, desktop componentry? Surely not.

I really like the Vaio.....much more then the current imac.......... I hope next time Apple gets it right.

I couldn't have said it better myself. If I was buying today, I would get the VAIO and wait for Apple to fix the present design back to the way it should be.

The speed of the VAIO is different from the youtube review. Sony's website has two versions, 1.73 GHz and 2.0 GHz. The 1.66 GHZ model must have been an early review machine. Then again, this latest all-in-one model hasn't been officially released yet.

Sony's all in one has a pretty light GPU in it the 8400m but on the otherhand it has a tv tuner in it something that Apple just cant seem to understand. iMac should come with one in my view because lets face it you cant be a media hub without Tv no matter how much spin is applied.

Is he selling that? Or reviewing it? I know sometimes revierers get kickbacks but that was too OTT.
It doesn't actually look too bad. I quite like the glass surround. But the monitor's small, the keyboard looks flimsy, it's got vista, why the hell does the back need to be detatchable?

Fanboy alert.

Intel doesn't pay anyone to use their Intel Inside stickers. They're supplied to vendors because Intel wants to increase their mindshare, and vendors use them because Intel already has great mindshare and it increases the "value" to ignorant customers. ...
I'm shocked. The idea that companies would plaster those butt-ugly stickers on computers when they don't have to is a revelation to me. I also assumed that they were paid to do so as I can't think of any reason why they would do it otherwise.

Like the poster above, the first thing I noticed about this product demo was how the three ugly stickers on the bottom left completely ruined the "floating on glass" effect Sony was trying for.

Also and PS, could we stop with the stupid "fanboy" remarks, please?

I think any post that uses it at all (including this one), should just be filtered out at the top level. It's an indicator of having no argument and nothing to say when the "f" word is dragged out and it's used more frequently by people who have a "fanboy" mentality themselves than anything. If you want to show off your intellectual paucity on any forum, just throw in a few "fanboy" remarks and some LOL's and you have achieved your goal.

Comes with built-in TV card and BluRay Drive = Kick Ass !!

Too bad it's not capable of displaying 1080p :p

Although I would love to have an optical HD drive built into the iMac, I simply won't invest in any of the technologies until one of them has "won". Besides, there aren't many movies worth watching available in HD yet.

WOW! The base version (non-BD) is $1900 and has a 1.5GHz CPU! YUK!

The BD version is $2900!

As far as TV tuners are concerned, my local cable company scrambles all digital channels to force you to buy a cable box. Other countries have different standards requiring different hardware in each country. At any rate, watching TV on a computer monitor can be a dismal experience, particularly if the scaling is done poorly. I would rather have it as an option.

Am I missing something here? What exactly has does Apple need to fix back to the way it should be that you would jock the Vaio AIO over the iMac???

Let's see, the Vaio:

Sits too low with zero height adjustment.
Glossy screen much glossier than the iMac.
Low CPU specs, tops of at 2.2 Ghz
Expensive without reason. Starts at $1899 @ 1.5 Ghz and tops of at $2899 @ 2.2 Ghz.
Much deeper footprint than the iMac.
No bluetooth.
Aesthetics clean but resembles a Windows Vista knockoff look.

Let's see the iMac:
Starts at $1199 @ 2.0 Ghz and tops off at $2299 @ 2.8 Ghz
Screen sizes 20" and 24"
Regal design for an entertainment system.
Glass overlay to protects LCD from families with small kids that like to touch everything.
Glossy screen not as saturated as the Vaio
Superior keyboard design
Aesthetically pleasing
24" can be mounted on the wall.
Built-in bluetooth
Slot load drive, nothing to break like a pop out drive.
Dual boot option.

Again, what exactly did Apple need to fix that Sony is doing right?

It's not a review...

After watching the video myself, I find it important to point out why this guy says "sleek" so many times.... because he's selling it! So many people make fun of this "review" but they didn't catch on that it wasn't a review, it's a sales pitch. Tiger Direct sells electronics!! Has anyone seen the Home Shopping Network on TV? This is just what they sound like.

Again, he's not a reviewer, he's a salesman!

As for the Sony, it is much nicer looking in person (a subjective opinion of course), though it's primary fault is the lack of any height adjustment.

P.S. - As for the remark about fanboys, I think posters here need to recognize that there are both trolls and fanboys on the forums. To think otherwise is pretty close-minded. On the other hand, you just have to filter those posts out. I think the majority of people here (or at least a good-sized chunk) are both intelligent and helpful. :)

Much love,

Ado

Me thinks you are mixing your metaphors a bit here. :p

Ha, ha. Whatever.

How about ...
When you compare specs, Apple wins.
When you compare price, Apple wins!

I think Sony comes closer than any of the other Windoze PC peddlers at providing the consumer with technology packaged with good aesthetics.

The later Sony does better with blueray and TV tuner built in but price is v.high for a fairly low spec computer. But this is all fiction since the Sony in question is not even out yet, by the time it is an HD drive for the imac could be a month or two away.

Both a built in HD optical drive and TV tuner would have been nice options for the imac, i for one was hoping they would be on the custom order list.

I can see the "what if HD DVD wins" argument but worst case you are left with an expensive 50Gb backup data drive that also happens to do all that a superdrive does ... folks at apple can't take the bad press risk though.

I would like to bet that apple had plans for an HD drive assuming that blueray would by now have been declared the winner in the press and apple were ready with a replacement for the existing imac. But they were caught off guard by the lack of progress made by blueray and scared off backing a looser as blueray has yet to take a hold of the market.

Apple havn't had a great year thus far with the timing of announcements, all feels a bit disjointed, lots of good stuff (more later this week no doubt, then again in Oct.) But they have missed the opportunity they had to build on the hype around the iphone with a massive splash of new products all ready and waiting for the rush pre-christmas. They have limited the damage and probably made the best of a bad situation.... but still not the slick marketing operation we have come to expect.

I want to see the iMac compete against it with sonys 1.66ghz core 2 duo. The sony comp doesnt hold a candle to the imac.

It looks like SONY stole some ideas from Apple's 20th Anniversary All in One Mac. Monitor on this sony is simply to low, I'll be seeing massage therapist more often, would have to rest this PC on yellow pages book. Specs are not compared to imac.
