Kind of a pointless rant thread but I was hoping for a change in scenery to my wallpaper. We had Yosemite and El Capitan the past two years with mountain wallpapers and now Sierra.

Could using mountains again in the naming scheme mean something? Could macOS be moving to a 3 year big update cycle like the iPhone? Perhaps I'm overthinking it but you never know. Thoughts?

And is it seriously still called "10.12"? After dropping the X it should be macOS 12... (Not that it would matter much...)

At the risk of being pedantic, the only mountain out of those three is El Capitan, and even that's a stretch. Yosemite is a huge national park, and Sierra is a broad term that refers to the region of the Sierra-Nevada mountain range but can also apply to any spot within its general vicinity.

But, true, they're all somewhat reminiscent of one another.

I do rather like the name Sierra, though. Much better than El Capitan.

Yeah I thought they would goto 12, and gobble up the X. macOS 12. then iOS 10. Would have been cool. Cause the stupid part is they're going to say macOS 10.12? which is essentially saying macOS X.12 again. If you are going to get rid of the X then get rid of the X (10), macOS 12. and up to 99...missed opportunity...
[doublepost=1465896001][/doublepost]You know what's even sicker if you think about the core OS, now don't go all crazy but, the Mac OS 4,5,6,7,8,9 aren't even really part of this new darwin unix kernel, that these all new four platforms are about that X or 1..9 is dead weight. I mean don't get me wrong, classic is awesome and all they were really a different OS in general.

oh and btw, the Sierra Mountains Picture is pretty cold!

Why "12" exactly? They had 8, 9... And then 10 for 15 years. 10.1, 10.2, 10.3... If each point release is a new "OS" then we'd be on what, 21, 22? Which OSX point release signifies a whole number change to 11?

According to Apple: none so far. It's MacOS 10... Point 12.

The new file system is going to be a massive internal change, so I've got a feeling that now that they've dropped the "X" they're going to use the new fs as a reason to bump the version number to 11.0 next year, and avoid 10.13. (Adobe and Corel both did numbering tricks to avoid 13 as well.)

The name, though, is just going to be macOS.

Because "in spirit" the 10 or X is still with us, we just wouldn't use it. It's kinda like when we write 2016 as '16, or 06/13/16, we know there is the 2000+16, but we just drop it...

I don't like the new wallpaper at all.
There are tons of wonderful wallpapers out there.
Sierra or not - they could pick up something so much better than that picture.
Im not talking as NatGeo Photographer now, even as a simple user you can see the person who has chosen this one has no taste at all.

I wonder if there is an issue with Sierra Entertainment (formally Sierra On-Line.)

I think the whole naming the OS needs to go. If they were intent on making their naming conventions the same, they'd drop the name.

iOS 10
macos Sierra
watchOS 3
tvOS 10

I never got the whole California naming idea, and I've not really warmed up to it since they adopted it.

How you would identify each years new macOS release then?

I prefer 10.12, 10.11, 10.10, etc, though I have used the California naming convention in the past. I usually feel dirty and need to shower afterwards :p
Would your opinion change if they used famous areas of New England as a naming convention? :p
