Well I'm kinda convinced not to purchase a sound card for two reasons - 1. Logitech Z-5500 seems to have good onboard features as pointed out. 2. Lack of availability of consumer sound cards. Now the question is what kind of connector to get? I mean what do I have to tell the shopkeeper? Just TOSLINK? And will it work with iMac? Do both of them (iMac and Mac Pro) have the same audio processors?

You just need an toslink cable if you're going to connect the speakers to your Mac Pro. But if you have any intention of plugging them into an iMac, you need an toslink cable with mini-toslink adaptor - an example here; the small adaptor is because the Headphone jack on non-Mac Pro machines are hybrid digital/analog plugs.

They'd be slightly different hardware-wise since the Mac Pro has a greater number of connections...

But, afaik, all macs since 2006 "Intel High Definition Audio" chips... I can't tell you specifics though since I don't have a 2010 iMac.

For the love of God, yes. The only difference between the Mac Pro and the iMac is the type of connector.

Thanks for clarifying this. I don't need the specs but wanted to know if they were different. So, finally decided to get iMac 27 inch Quad core + Logitech Z-5500 (and TOSLINK). Any changes tell me. Thanks guys for all this help:):apple:
