soy milk does not replace cow milk in terms of nutrients. But it has other benefits...
Are you talking about unfortified soy milk?

Brands like Silk and 8th Continent seem to add most missing nutrients back in, no?

Here's the Silk nutrient label:

Is there a reason you're averse to dairy milk?

I'm not averse to dairy milk and I like drinking it; however, there are two reasons why I've considered switching over to soy or rice milk:

(1) I've got a serious weight problem, and I'm thinking the soy milk could be beneficial with its lower calories.

(2) I'm extremely concerned and distressed by the thought of cows having to be in a cage all day. I think a lot of us milk drinkers envision in our minds of the cows roaming around freely on a nice green pasture, but I suspect that hasn't been the case for many years. :(

Im a vegetarian not quite vegan, still occasional eggs and chocolate, however I dont generally drink milk, Silk is fairly common in my house ANd i like most flavors

Another interesting vegan drink is Almond milk, specifically Chocolate Almond Breeze, I find it Quite Good.

:)

I also drink Silk. I prefer the Vanilla flavor because well, that's the only flavor I've tried so far. I use it for my coffee in the morning and with my cereal at night. Much tastier than milk, but as a stand alone drink or to dip with cookies I prefer regular milk (lowfat or whatever).

Lots of silk drinkers here. you guys should give 8th Continent a try. May find it better than silk (or worse). I couldn't go back to silk after tasting 8th Continent.

I second that. Though it doesn't mix well with coffee, I've found. But I love the taste of vanilla 8th Continent straight.

Has anyone tried this stuff? Does it taste anything like real milk?

I have tried most of the soy milks. Some of them are great.

Also for anyone here that has thyroid problems you are going to want to avoid Soy at all costs. Try rice milk. I like it better, its not as "rich" and it taste great with cereal.

here is some great info on Soy and the dangers over consuming it can cause:

"According to the Soy Online Service, for infants, any soy is too much. For adults, just 30 mg of soy isoflavones per day is the amount found to have a negative impact on thyroid function. This amount of soy isoflavones is found in just 5-8 ounces of soy milk, or 1.5 ounces of miso."

Makes me fart.
Apparently you are not alone, Sesshi.

I hear that. Lactating for a few years will also put you in the contemplative camp re: drinking the milk of another species, intended only for their young.

MacDrive, I think the taste of rice milk is better than soy, but it's really pretty low in nutritional value, and can be constipating. There is also a pretty big controversy on the benefits vs. risks of soy in terms of the effects of phytoestrogens and soy isoflavones on the body. I say go for alternative beverages. Hopefully you're eating a varied diet of healthy foods and don't need to rely on the various milks for too much nourishment. Good luck to you!

Silk Plain Flavour

I finally worked up the courage to try some tonight. I've had a quart sitting in the fridge for 2 days now. I first tried a little bit in a new paper cup. My initial taste interpretation was that of barley; it tasted like barley for some reason.

Another thing I noticed was the colour; it's not a bright shade of white like real milk is.

I agree that it tastes like some sort of grain, although it's verging on cardboard. My housemate loves the stuff and when we're out of the normal full fat stuff, I drink hers. Her milk doesn't taste all that good.

Don't feel you have to quote me out of context, remember.

I'll chime in only to day that we've had Rice Dream in our house almost exclusively for about 4 years, and I actually prefer the taste of that now over cow's milk. (Helps that I've become lactose intolerant after giving up dairy).

As far as soy milk goes, I actually prefer the stuff that tastes like soy, at least in small doses. Silk and Soy Dream are nice substitutes for cow's milk, but the stuff you get at Chinese supermarkets has it's own delicious taste. Whole Foods also carries VitaSoy http://www.vitasoy-usa.com/ which is one common brand.

Plus, MACDRIVE, keep in mind that all of these milk substitutes soy, rice, almond (I don't like it, but my wife does) all have lots of fat (oil) and sugars to approximate the taste of cow's milk. The other advantage of traditional unsweetened soy milk is that it has lots less calories.

8th continent, all the way!

i really prefer the 8th continent light vanilla soymilk, but recently i bought the silk vanilla, and it was pretty good. i had tried silk in the past but really didn't care for it, but i think they're changed their formula since then.

i have tried the plain soymilk time and time again, and for some reason it does just taste kinda like cardboard. :( i used to drink skim milk only, so the light soymilk has the same consistency and seems more like moo milk to me...the vanilla just masks the cardboard flavor. :)

Me too, which really made me wonder if that's why the dairy people market as much as they do. (i.e. if people give up dairy for a fair amount of time and try to go back, they're likely to find that they're intolerant, ... so they market so people won't give dairy up...)

I'll jump in on this though I'm a bit late.
I've started drinking soon recently, and like PlaceofDis said- Silk is the best (That I've tried). My only problem with the stuff is it has a very watery consistency.

They do not taste the same. However that is not necessarily a bad thing. Your tastes and preferences change over time. For example, if someone switches from 2% fat milk to 1/2% milk and then tries 2% again they will likely say "how did I ever drink 2% - it is too thick." In the same way, your tastes will change to prefer soy or rice milk.

Many people probably like Silk because it has added sugar. I prefer a vanilla soymilk with no added sugar. Westsoy is one brand I use, but sometimes I buy a grocery store's own brand.
