More likely the oils from your hands vs. variability from factory finishes.

Yeah, I'm sure it is. I just wonder if anything can be done about it. My particular machine seems to be a bit of a dud ($4k dud, but a dud); I'm on my third screen, already had a command-key replaced, and the deteriorating finish. I've been using Apple computers since the 90s and I'd say this is definitely my worst experience so far. (I did have a "Quicksilver" G4 733 that was kinda garbage, but only because it was dead slow! The build quality was excellent.)

I've had mine for half a year and it's discoloured around the edges already (white marks). There's also a dent by the trackpad where I dropped my stainless steel watch on it, but that's expected.

Perfect state, but found one scratch probably done by Speck Case or metal button of my shirt. I own it since September 2018.

Like others here, excellent. Maybe some scuffing around the USB-C port but other than that, I really can't fault the Space Gray anodizing, even on the bottom.

Hmm... Not so good for me. The top panel has fading around the wrists and near the esc key. I'm on this thing a lot, but that shouldn't make any difference. At least certainly not after only 15 months. I wonder if there's any variability in the quality of finish from the factory? (I would assume there must be some, but I wouldn't expect it to be this pronounced.)

I suppose I do rest my wrists a certain amount of the time while typing (and I certainly rests them when mousing/scrolling, or reading/researching, thinking through a problem, etc.). But there's no way that should cause this kind of problem. My previous mid-2012 15" was pretty much perfect after 4 years.

A heads'-up here: this thread is discussing the 12" MacBook, which is a different machine than the MacBook Pro, even though both do come in the Space Grey color now.

On topic: no problems here with my 2017 Space Grey 12" MacBook, which looks pretty much as good as the day I brought her home from the store! I love the Space Grey color so much that it was a no-brainer when I was ready to buy a 2018 MacBook Pro. Gorgeous!

Like a lot of other people, I'm really surprised that I don't have any notable blemishes. I don't abuse it, but I don't treat it like jewelry either so I'm quite happy with how well my 2016 MBP has held up after two full years of heavy use. I've even dropped it lid open when it slid off a 3 foot high bed onto a low pile carpet floor. These are more durable than people believe them to be.

Ooops, I just realized the OP asked about MacBooks, not MBPs. Well, I think my reply is still relevant.
