Am i the only one in this forum who actually likes the chin, i would hate to not have it, i think it gives the imac a bit of character, i would hate for it to look like a ACD,

Just you, discodave and RichardI. :D

And me. I dig the chin.

It's all relative, though. If the current, white model with a fairly thick border around the screen (compared to MacBooks and ACDs) lost it, it would look a little odd, I think.

If they drop the chin, I'm sure they'll move the other proportions with it. In any case, I'm confident Apple's design will be well balanced. When has it not been?

Design wise, I'm sure Apple will have it down to a Tee.

CPU: Having a C2D at what ever speed is fine. Simply the best all round processor we've had in years. Great performance. Although I think they will top out at 2.6GHz.

Memory: With the newer cpus, doesnt the FSB go up? One of the key area's that isnt looked at is memory bandwith. The higher FSB the better.

GFX: This is the one, this is the key component. I'd like to see a 8800GTX or GTS. I think we'll see a 8700 variant. The MacBook Pro has the 8600 right? We should be able to have a slight better card in a iMac as power isnt really an issue with battery power etc.

HDD: This is interesting too I'd like to have a decent sized drive but eSATA? More bandwith. There are some good drives out there now.

Either way, my CC is ready and waiting.

My lovely MacBook is having Superdrive problems :p

I liked it, I thought and still think the iMac is one of the best looking (and not bad on performance either) PC's out there!

Maybe not after Wednesday mind you ;)

Another vote for the chin

superlatic: I like your spec's. :) I hope you are right on, except that I'd like to see desktop class processors (at least in the 24"). Am I the only one that likes the chin?

Rich

I don't particularly care for the chin aesthetically, but I has proven itself to be indispensable for post-it notes. Now I don't think I could manage my desk without it.

In my imagination
Keep the chin if it means more space for better specs.

- Desktop class processors
- 4GB or more of RAM
- Dual HDDs
- Expandable GPU
- More ports on the back
- eSATA Ports

What I want more than anything is some kind of video in so I can use my 360 with it. This would save students a lot of space and money as there would no need for a second monitor.

I second that! It'd be nice to play MLB:07 The Show on it so I don't have to use someone's television. They could easily implement it on there. Many monitors already have these plug-ins already.

I didn't see any "reasoning" on your list either. In any case, let's revisit this on Tuesday and see who's right.

Not saying that anyone was right or wrong... but touche... there wasn't much reasoning... I was just commenting on the chin that everyone seems to either love or hate. I say keep it if it adds to the specs of the machine. If it's gone on tuesday and the iMac is still made from laptop parts with no REAL update except for a Santa Claus processor and MacBook Pro parts then they should have done that same design with a chin and gave me something worth my time and money.

I would hate Apple if the next 'breakthrough' iMac looks like an iPhone with the same guts, when they could have made it thicker and given me (and many other users) a real desktop machine... instead of laptop parts in a big fancy case.

p.s. I love the iMac and the fancy case... but nothing beats getting your monies worth in a good Apple product and machine you can shove in the faces of PC users.

New Design

What is in real need in my opinion is a new fresh design. Apple has been coming up with some real innovative and solid designs (thanks mostly to Jon Ive) in their products and its about time for a facelift on the new iMac. I'd love to see something other than white but I'm not a huge fan of the brushed aluminium look (which is usually reserved for Apple pro products anyway). On the hardware side it would be great to see 2 gigs of RAM standard for at least the 24" (the one I plan on buying) and a decent gpu such as the 8600gts. I can't see Apple putting Ati in any of their products as Nvidia is so far ahead and Apple loves making the best performing computers. If the new iMac is thinner than its predecessor, mobile cpus will be the way to go.

Can't wait till Tuesday for the announcements (Wednesday here in Oz)

Bookshop!
I'd buy one if they had:

  • 1 GB RAM stock on 20" model
  • 2 GB RAM stock on the 24" model
  • higher res displays
  • 250GB HDD on the 20" model
  • 500GB HDD on the 24" model
  • a better GPU on both/all models
  • more USB ports
  • a completely new design

wednesday 3:00 AM in melbourne :(

My 4-year old 1.6GHz PowerMac G5 died a few weeks ago, so the new iMac release couldn't have come at a better time. Although I usually only reserve pre-6AM wakeups for really special events (MWSF, WWDC :D ) I think I'll be setting the alarm clock for this one. At least it'll give the Aussies some time to go back to sleep for a few hours and then check out the hysterical post-announcement analysis from the web peanut gallery, and watch the estimated shipping time of the new machines go from 24 hours to 4 weeks over a breakfast coffee and toast.

In the whole discussion about mobile vs. desktop cpu's and heat
it seems to be overseen that the "old" iMac is made of polycarbonate
which has BAD thermal characteristics. It's more of an isolator compared
to metal or aluminium. That's why most fanless external hard-drive
enclosures are made of aluminium.

I think that was a consideration with the "industrial" design of the new iMac.
Doesn't mean "industrial", technically efficient?!
It wouldn't surprise me at all when Apple took a closer look at the xServe,
to overcome/avoid heatproblems, and to make the iMac more (user-)serviceable.

No, "industrial design" is simply the science (and art) of designing products with aesthetics, ergonomics, engineering, and branding in mind. It's what Jonathan Ive does, and what Steve Jobs is allegedly very educated about.

Instead of talking crap... does anyone think we will see a new superdrive? A SATA based one? SATA DVD drives at 30x speed can be bought for about $30 at newegg. This suggests a massive drop in price. Has any company mas produced a slot loading DVD SATA drive?

Except for the student model I think there will be 2GB of RAM and at least 300-500GB on the stock hard drives.

sorry for only mentioning good engineering
or wait... did I wanted that aspect to be highlighted?

My expectations are that it will look like a Cinema Display, except 2" thick with a little bit of a chin on the bottom and some space at the top for an iSight.

As for specifications, I have no idea. I'm just hoping for desktop class GPU and the ability to pop the back off and have access to the GPU, Airport, RAM, HDD, Optical Drive, and all those goodies.

As for the keyboard and mouse, I think they're fine. They go along great with the Cinema Display so they would work with a new iMac too.

To me the G4 imac summed up everything apple was about, it was beautiful, different and exciting to look at and use, i was disappointed with the 'G5' Design, and i think it was a step backwards in terms of design, obviously not in terms of power, the G5 design is nice and simple, but just not as fulfilling as the imac G4
