Even the most hardcore Mac fan has to admit that the spill proof keyboard on the Lenovo ThinkPad series right now seems like the smartest innovation ever!

I can not believe it!

Only yesterday did I read this article and say to myself "It serves him right for spilling coffee on it!"

Today, after owning macs for over 8 years I spill coffee on my keyboard for the first time ever!

Although it is not a 4 day old Mac Air, it is my trusty 17inch MBP, it is 2 years old and I know that I would't be able to get it fixed under warranty. It turns out that it is just the keyboard that is bad, I took that out and cleaned it but it didn't help, so I will probably get a used keyboard off Ebay and install it myself! I am using my computer now, I just detached the cable for the internal keyboard and am using an external one, which works but isn't ideal.

Well I guess God maybe trying to tell me something!

It's really easy to hear a story like mine and say "what an idiot, I would NEVER let that happen to me", but life is life and accidents happen. Sorry to hear about your MBP, I hope it isn't too expensive to repair! Or, maybe it'll be an excuse to get the new Montevina one when it comes out :)

The irony... you're more likely to get money back if you tell them it was stolen rather than there was liquid damage.

Is it too late to tell them it was stolen?? ;)

Yes, I'm aware I could distort the truth and get $$$, but I refuse to do it. We spilled it, it's our fault, and regardless of how deep the pockets (and how big of bastards they are) of Apple or Citibank, it isn't right to steal from them.

Part of being an adult is taking responsibility for your own actions. Too many people who otherwise consider themselves 'good people' would be very quick to try to pull one over on Apple or Citibank in this scenario.

Hopefully taking the moral high road will turn out well for me, but unfortunately in my life, it usually doesn't.

At this point you really have nothing to lose at all by just taking it apart yourself and trying to clean everything with alcohol to the best of your ability. If that doesn't work THEN send it in and get a repair estimate... I doubt the cost will change much if at all if you do this without breaking anything, and it's really not that hard to do.

Just my 2 cents.

I did diassemble it. That bugger is COMPLICATED. To get to the parts you have to clean, you basically have to remove every single screw (40+) from the bottom half of the Air. I'm concerned I wouldn't be able to get it all put back together again (and I am VERY comfortable working inside computers, I built my own PC's for years, since the 80386 days). The thing is just too damn tiny and packed.

But, now that I know it needs to go in for sure, you are right, I may take another stab at it. There really is nothing to lose at this point...except the off chance that Apple Care decides there WASN'T liquid damage (despite me telling them about the spill) and fixes it under warranty. I find that highly unlikely, but we'll see. Maybe my good karma will give me a break for once.

I really appreciate your stance on this and hope that it all turns out OK in the end. After my mishap with my MBP today I feel your pain even more.

What I would do if you cant get anything done, is while it is away, they will at least diagnose your problem. Get the parts on ebay and install the parts yourself. If it is the motherboard and MBA motherboards are expensive wait a couple of months till they come down in price, if you are experienced with computers although it would be a tough one, you should be able to install it yourself...

I completely agree with that statement, and I wish you the best of luck. Hopefully Apple repair will smile kindly on your honesty!

(Do you have an Apple Store nearby where you can bring it in? Sometimes face-to-face works wonders as well)

I'm pretty sure Spokane WA is one of the largest cities (Counting the surrounding regions) in the U.S. without an Apple store.

Closest one is 250 miles away.

Ha, well the entire state of Kentucky doesn't have one if that makes you feel better. Guess Apple thinks us "hillbillies" don't know how to operate one of "dem daggum computin' thangies."

That is quite a disparity. I just counted.... and here I have a choice of 17 Apple stores within one hour. Life in the big city I guess.

I guess times really haven't changed since the 1800s, everything moves inward from the coast and finally gets to the midwest about 10 years later! :p
