When using Safari with the Public Beta Yosemite, I frequently get the spinning pin wheel and need to force quit Safari. I reported it to Apple but am wondering in anyone else has encountered this.

With the help of this forum, I am able to once again use Safari. I have posts on other threads but it mostly involved clearing of cache. No longer does it crash nor do I get the PWOD.

My problems don't seem to be isolated to just Safari. Switching between apps I tend to get the spinning beach ball for 10-15 seconds.

Yeah I reported it, same thing kept happening to me with Safari. I switched to Firefox until they fix it.

Same kinds of hangs and delays in various apps. I believe it is most notable on Safari, but it does happen elsewhere too. I think there are issues with Safari needing to read caches and so forth that exacerbate the issue.

Oddly, I had this when I used the public beta booted from a Patriot 256 Supersonic Magnum USB 3.0 stick, but when I installed DP5 on a SanDisk Extreme 64 USB 3.0 stick, the beachballs/pageouts pretty much totally went away...weird.

I've seen the beach ball more in the last two weeks than I've seen in 10 years. So strange. They didn't build 10.10 from the ground up, so it's odd when issues like this come up. Makes me wonder what the development tree looks like at Apple. They have a working product that can just be moved to 10.10, but they completely rebuild it and have major issues. I would expect Safari to be one of the few things without issues... but hey, it's a new Apple these days.

I notice it makes my Mac feel a lot slower. When on Mavericks, I never got beach balls... now it's constant. I have the top of the line MBA that I'm using it on, so obviously it's not a processor issue, lol

Shenan1982: Its a beta. I know thats become a typical answer to people who are concerned about the stability of certain aspects of 10.10, but its the truth. We just can't expect a beta to be the final product - or even close to it.

As you mention, they are rebuilding/making changes to many (if not most) apps running inside OSX, not to mention the actual OS itself. The stability of Safari might not even have anything to do with Safari, but might boil down to instabilities in other running processes. Just as expected with a beta or anything else under progress.

I too have had some problems with the beach ball, but after disabling flash and telling Safari to run certain pages in "Safari 7-mode", its been pretty good. Got some problems with the links on the favorite-bar disappearing, but thats the only issue I got with Safari right now.

Release quality

Does anyone above still have unexplained incidents of Safari not responding with the released build of OS X 10.10.1?

The spinning beachball of death is a "feature" of Yosemite that shows up about every 90 seconds. It's one of the "improvements".

OK, colourfastt, I'm glad that you found an explanation.

Troubleshooting

To the beta testers who posted before colourfastt: do any of you still have unexplained incidents of Safari not responding with the released build of OS X 10.10.1?

I've had the spinning ball when starting Safari ever since mavericks.
However, now safari just hangs on some websites and it crashes once a day whereas previously it literally never crashed on me.
My entire system is slower and doubling RAM to 8Gb did absolutely nothing.

Yosemite is an ugly dog

With Yosemite the beachballing isn't limited to Safari. I get random beachballs every 15-20 minutes that last anywhere from 5 seconds to 2 minutes. And before the fanboys jump in and say it's my install, I'm on my 5th clean install of 10.10 since the middle of Nov. (trying to get rid of the damned beachballs).

Can you post one of the affected URLs? Thanks.

It's not a particular site. Some days a site is fine (like Yahoo) and other days it hangs. True of at least 6 other sites as well.

Yosemite has turned my Mini into what feels like a 6 year old machine, and this is with doubling the RAM. I didn't expect to get ezactly zero response from moving to 8Gb from 4Gb

I'm just trying to follow the thread so bear with me. Exactly what beta is everyone testing. Safari beta on 10.10.1 ?

I'm having no PWOD issues on 10.10.1 with the latest (non-beta) Safari.

I've had the opposite experience with Yosemite on my base 20102 MM. The only problem i've encountered is the random Safari BB which requires a FQ. Besides that Yosemite feels quite zippy on my Mini with 4GB of ram. :)

I'm surprised. I kind of wonder if the issue may be somewhat with the fact that mine has an AMD GPU in it and maybe Apple hasn't tested it out enough on models without built in graphics?
In any case, Safari has always had a spinning beach ball when first opening it but the bigger problem is the hanging and crashing which didn't happen before

Yeah the startup BB in Safari is too familiar for me but Yosemite is the only OS X version that causes a hang which requires a FQ. I never had the Safari hang problem with either ML or Mavs. The head scratcher is that it's so intermittent.

I'm having NO pwod issues of any kind on 10.10.1.

You don't have to be a Fan Boy to understand proper diagnostics - it certanly looks like some install have issues with pwod but as so many installs have no issues it points to hardware or firmware not being as the OS expects it, or a hardware fault. 5 clean installs implies the OS code is not corrupt.

That sounds like potentially an iCloud bookmarks sync issue/delay. I sometimes get that on ios8 Safari.

When you're running Beta, you're pretty much on your own. Apple doesn't support beta. However, you want to be sure you don't have invalid or unwanted extensions or other lingering things that will affect Safari as noted here:

http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

Genieo, Search and MPlayerX will seriously affect the latest versions.

Not using icloud

OK. Next time it happens, use the key chord for sysdiagnose – as soon as you see a spinning wait cursor that's unexpected. The end result will include relevant information.

In Ask Different: Apple sysdiagnose

will do

Was that a rude jab at me? I was only asking for a little more information, and adding the status of my machine. I'm not an Apple apologist, and I wasn't trying to refute anything that anyone else said.
