me neither but my gf loves it. that's all that matters :)

though i have to say, it's a nice "showcase" app in its simplicity and semi-photo realistic graphics

I've played about half the levels of Spore Origins. It's fun, but rather repetitive. It also seems a little one-dimensional in its "eat or be eaten" ethic. There's some recent scholarship suggesting that, under certain conditions, cooperation can actually play a valuable role in survival...it would have been nice to incorporate some of those ideas as well, and would have made the game deeper.

Apparently, from the reviews, the "big" Spore is the same way.

My little spiny, clawed, poly-ocular creature is kind of cute, though.

The graphics are beautiful, and quite professional. The "tilt" playability is quite good. Very polished.

Eat or be eaten really isn't a core evolutionary precept. And to be fair, the game does have symbiote organisms that cooperate with your spore. And I don't think it's exactly edutainment. :p

I'm only about to level...9 I think. I played it a fair amount the night it came out, and then I've been busy since then and haven't really played it much. I'm enjoying it rather a lot from a more casual gamer perspective, and also of course the perspective that it cost 1/3 of what the DS version costs.

If there are more innovative / creative games at approximately this quality level and/or worthy ports, costing around this same $10 in the US, I'll probably continue buying iPhone games....

dang game drains your battery fast! :(

Yeah, a lot of the games I like do....I really hope the new 2.1 update improves the power management. What I do now, I have power cords everywhere I use the phone--home, work, car!

I mean the computer game, the one where you start as a critter and end up exploring space. The one for iPhone is "Spore Origins." The Mac/PC game is "Spore."

The review I am mainly referring to is on Ars Technica, but I've seen a couple of others in the same vein.

But don't get me wrong, these are minor discussion points. I'm enjoying the game very much. Well worth the $9.99, IMHO.

I'm up to level 11.
Gameplay would get repetitive except for being able upgrade - excuse me, "evolve" - your critter. I just wish the upgrade system had a little more depth. There's not a whole lot of variation IMO. Instead of three levels in four attributes, wouldn't it awesome if they had five levels in 10 attributes? Then you could spend a lot of time playing the same levels over and over, but tweaking your critter a lot to achieve different gameplay styles.

What's up with the evolution points? I'll often finish a level and get, say, 0 out of 5 points. What am I doing wrong?

The quality seems quite polished - a couple framerate slowdowns, but no crashes.

I wish there was the option to use buttons to navigate - sometimes depending on the lighting of the room, by tilting it everywhere I get some bad glare that makes it hard to see the screen at times.

In the 'big SPORE' the 'origins' phase is pretty similar. It is eat or be eaten, basically, though you do start to see others of your type that are not hostile to you. This seems appropriate given the level of intelligence found in this type of creature. As soon as you climb out of the ocean, though, cooperation because as much a part of the game as you would like it to. You can socialize with and cooperate with other races, and even bring some into your pack. Social possibilities grow as the game grows. Or, if you want, you can create a xenophobic carnivorous race that kills everything it sees without question.

Isn't the second way the way to win, though? Or am I reading too much into the review? Maybe it's just the way the reviewer chose to play it.

It certainly sounds better the way you describe it, and I expect I'll be moving on to "Spore" soon enough in any case, so I'll find out for myself!

I don't know about you guys, but I don't really like playing games on the iPhone. Especially because of that little screen. Even on the psp. Nothing like playing on the Playstation..the xbox...even the wii.

The iPhone is not a replacement for either of these. But tell me how easy it is to start playing when you are waiting for a train. Or on the train. Or in the line. Or just have 10 to 15 minutes to spare.
