Spotify, submitted to Apple...

I hope this is available to all users and not premium subscribers. I can't wait for this to come out in the US. I just hope Apple doesn't act like an ass. This is THE most important app to come to the App Store yet.

The main controversy would be the offline caching of your playlists. There should not be anything wrong with this considering Tap Tap Revenge let's you download music through the app.
 
Don't think they'll approve it. Wasn't there a post around here of a developer that was complaining about his app being rejected for 'downloading' music to the device? This is exactly what Spotify will be able to do, I just watched the video.

Although, I do wish it gets approved as it is right now. Would be great! :)
 
Oh god, that sounds amazing. I hadn't heard of that app before seeing this thread. I'm doubting it'll get passed through the approval process, but if it does, that is a truly killer app.

Does anyone else think the BBC give far too much airtime to Spotify?I've been a big supporter of Spotify for a long time, but I think the bias with which the BBC report it damages their reputation. Front page news for an obscure iPhone app? Pfff.
 
Uh what? This is never gonna happen. What are the developers thinking, that maybe Apple will let a clear competitor into their ecosystem?

I wouldnt say it damages their reputation, and the reason why its front page news isnt because it's an iPhone application, its because it provides a solution to one of the big problems at the moment in society, illegal downloading, which has been front page news on the internet for a while now, I think its good its getting so much publicity personally.

Yes that's true. But it's also well known for a while that Apple gives preferential treatment to certain publishers which is why that developer was not able to do it but Tap Tap was. Just like certain developers get updates pushed to the App Store than other developers.

Spotify is not some unknown app. If Apple rejected it, they would have to give an official press release as to why they didn't. That is how big Spotify is. They would also face a ton of negative press for an app that lives within the guidelines of the SDK. Apple has shown in the past that they will cave if there is a lot of negative press on the App Store.

Caching music and buying the rights to listen is not the same thing a la iTunes. If playlists duplicates functionality the Simplify, Pandora, and Last.fm would not have been allowed. Also you can download audiobooks through apps and that would also duplicate iTunes and iPod functionality.

Also remember the situation with Slingbox. Anyone could say that Slingbox would rob sales of iTunes TV shows and Movies. Apple was going to let it in the App Store with full functionality until AT&T stepped in.

I'm not saying there is a 100% chance but I think it is likely it will be allowed with full functionality.

I really hope Apple does not drop the ball here.
Perhaps I am in a minority but I am very happy for more choice and less of the all encompassing Apple "eco-system".

Do you think if I proxy on my PC an buy a subscription and then downloaded the app using my UK account that I could use this app, I have a UK address and credit card. (From the UK living abroad and love the look of the app)

Well, I've been a supporter and user of Spotify since the beginning, but I really don't think it's a big thing, and certainly not "the next big thing" in the way some of the mainstream media seem to suggest. I contributed to this thread when I first joined MacRumors in support of Spotify, but it seems to me that while, I agree, there is a large member base, I doubt there's a large user base. It's not something I use every day, and sometimes not even every week, but it's handy to have. It's hardly revolutionary.
 
Premium members? Damn. I have an account via proxy but no way of getting premium membership without a UK credit card. :(

The good news is that apparently Spotify will launch in the US later this summer (yes, that line again) :rolleyes: so if the app's approved I could get membership then. My only fear is that the content will be different ala the iTunes store (I'm a much bigger fan of UK music).
 
I half wonder whether Spotify actually expect this to get approved. It's free publicity either way - unless you count the dev working on the app of course.
