Tap to Pay on iPhone allows sellers to accept contactless payments directly using an iPhone, with no additional hardware or dongles required.

So what is going to prevent some thief from bumping their phone into your back pocket where your wallet is? I can see a whole new scam where people are setting up their phones for random 'bumps' into your wallet.

Apple Pay requires you to double tap the side button on your iPhone and then authenticate with Face ID to pay.

I guess an RFID/NFC blocking wallet will protect your physical cards from thieves.

It would be easily traceable. Merchants have to turn over a lot of information to set up an account. Square keeps records of each transaction such as GPS location. A couple of complaints from some victim's banks and they would be shut down fast and have charges reversed. This is not a new technology. We've been using it for well over a decade. It's a solved problem. What is being introduced is the ability to do it without having to buy a $100 accessory.

I'm confused. I've been using Apple Pay at Square NFC terminals for years.

Okay -- no longer confused. I reread the article; it's about phone-to-phone transactions.

The card readers are a big business in EU. You have to buy them a few hundreds then there is a monthly fee for the service + something on the transaction. Only few companies have the monopoly. It prevents small sellers from using it as fees are too high for them. I hope this will be available for the rest of the world soon.

USA only is a mistake. It allows plenty of room for competitors to establish market share in countries where tap to pay norm.
I don't understand this. My wife uses Zettle for car boot so can already accept contactless, why can't tap to pay be enabled anywhere you can use Apple Pay or have Zettle/Square/Paypal etc. It's still Zettle taking the payment but using iPhone instead of a device. This will help lots of small merchants, I'm always waiting for the device to pair with the phone and in really busy markets with lots of these devices I've seen them fail to pair losing them business.
