Just for comparison purposes, this happens on my Powerbook Titanium when charging too. I think it is just the fact that you have all that current running into the battery that it is bound to heat up a bit, and in response the computer turns the fans on. Also logical that it happens on lower charges and on old/worse batteries, as they are harder to push the current into and require a higher power draw.
