Hi Guys,

I had a question about state manager. I think when I use stage manager on my iPad Pro 11-inch 2018. It does not work with all the apps. So first of all I wanted to ask you guys does stage manager has to be enabled by the respective app and the app developer?

Does it not work with all the app ? I can give you an example, I had a pair of apps which was Spotify and SoundCloud. I had grouped them and when I had those running on the screen and when I would try to drag the stage manager list from the left side of my screen it would show the list but again slip away, meaning it would not stay there and so I could not bring up other apps as it allows me in other apps which are native apps of the iPad. So my question is does stage manager not work with all the apps?

This could be attributed to 2018 pros being the bare minimum for Stage Manager, so it might not perform the best. Also, I believe it auto adjusts to either mobile-like or tablet-like windows, meaning it doesn't need to be explicitly supported by an app developer, because it sort of simulates what it would look like on a smaller phone/tablet when windowed.

So it is not something that a Particular APP is not supported. All APPS are supported and should work with Stage Manager ?

Can someone on the M2 iPsd Pro please test this ? Thanks
I have an M2 iPad Pro (use it every day) and all apps work fine with stage manager (some better than others, since those developers optimized it for stage manager, but other apps work too)

Can you try and group Spotify and SoundCloud app make them as one Pair and then try using Stage Manager to go to another app ?

I'll try when I am available, but I'm going to be busy for a few days so someone will likely do it before me ;3

Tried on both my M1 and my 2018 12.9. Works fine on both. Also working on my 2018 11 pro.
The behaviour you mentioned happended a couple of times very briefly in every device while testing (probably because I hadn't done the gesture proprely) but it works perfectly otherwise.

A developer would have to weigh in, but Stage Manager forces full-screen apps, apps that wouldn’t support the old split-screen, to at least support full-screen and the smaller-full-screen view. In the same way that having four apps will hide the left side Stages, two smaller-full-screen apps will also hide the left side stages. Games tend to be the most obvious examples of apps that only support the two sizes because with SM turned off they would not support Split-screen.

I was able to have at least three smaller-full-screen games in the same Stage, but as you can tell the left-side Stages are hidden unless you temporarily reveal them.

FWIW, your apps full support Stage Manager, but bear in mind that the windows on the 11” iPads are more likely to hide the left-side Stages than they are on the 13” iPad. Mine is a 13” M1 iPad.

4. You can have three apps + the left side Stages if you decrease their widths, but not four apps + Stages.

One more thing… you do not need to have the left-side Stages always visible to add them to your current Stage. You can temporarily reveal the list and drag an app from it, or if you have App-Library in your Dock, you can drag an app from there to your current Stage.

Guys ! None of you have given me a solution or any reason why is it happening on my 2018 11" iPad Pro.

On my device aswell with the latest iPad OS I am not saying it does not work all the time. But sometimes it does, and sometimes it just does not...

I am saying what could be the reason why this is happening ? And I am also looking for a solution ? All you guys are busy explaining me that it does work for you. And I know it does ! But what do I do in my case ? when sometimes it does works, and sometimes it just does not ?

Yes, thats what I have kept as my option, it hides and only when I drag it shows.

You have mentioned all kinds of things and your only screenshot was of everything blurred due to ControlCenter. Be specific about what works, what doesn’t, and under which conditions the thing stops working. Attach screen shots of each step, even if a set is tapping the three-dot button to access “Add Another Window”.

Don’t use streamable for your screenshots, use the “Attach Files” button and then insert them in your post.

That’s how Stage Manager works when your windows are over a certain width; it even happens if you have a single window that is as wide as the dock because there is no space for the Stage list.

Similarly if your Dock is hidden due to a full screen app or your SM windows being tall, you can drag up to reveal the Dock, but it goes away when you tap on an app widow. This is how the Dock has always behaved with regular Split-screen

Because the Stage list (its called Recent Apps in Multitasking settings) is hidden due to SM automatically arranging the windows, you should send feedback to Apple that you want to always see the the Stages list.

Have you turned Dock and Recent Apps on? They can still be hidden depending on the size of your windows, but they aren’t off by default. And more importantly, their behavior is very predictable and repeatable.

PS. You can use four-finger swipe to switch between Stages

PPS. You should delete some emails. 😜

I do not want them to show all the time and occupy my screen. Hence I have kept them hidden. Here is the screenshot for that.

I can’t tell from your screen recordings what the issue is; a screenshot or recording are no good without a description. Be more specific about why SM is not behaving consistently.

Also bear in mind that you can turn Dock and RecentApps on but still hide them if your windows are wide/tall enough.

I dont know how else ? and what more descriptive and description you need? I have said it all and explained the exact problem I am facing.

Let me start with your original post, and mention a few things.
  1. The Stage list slips away because you hid it in your settings.
  2. The Stage list will be hidden if your windows are wide enough.
  3. Stage Manager is having up to four app windows on screen at the same time, not having the Stage list visible all the time. Are you able to add a third app to your Spotify/SoundCloud group? What about a fourth?
  4. Are you able to add apps to your Spotify/SoundCloud group if you display the dock and recent apps?

But even if I decide to keep it hidden that does not mean whenever I drag it to make it visible, it would only appear to just slip away making me not able to select other APPS form the Stage Manager list. That is what my question is. ? is that How Apple intended it to work. ?

My question is even if I keep the Stage Manager list hidden when ever I summon it by dragging it, it should allow.me to choose from the list but right now the list just keeps slipping away. is that normal ? Isn't that an issue ?

On my M1 with recent apps hidden, Notes in the recent apps, and just Safari open…
1. When I drag to show the Recent Apps, they stay visible until I tap (not drag) anywhere on the screen.
2. I can drag Notes from the Recent Apps list to make a Safari + Notes group.
3. Tapping on the three dots to access “Add Another Window” will hide the Recent Apps list.
