To my joy, iOS 17.1 now indeed includes the option to Never turn off the display in standby mode. I prefer to have the clock always on at night so I don't have to make some random waving motion at the phone to wake the display.

So... great!

But for some annoying reason, if you select that option it now FORCES "Night mode" ON, with the reddish font. Why oh why can't that be an option? Who designs and approves this stuff? Goodness me. Two steps forward, one step back.

One caveat. Your phone must have "Always On Display". 14 Pro or better.

Otherwise, Standby Mode is pretty pointless, IMO.

Yes, my bad. Should have mentioned I am referring to the 14 Pro/Max, and I am guessing this behaves the same for the 15 Pro/Max.

It's nice that you can now force the display to be always on and stay on. But it's annoying that it forces the reddish font color in that mode.

Night one on iOS 17.1 on my 14P. Under StandBy, I selected the new option to Never turn the display off. In the morning the screen was off. So much for never.

This StandBy functionality is not working as one would expect.

I, too, was so excited for a clock that worked so effortlessly at night, but I too hate that I can't turn off the red tint when I have NEVER selected and NEVER means "never say never again". It still turns off at night. I'm sooooo disappointed in apple developers that they can't get anything right that is so simple. Running iPhone 15 Pro Max.

What charging stand are you using? Last night I tried using my stupidly expensive Anker travel charging stand instead of this charging stand I have been using so far. And in the morning, the screen was still on. I talked to Apple Support about the issue, and the rep was nice enough to send me a free official Apple MagSafe Charger for the iPhone. I will try that also with some stand from Amazon... although I can't find a stand that has a cutout for both the phone charger AND a watch charger.

I'm using the QuadLock stand because I have a QuadLock attachment in my truck and on my motorcycle. But I'm not the only one complaining about it so I hope it's not that very expensive QuadLock stand causing the problem. I really don't see why a charging stand should make the difference. As long as the phone is properly charging, how does it know what stand it's on? Does Apple have something that's proprietary in their charger that no one has ever identified? And most importantly, have you verified more than one night that the Amazon stand will actually keep the screen on all night?

Same issue here. It still does not stay on all night. I honestly don’t understand why it seems so hard for Apple to get this right. I mean when you purposely add a new setting that is very unambiguously called “Turn Display Off - NEVER” and the display still turns off … it’s literally almost laughable.

Seriously that ”answer” from Apple support makes no sense. As long as whatever MagSafe charger you are using provides a continuous charge it should not matter. Sounds to me like an answer that tech support would provide if they really didn’t have an answer. Seems to me that this new setting “Turn Display Off - NEVER” is simply not working correctly…it’s not like it’s a ambiguous setting…🤣

hmm.. mine is turning on even in Sleep mode.
And that red tint is for your own health benefit. If you feel it’s hard to see, select the clock face that’s easier.

Typical Apple...who knew that all those millions of nightstand clocks that consumers buy were ruining their health...LOL. Every Hotel I have ever stayed at had a nigthstand clock, and shazam...not one of them had a red tint display. Apple needs to stop with the nanny routine and allow the consumer to decide what color clock they want on the standby screen, like an actual consumer product company.

Well, the science is there. If you don't like it there're plenty of 3rd party clock apps.

Tested the “Turn Display Off - NEVER” setting again last night. Put it in my MagSafe charger at 11:22 PM and Standby mode turned on normally. woke up twice during the night and the display was on. Just so happens that I woke up at 6:50 AM, glanced over and the display was still on. My wife got up a minute later which made me open my eyes and the display was off. Nothing would make the display turn on again except tapping the screen. Standby mode was still enabled (so it's not that it is turning off due to some issue with the MagSafe charger) and it was 6:51 AM.

Clearly their is a problem and the new setting - “Turn Display Off - NEVER” is more like "Turn Display Off - Almost Never"...LOL. I suppose I'll have to go back to using my Nightstand Clock app. One of many that not only actually stays on all night but allows you to pick what color(s) you want.

...that are apparently ruining peoples health LOL. Not to mention all the clock manufacturers, hotels, etc. Again, Apple needs to stop playing nanny...IMO. That setting is a toggle so that folks that are worried about it have the option to switch it on. For those of us who are not they need to make the toggle available no matter what other mode we set. It's really pretty simple.

There's no health benefit for the red tint. Where did you get that idea? If you select a clock with a colored face you like more, then you can't have NEVER selected and then your face turns off during the night. Of course, as we've discussed here, the NEVER doesn't work so that face turns off at night too. You can't win with this app/feature.

And the third party apps don't come on automatically when you put your phone on your charging stand... that was feature we all wanted.

If there's enough complaining about it (and I hope someone at apple actually sees the forum on here), maybe we'll get another IOS update (7.1.1) very shortly to finally make the clock app work the way it was originally intended.

I am aware of the red-shift studies showing that red stimulates the production of serotonin. Unfortunately for me, no amount of serotonin helps me sleep better, or fall asleep faster. I know because I tried.

I don't need Apple or any other manufacturer to make health decisions for me, questionable or valid as they may be. I'll choose, thank you very much.

Exactly this. I’m hoping that someone that is part of the beta program submits a bug report (apparently you have to be part of the beta program to submit bug reports). Hopefully that will get Apple’s attention that there is a problem. The bottom line is they added a very specific setting to StandBy - “Turn Display Off - NEVER” in 17.1 that simply does not work as intended or described and it needs to be fixed.

That may be true, but the tiny bit of time you see the red when you glance at the clock isn't going to do anything for you for producing serotonin. I'm guessing the red shift is for computer/iPad screens that you are reading late at night to help you sleep?

Mine does seem to be on all night so not sure what your problem is.

Make a shortcut. I used to have one, worked really well.
Here it is. Simple enough. You can even dim screen to your liking. Trust me when it's not red you will have to dim it or it will be annoying quite fast. Be there done that.

(I guess that will be your next complaint? That screen doesn’t dim itself automatically, or it doesn’t dim to the level of your liking?)

Make a feedback. The switch is there so it’s all implementation. If enough people complain - like we did with AOD not always on - they would hopefully give you an option.

I'm happy as it is.
