Standby mode turns off after a minute or so

Title says it all. It comes on as soon as I stick it on the charger, then after 1-2 minutes the screen goes black. Standby then turns on if I tap the screen. This defeats the whole purpose, it’s much easier to just tap my watch in sleep mode to see the time in the middle of the night instead of reaching over to my nightstand.

I’m sad haha. I wanted this feature with my 14PM and I was so excited for it to come with iOS 17. I’ve toggled on and off every setting and it just keeps shutting off.

It is designed to turn off just like the always on display does. It will come back on when it detects movement in front of it.

However I have found that it is somewhat too sensitive if I actually touch the device or move the stand that I have it on, it turns the standby off reverting to the regular Lock Screen.
 
It does not stay on permanently no matter which phone you have. It should automatically come back on when it detects movement. Then will turn itself off again. Sounds to me as though it is working as designed. And certainly on my 14 Pro Max that is exactly how it works.

So… it’s a “feature” 😭 sorry Tim Apple, I don’t love it.

Edit: is there any chance Apple fixes this if enough people complain? I can’t see people being happy with this. When I wake up a 3am to pee I want to groggily look and see what time it is before I move. I might as well have a standard bedside clock.

This happened to me as well. I was able to fix it by re-enabling “Always on display” in Settings - Display & Brightness. I am not a fan of Always On Display which is why I turned it off. I guess I will turn it off during the day and back on at night. Bummer.

Is it sensitive like the Apple Watch's standby mode? Or is it more sensitive than that?

I have a 13P so I can’t test, but what if Sleep Screen is turned off in focus options? Does it work similarly to how the Lock Screen works in Sleep Focus?

I'm not sure either. I've just heard that Sleep disables AoD so it could be something to try.
 
mine keeps turning off as well. I have all the settings correctly enabled. I am so bummed if this is the way it works. I wanted to get rid of my nightstand clock. :mad:
 
This is normal. Let's say I turn out the lights and go to sleep, shortly after the screen will go off. Then if I glance up at it during the night it detects me and turns back on for a while. Seems to work perfectly and always turns on when I need it to. iPhone 14 Pro.

The 13 Pro Max, the standby activates as soon as I place it horizontal on the MagSafe charger, only shows the display in a red "night mode" tint (Perhaps because I have Dark mode on all the time?)

Anyway, the display turns completely off after about 20 seconds.

Tapping it lightly turns it back on, also slightest vibration turns it on.
It's a feature that might be helpful, I'm glad it's on the older phones even though it's limited. But honestly I already forgot about until this post. 😆

I set mine up and went to bed. It stayed on for quite a while. Then at some point it turned off. I made movements and nothing, so then I tapped the screen. It went on but not the clock face I had chosen which I could not even see without my glasses. HHHHHHHH this is a big miss for me and something I was so excited to see as a new feature. I am hoping that enough glass wears complain about it and maybe they do something about it!
 
Guys. For those with AOD, you have to go to your "Stand By" under settings. There is a separate toggle switch called "Always On" which is described as 'when enabled, the display will intelligently turn off when not in use' you have to switch this off. The standby mode screen will now remain on the entire time.

Under night mode, if you like the red tint (like the classic night stand clocks) then enable "night mode"

The default setting is having the Always on toggle switch on under Standby so all other iphones WITHOUT the Always on Display can enjoy the Standby without having their screens burn in.

I have the "Aways On" in Standby settings toggled to "On" and my display finally stayed on all night. I kept waking to check because I am OCD about it. I have the 14 PM if that makes any diff. So I dunno if what you are saying holds true. At least not on the 14PM? Dunno.

The toggle swtich literally says that if this is on, your display will intelligently turn off.

The ONLY way to keep it on the entire night is by turning it off.

Well all I can tell you is that I have it on and mine stayed on all night.

The description is describing what happens when always on is enabled. If you turn it off the display is supposed to turn off automatically when no movement is detected.
 
Bought the Belkin charge stand to specifically use StandBy with as a clock to replace my Google Nest Hub. Woke up in the middle of the night to check the time and the screen was off. Tapping the screen went right to the Lock Screen.

Just seems odd they tout it as being useful as a clock or for information with widgets, but you spend more time trying to get it to work than you would just trying to do whatever you were already trying to do.

I’ll probably end up just returning the charging stand and charging the phone flat if it’s not going to work right.
