I just use a free app called Nightstand. Stays on all night and unlike the iPhone's "Nightstand mode" you can pick the colors you want for the clock. I don't think Apple will ever actually fix the problem.
Installed the Nightstand app and used it last night. Works perfectly but for me the text is too bright and no way to turn it down. I guess I’ll just have to look for another solution.

You adjust the brightness by swiping down/up. At least that's how it works for me.

It will stay awake for a few hours I guess. When I go to sleep the display is on.
That sounds unusual. If it shut down it should shut down in a matter of minutes, or *virtually* not at all. Sounds like your ST still stuck on 17.1 even though you already updated.

Unfortunately it's not unusual. The Standby setting "Turn Display Off - Never" has not worked correctly since it was introduced and has not been fixed in any of the point releases. This has been documented by many users here and on other online forums. It's not a setting problem or a user issue, it's a bug. Page back thru just this thread and you will see various folks documenting the issue but as I say, it's been reported many places by many users.

You can pick the colors for the clock in the Apple Standby mode.

Unfortunately in Standby Mode settings once you set the “Turn Display Off“ setting to “Never” it forces Night Mode to be on and you can no longer select the colors….another Apple “feature”…🤣

Maybe you should switch to Android.

Why??? Maybe Apple should get their fingers out of their ass and provide some decent code for once?
Because, if a company’s products don’t work the way you think they should (and it appears you believe this to be an ongoing problem)…why would you continue to buy those products?

In a way, I can’t argue with you. Your post makes absolute sense. However I would not get the ecosystem with any other system. Well, let’s be honest, there is only android. Believe me, if I could, I would.

However I will continue to berate, report etc the complete lack of care and skills that goes into Apples abortion of software releases. I am sure people get bored of me going on about it, and I can only suggest they use the ignore function.

It is absolutely irrefutable that Apple software is not a patch on what it used to be. When it works, it is absolutely incredible… But that’s it

I would end, that if I hadn’t got all of the Apple kit that I now had, I most certainly would not start with Apple. Android may be just as bad, or worse, but I guess until I dip my toe in that pond I’ll never know.

Anyway sorry back OT.

Fair enough! I’m there with you on being invested in the whole ecosystem.

Some days I do long for the old days when I was able to bounce around from my old Handspring Treo, Nokia Symbian devices, BlackBerry, brief flings with Microsoft phones and, yes, multiple Android devices. Perhaps the dearth of alternatives has made the remaining players a bit lazy.

Work the way YOU “think” they should.

Looks at the standby option. NEVER- display never turns off.

How do you interpret “never turns off”???

Most of us have no problem and the screen operates for us as intended. My screen, in standby does not turn off.

The question still remains, why are you still buying and using a product that doesn’t work the way you want it to?

I probably tried 90% of the nightstand apps in the AppStore. I keep going back to Natta. Simple, elegant. You can change the digit color, size, and 12h/24h format. The digits don't stay fixed in one location but move very slowly (absolutely unnoticeable) across the screen to prevent burn-in.

Even after 17.4 this isn’t fixed for me. Went to bed at 10. Screen stayed on until approx 3am and remained off until I woke at 7am.

Sticking with my shortcut to activate the Nightstand app when connected to power. Been using it for the past couple of months and it works flawlessly every time.
