Same for me: in the early hours of the morning the screen suddenly goes black. Extremely poor performance from Apple - it really can't be that difficult to keep the display on PERMANENTLY.
The most annoying part is… when I actually need to see the clock is precisely when I wake up. And that time is precisely when the screen is black smh.

It's quite embarrassing for a company like Apple, which is focused on pure perfection, to not be able to keep the display on PERMANENTLY...the so-called "Always on Display" switches itself off in the evening in dark rooms from around 8:30 p.m.

Pathetic idea!

I switched mine back to 'automatic'. At least the display turns on when it senses movement in this mode, whereas in 'always' mode, it doesn't.

Not quite: if the screen is black in the early hours of the morning, even the wildest hand movements will no longer wake it up (when it is set to "automatic"). then the screen has to be touched manually...

Weird:I haven’t experienced this. It always wakes to motion in ‘automatic’ mode for me. I will keep an eye on it early in the morning, thanks!

Why doesn't that surprise me? Apple is a puppet club 🤡 trying to tell me whether, when and why my display should be on or not. Ridiculous!

Can’t believe months after iOS 17 came out Nightstand is still broken in 17.3

There is no logic to it. The screen just doesn’t remain on throughout the night.

It’s so irritating.

I have given up on it ever being fixed...

It drives me nuts. My £1000+ phone sits by my bed next to my £50 Google Home and without fail when I wake in the middle of the night and glance across, it’s Google that shows me the time. The iPhone has nodded off a long time before. When the iPhone is set to “always on” not even my motion wakes it.

Still haven’t faced it’s turned off on me. The only time it’s turned itself off was when my phone was in Low Power mode. Turned that off and the phone stays on the whole night.

I just use a free app called Nightstand. Stays on all night and unlike the iPhone's "Nightstand mode" you can pick the colors you want for the clock. I don't think Apple will ever actually fix the problem.

Perhaps. But I woke up from time to time. A few times a week. Sometimes a couple of times a night. Have never seen it off. Not once.
Their are many reasons why some folks never see it turn off. Unfortunately it is clear though that turning the setting "Standby, Turn Display Off, Never" to on does not ensure that the display never turns off in all circumstances for all users...and it's not a settings issue which many of us have proven. It is what it is and Apple does not seem interested in actually fixing it, for whatever reason. Honestly I don't think they even view it as a "problem". Just like they don't view the fact that they have a feature called the "Always On Display" that you can actually set to be never on but can't set to really be "always on"...and Apple views that as a "feature" not a bug...LOL

This was fixed a long time ago. I had the same issue of standby not staying on and the menus were initially poorly implemented. Once they updated ive had no issues with the standby mode. Screen stays on all night.

Not for me. iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 17.3

No sleep apps running etc etc. No low power mode.

If I go to sleep at 11 and wake at say 3am, 70% of the time the display will be off.

Tried with partner’s phone and same bug.

Is it off before you’re asleep as well? Or that never happens?

No it has not been fixed and no it does not stay on all night in all circumstances for all users. This has been well documented now here and on many other online forums. It's not a settings or user problem.

I test it on every iOS release and it still does not stay on all night. Sometimes it makes it most of the night but it is eventually off. It's not a settings or user problem. It's a bug. It has been well documented by many users.
