Was wondering if anyone with a PC (Or via Boot Camp) has played Star Trek Online? I'm looking forward to it arriving on the xbox 360 so I can play it. I just hope they go down the line of WoW or Eve and release a Mac version.

If anyone has access to the Beta, could they give it a run in Crossover Games and let me know how it goes?

Thanks

It would not shock me if we see an official Ciderized version of this game for the Mac before long. I believe the same people are responsible for the City of Heroes MMO, which did come to the Mac that way.

I'll try it if I ever get the chance, but I hate to buy a pre-order just to get in beta.... the game is out in February.... if I like it and get a chance to try it, I'd try to make an unofficial port. It uses the same engine as Champions Online, which is playable in Wine with the Winehacks git, so it may be possible.

there is also no plans from them as of yet to make an xbox 360 version, so don't hold your breath on that.

an official Cider version might be nice, but don't hold your breath. the years that Cryptic (makers of STO) had City of Heroes, it was Windows only... it was only right after they sold it off all to NCSoft and left it completely that NCSoft made a Cider version for Macs.

Err, it isn't even out yet. Open Beta launches in 2 days though, but until launch people are covered under NDA.

I second thought that it was for PC exclusively.

But I did do a pre-order, so I'm actually very anxious for the open beta release. Already for a pre-released version installed (they put it up then took it down today ) and it seems to run with 40+ fps at 1280x800 on my macbook air with medium settings (at least thats what the "Your account is not active yet" graphics lol)

I'm bumping this because the open beta was released. Anyone having any luck getting it to work in Wine or CrossOver Mac?

I've been playing it for a few weeks using Bootcamp. I tried it with Wine but my Wine doesn't appear to have Direct3D. I tried it with Crossover too and it didn't seem to work either. I prefer to run games in Bootcamp though since they run a lot faster.

Playing it also on my 13inch macbook pro. Runs fairly well on "medium" settings in boot camp. No complaints here except that it kicks my fans on most of the time after a little time online.

Can someone describe the game in some detail please?

What I really want is fun star ship combat. A long time ago there was a Star Trek combat simulator or the like on PC, very Star Fleet battles like.

In other words, I am willing to look at a game where I can do the ship part a lot, the first person (character) part less.

Yeah, I was afraid I would need Bootcamp to run. I'm looking into possibly making a port using Wine but I'm having trouble figuring some things out. Will try again later today.

The game you were describing was Star Trek: Starfleet Command, and it was based heavily on the Star Fleet Battles tabletop RPG, complete with Gorn, Hydran and Lyran ships.

There is a more recent game, Star Trek: Legacy. It featured 3-D ship combat, ship designs from both classic and Next-Gen Trek, nice battle-damage graphics and voice-overs from all five TV captains (Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer) done by the original actors. Even so, I cannot recommend it; I found the controls extremely frustrating and non-intuitive, with no way to remap the hotkeys. The 3-D portion has a "ceiling" and a "floor"; not strictly 2-D, but not limitless in all directions.

Bridge Commander is a really fun game for just ship to ship combat. It's kind of old but graphics are decent and there are hundreds of ships to download.

Star Trek Online has both good ship combat and okay ground combat. It is an MMO game like World of Warcraft.

I have the beta finally... so I figured tomorrow when I get time I'll go ahead and try to get it to run in the same Winehacks build that is supposed to be able to run CO.... if I am able to get it working, I'll share a ported version for others.

Hoping to be able to do a trial of some kind - might end up coming to a fray between it and wow....

If you're considering something to take over from WoW and it be space based, think about EvE online.

Star Fleet Battles ... now there was a board game! Ah the memories ... and 200 page rule books ... for the basic set ... and 200 pages more for the advanced, another 50 for the next expansion ...

WAIT A MINUTE!? You're telling me that ST:ONLINE is not getting a Mac OS release? We are talking about Star Trek here right? The same universe whose computer graphics and many a special effect were created on Mike Okuda's FREAKIN "HANDY DANDY MACHINTOSH?!!"

What is this world coming to? :D

Searching google right now ... looks like no plans for a Mac version :(

Editorial: waaah ... but i don't wanna pay $200 to buy windows 7!

Uh, yeah, and Bungie only wrote Mac software and we're still waiting on, what, Halo2?

Pricing for ST:Online has been released. It seems that yearly is $119.99 and monthly is $14.99. Members who pre-order before Feb 2 get a LIFETIME membership.

http://www.trektoday.com/content/2010/01/star-trek-online-pricing-announced/

$239 Lifetime before 02Feb.- represents 16 months of play.

$299 Lifetime after 02Feb.- represents 20 months of play.

The longest I've played a (2) MMO is 18 months- WoW, Planetside. The shortest is 1 month of beta for 4 different MMOs- Tabula Rasa, LOTRO, Vanguard, Sord of the New World.

If, no opportunity to play the beta, it's quite a commitment to an unknown game. :)
