I recommend buying ISkin which protects your keyboard from dust, spills, food crumbs whatever from touching the keys at all. I paid 2500 for this new MBP and I would cry if I by accident spilled something and I lost my investment. I have a clear iskin on the keyboard and it works great you dont feel no real differnce typing and its worth it because you know your keys are protected from anything getting spilled on them for me its piece of mind and taking care of the money I spent.

Wouldn't the coffee have just gone in thru your speaker grills?

I hate those iskins, they kill all tactile feeling in your typing.

Wow. I had to do a double-take to make sure I hadn't started this thread. I had something similar happen a few weeks ago, though it wasn't my fault.

I sat down at a table outside starbucks and put my powerbook down, only to have the table-top collapse and dump my computer on the ground and my full cup of coffee on top of it.

Long story short...starbucks paid and I'm typing on a new macbook :D

Now that sucks! I can understand if it's your fault, but the table top collapsing? I can't even imagine how pissed I'd be!

I was pissed, but I have to admit starbucks handled it pretty well. I was able to retain the hard drive from my powerbook (which I sent to starbucks for verification), and they gave me the amount that I asked for with very little back-and-forth about the whole thing.

Granted, I'd have preferred that the whole thing had never happened, but in the end I really came out ahead aside from the aggravation.

Take the battery out and put a fan to the underside of the laptop then wait a day. That happened to my friend's PowerBook and thats what he did then it worked the next day. No Powerbrick

If there is a problem with the MB (through no external source), then yes, Apple would be obliged to replace it. However he spilt coffee on it, so he did something to it. And you have to take responsibility for that.

If you could damage anything you liked and get free replacements, what sort of world would we be living in ?

I see what you're saying, but it is a portable machine so I think Apple should make some sort of allowances-within reason-for accidental damage. Most portable devices have this. Like I said before, my friend dropped his Blackberry in the toilet and they replaced it without any hassle.

qtips & rubbing alcohol

dismantle it, take qtips and 91% rubbing alcohol. and swab away. it will a. remove dried coffee and coffee smell b. evaporate and c. if you have ocd like me and do it for hours on end, either a. it will work again, or b you could swing by the genius bar, pray that the genius didnt make a note of it in the system, and say it just doesnt work.

I'm a klutz. A major klutz. I've long wished AppleCare included accidental damage for that very reason.

thanks

thanks for the insight and comical insight as well... i haven't had a chance to figure out whether i'll drop it off for a $800 repair bill. just more pissed with myself that I did it and all. Pay $1600 for a new one or $800 to repair it. Guess i'll be scheduling a genius appointment and go in. They did type up a repair order incase the credit card company covered it. Visa offers accidental type insurance on card holders but didn't cover this one.

on the semi-bright side, $800 is a reasonable amount to have that machine repaired. it's still cheaper than buying a new system altogether. but again, sorry for your loss. :(

When I dropped my PowerBook on the floor, the magnet that locks the hinge that closes the screen came loose. It was $350!!!!!!! For them to open up the case and realign the magnet and glue it back down!!!! So $800 for basically a destroyed computer is a good deal!
