Talk is cheap. If the mini was important the new model would have been here already. Or at the very least announced when they were forced to make an announcement of the new MP.

My dream is that they'd just discount the current Mac Pro and call it the new Mac mini for $1000.

Realistically, I think they'll have a tighter focus on the purpose of the Mac mini as an entry level consumer model. It'll likely be similar specs to the MacBook.

Yeah, dual core of mobile power, and the graphics power of a Chromebook. I'll pass.

Follow the money.

My theory is that Apple wants to see everyone move from the macOS based computers of yesteryear to the future of computing: a locked down operating system that will get applications from a single source (the App Store) where Apple will get money when an app is sold, will get money when an ad is displayed, will get money when a feature is purchased in the app, will get money when a developer signs up to sell their apps, will get money when a high end fashion shop wants to release a custom version of their system (ie Hermès apple watch).

The freedom that is given to the users of OSX and macOS based computers is far to great, they are free to get apps from anyone they want, they are free to develop their own apps, they are free to give their apps away or sell them to others. All the while, Apple receives no money.

Apple has stated previously that they have no plans to have an iOS based laptop (or desktop), but get the largest iPad and stick on a keyboard - looks almost like a laptop (without the freedom).

So it isn't that the mac mini is dead (yet) it is more like Apple cannot make a continual revenue stream from macOS computers.

Every year it seems this rolling wave of "the mini is dead' and the like, starts hitting the forums. And every 2-3 years there is a refresh. I have no doubt Apple will provide another mini, it is the only affordable desktop Apple makes.
True... to a point. Unfortunately this time things are looking more bleak than ever.

It's just so hard to fathom why they would not just drop in a new cpu each year and call it done, while they figure out their plan moving forward.

Problem is that Apple was short sighted with the 2014 mini. The subset of the family of processors that is a direct swap is fairly limited. No 4 core variants.

Even with that they could have at least made the 2.6 with 8GB the base version. Probably don't see it as that profitable as how many more would they sell?
