I know, and it's all of a 2MB download. Hooray!

Also, watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKPxl5qdYhU

Plus 50 megs in updates. I added UT2004 to it, and the in game overlay wouldn't open. Then when I tried to verify my email (never have for some reason), it crashed, then needed to download again when I opened it. But oh well, I still have the novelty of running Steam natively in OS X :D.

When you log in, it gives you a little window saying that your account is not authorized. And you can't do anything, you have to press OK.

Oh well, now I have a nice shiny Steam icon in my dock, right next to my ugly Windows (crossover) one!

There is a workaround for that. After hitting OK and steam closing, go to http://store.steampowered.com/macbeta/welcome/ and hit play portal free now. Steam will now open and without the box saying unauthorised. You can't actually download anything, but you can get a feel for it, talk to friends, add none steam games etc

Guess you didn't watch the full video^

If you have the steam.app on your computer, all you have to do to get around the "not authorized" part is to launch your web browser to: http://store.steampowered.com/macbeta/welcome click on the portal ad and it will launch the steam.app and bypass the "not authorized" window. You however cannot download anything as there isn't anything available. But you can browse the steam.app add non-steam games to it and use the community.

Oh wow, thanks for that. :)

After spending all of five minutes with it, I highly doubt this thing will be released with the windows UI on Monday. They did almost nothing to make it seem Mac-like. Windows terminology, wrong font, windows-style open window (!), button colors don't match system settings, etc. Still, it's pretty great to be able to chat with my Steam friends without Crossover or bootcamp!

Does it run like **** for everyone else too? Granted, I haven't run it while not multi-tasking yet (been transcoding 1080p h.264 for the past 12 hours), but I expected it to be a bit snappier.

I don't know about Mac version. but windows beta version is already up. at least you can participate in UI early today. it will be released April 26th. I am already using it. it looks way cooler, and more arranged for information.

Do you think the mac version will be released on the 26 as well?

I think that Steam needs to gather more games which can be running on mac os x. so they need more time. but it shouldn't be June. maybe someday in May?

But Valve did say it was coming out in April. Maybe there will be an open beta on Monday.

EDIT: Or not...

Valve has been keen to stress though that the previously announced Mac version of Steam is separate to the UI update, so Apple users will have to wait a little bit longer for that.

Shame they weren't looking for people with actual testing experience, instead of just handing them out to people based on their computer.

PowerPC Users

I know there were some PPC users still hoping there would be a chance that Steam would work on their macs.

A little applescript written in the steam startup script says otherwise:
Code:
 ARCH=`arch`
   case "$ARCH" in
      ppc* )
	    osascript -e 'tell application "Dock"
display dialog "Steam is only supported on Intel-based Macs." buttons "Exit" default button 1 with title "Unsupported Architecture" with icon stop
			activate
			end tell'
		exit -1

Well, here's to hoping the closed beta goes smoothly and enters open beta soon.

stumped already

perhaps because I am new to Steam, but I cannot open a darned thing, when I click on the "Play Portal now for free!" link on http://store.steampowered.com/macbeta/welcome/ I get a warning alert that says - Alert Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (steam) isn't associated with any program. - and I still cannot figure out how to install steam to begin with, all I have been able to find for download is a .msi file (windows installer?) SteamInstall-1.msi -stumped already!

It is not out yet! It is a closed Beta for a small group of people!

well downloading the client is the biggest waste of time ever... don't bother as it's, nothing special - although it loads quicker than it does on windows:rolleyes:
