Unlike many here, I would be interested in a folding iPhone. I have a Fold 4 (as a secondary device to develop against) and with this being Samsung's 4th version of this phone, they have done a great job making it durable. But I do agree with many here, Apple probably won't be introducing a folding phone until the form factor is further along and things such as the crease that is in the fold series has been addressed fully. The thing is also, Apple is HORRIBLE at conforming their OS's to emerging standards. Like we still don't have widgets at the level of android nor a file system on their level either. But I do see Apple "EVENTUALLY" getting a folding phone, but we are talking YEARS from now.

More folks around here will be (magically) interested in a folding iPhone when/if Apple sells one.
This! I've been a foldable user for nearly 2 years and I think it's one of those experiences you gotta try it to fully understand it. Apple users haven't seen a foldable iPhone... so, of course there will be some trepidations. But I definitely enjoy the experience. I'm curious as to what Apple will bring to the market.

I think if Apple had released a foldable phone with the same issues/compromises as the Samsung offering we would likely see dozens of threads (with dozens of pages) dunking on Apple for:
- all issues to do with the crease
- battery life
- camera issues
- dust/water proofing

There will be reactions ranging from justifiable disappointment, on through to the generally demented (‘class action lawsuit against Apple for the crease’).

I think the Samsung offerings are interesting and there are people who have them who really love them, but the compromises involved are deal-breakers for me.

I don’t think Apple would gain anything but negative publicity from an equivalent foldable. I think the Samsung consumer base is more open to making compromises for the folding concept, but I think the Apple consumer base would just react badly to it. At least going by the current state of the technology,

I agree with Cryates, when Apple introduce their folding phone, suddenly it will become the NEXT BEST THING TO SLICED BREAD! 😂

I think it's fair to predict that Apple would only sell one if they figured out how to solve most of the major issues associated with the form factor.

It wouldn't just be "magical interest" or people being mindless Apple dorks, it would be because Apple made a decent version of something that has, up until now, been a pretty bad product category.

But that’s the point we are making. Most folks are saying.. they are not interested, however… as soon as Apple actually release it. Then their narrative change.

It’s the exact same scenario with phablets… Apple was firm on the belief that phones were one-handed devices even did a commercial about it. Most folks stood by Apple on this belief as well, but as soon as Apple released big iPhones… they had largest upgrade in history.

They are not interested in the foldable phone as it stands atm. If it changes then I’d imagine people may change their minds.

What are the benefits of a folding phone? Obviously large screen size. Anything else? What are the disadvantages?

I’d be interested to see what Apple would come up with. But I don’t think it’s on the development road map atm. Well, not that we know of anyway. I’m sure they have some secret projects and this is one of them.

As for most Apple users being happy with small phones back in the day, do you have any stats to back that up? Just I know from my own situation that everybody I knew wanted a bigger screen around the iPhone 4-5 era. I was fine with the phone but did I want a bigger screen. I think sales of the bigger phones for Apple have shown over the years that users did want a bigger phone.

Creased screens will make me never want a folding phone.

No, I got what you meant, which is why I said what I said.

That’s not what happened at all, I was there.
By 2014, Apple’s refusal to adopt bigger form factors in their phones was a heavy line of criticism from everyone.
That was actually an example of the market speaking an apple being forced to follow.
Apple wanted the 4 inch display to remain.
Customers were moving to other products, and there was plenty of demand for Apple to make bigger screens.
Apple said no.
Customers continued to complain.
Apple finally relented and made bigger phones… And sold tons and tons and tons of them.
That was the free market speaking. Apple made a choice that was bad for the market, the market told them stop that, so they did. And they benefited by listening to the market.
The difference with foldables is they have not taken off like phablets did.
By 2014, the iPhone was the odd man out, the one phone that hadn’t gotten bigger, they were swimming in a sea of ginormous phones.
This situation couldn’t be the more opposite, there is a small, small amount of foldable phones out there compared to phones that use the flat slab of glass and metal design that the iPhone does.

In consumer tech the Apple consumer base is the most demanding and most complaining of them all. There would pages and pages of pouting and outrage on these forums over an iPhone having a crease alone. That’s before we even get onto the drama of battery life.

I'm not disappointed. Although foldables are exciting because they look and feel new, they're not real solutions yet. And durability is still highly suspect (just look at that crease at so-called "4th gen" foldables).

People are already up in arms with iPhone screen durability that Apple keeps improving it until they got to gorilla victus/ceramic shield. Why would Apple then use a fragile plastic foldable screen that will be worn and crack by a year or two? (yeah, ask those youtubers claiming they are using foldables fulltime, they either keep upgrading yearly or have replacement within a year or so).

I'm deep into apple, m1 max, iphone 11 pro max, apple watch, airpods pro/max, homepod but the moment I got my fold3 last year, it totally changed my mind on how smartphones should be.

The form factor is perfect, I can use it with one hand when I'm outside and then the feeling of opening the screen and enjoy the content (whatever that may be) is the best. (In the meantime I have switched from icloud to google, apple music to Spotify and apple watch to gw4 to have better integration on both worlds and apple should consider this when they don't keep up with tech)

When apple was stuck to small screens , I have also converted to Android till they released 6plus. I'm planning to do the same untill they "discover" the magic of foldables.

Regarding durability, I'm using the fold3 for 1 year now and I had zero issues. I have dropped it 3-4 times, my daughter (7) is using it all the time to draw, I'm taking it with me in the beach and it's like new apart from a tiny bubble in the inner screen protector on the bottom ( which I'm planning to change under warranty). Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I keep my iphones for 5-6 years, so not interested in a foldable phone that doesn’t last that long. Also zero interest in Android or Samsung with their over-saturated camera pics.

foldable tech is not good yet. you can see the crease every single time the only time the crease dissapears is when you remeber you paid almost 2k for it then poofff its gone.
