Hmm some people here have envy on those Samsung foldable phones. Just enjoy your future new P-Hole iPhone. BTW the P stands for Pill and we all know that the hole is the punch hole next to it, such a unbalanced design.

I read every comment below. We are again in the era where phablets were available for Android, while iPhone screen size was so small, such as iPhone 5 and 5S. Clearly, we may be lag behind the latest technology available in the world when we can’t come out from our guarded ecosystem. I will switch to android and wait until iPhone improves.

With the introduction of Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 which is the second generation of its foldable phone, no foldable iPhone is released up to now. I feel a bit disappointed. Anyone has the same feeling?
Not I. The foldable phone thing as per Samsung is a gimmick. Perhaps in the future, if their practicality is established, then I’d like to see one from Apple. I liked flip phones -

Samsung’s “gimmick” paves the way for Apple to even make a foldable.

I don't want a foldable phone, at least not now. But if you think that Apple is "behind" when Samsung is only on its second generation, you don't seem to know Apple's way to doing things. If Apple is coming with a foldable at all, it would not surprise me if its first generation comes when others are on their sixth or seventh or more, and then its features would also be years behind. And at that time, whether it's the truth or whether we will be lying to ourselves, we will say that Apple things come late because Apple wants things done right.

Here’s my actual thought on Apple making a foldable in the future: they can’t do it without Samsung, and they won’t do it without a no-compromise solution.

Samsung is essentially maturing the display technology that Apple would source for their own foldable. Apple is smart to wait out the compromises and release a (more) perfected version that they can expect to ship in high volume. A foldable from Apple would absolutely sell in droves, and anyone denying they would be interested in one upon release just don’t have that tangible option yet.

Maybe, maybe not. I think Apple is the better innovator of the two. If Sammy’s foldable catches on, or is proven practical, maybe Apple will follow along - but right now its just a bell&whistle.

More folks around here will be (magically) interested in a folding iPhone when/if Apple sells one.

Or perhaps not "magically" but logically because of the way Apple approaches the concept. And of course it's easier to get interested in something that uses the same OS you're used to / is in the same "ecosystem".

Even the positive reviews I’ve read of the Z Flip say that you can’t pull it out and open it with one hand (say, if you’re eating with the other hand); and Samsung is promoting it that way, as it makes smartphone use more “intentional” or something…

And it’s like, what? You’re needing to rationalize the disadvantages of this form factor to somehow make it sound worthwhile? Lol

My comment was in response to those who speak in absolutes - “I will NEVER be interested in a foldable!”

All of the reasons you listed make sense, and are exactly why those same folks will walk those comments back.

Not at all. Have you seen foldable phones in person? Personally I think phones of that form factor should just be two displays, the crease is abhorrent and it's not just a straight line, its a crease like in the skin of your elbow and very noticeable.

I think this goes back to the Steve Jobs quote "Our job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do." In other words, people make those absolute statements because they simply can't envision the form of the product that they indeed would be interested in.

But to be fair, I don't think anyone here has yet stated they will "never" be interested in a foldable, period, regardless of any future developments. It's usually attached to something like "I couldn't stand the fold line" (implied: if it didn't have a fold line, they would possibly be interested in it), etc.

It’s hilarious to read this review whose headline says “how I learned to stop worrying and love foldables” (and “just buy your first foldable, already”); it has paragraph after paragraph of equivocation, comments on how impractical the design is, etc.:

I’ve been following smartphones closely since 2009, and have never seen the kind of obligatory-feeing hype that the blogosphere is giving these phones, even though they’re clearly full of disadvantages.

…and on the same site, the Z Fold 4 gets a “9.0 / 10,” despite this list of cons:

Not at all, looking at the issues people have had with Z Fold 3, I don’t think it would be in Apple’s interest to enter the space just yet.

I would say foldables need another 3-4years to mature in terms of figuring out the screens and battery life.

I really like how the likes of Samsung, Huawei, Oppo etc…are pushing on in this area, I think at some point Apple will enter once they can give as good if not better experience on a foldable as they do on the slab iPhones.

If apple does come out with a foldable iPhone it will come with a big price increase. I could see them starting off at 2K honestly. That would also be the time I would either stick to the more budget-friendly iPhones or sadly move away from iPhones. But besides that, I also don’t have a real interest in a foldable phone.

Foldables are interesting but the current technology isn't great. The Samsung ones are like bricks and that crease will only get worse over time. The built in screen protector has failed for a lot of people, and overall it just looks clunky and clumsy.

Get the thickness down, get the screen more reiable and then it'll go mainstream.

Foldables are the future! Candybar smartphones are so two-dimensional, structurally and emotionally. Apple needs to add a third dimension to the structure of their phones and make them interesting again!

It will take them a while. They are basically waiting for Samsung or another company to get to a position where they can make them at scale for Apple.

I have a friend who has had he foldable for about 6 months and it is starting to show some wear at the crease. The manufacturer says that the wear is normal but Apple would not be getting buy with that. Still do not think foldable are ready for Apple. One day, maybe.

I’m not sure this is a thing we need, pretty Samsung only at this point right? I’ve played around with one in a store and while being able to have such a large screen is nice, it makes the device super thick. Maybe when they can get them to be as thin as current phones along with solving the reliability problems they create.

Also I’ve had a strange recurring dream that my phone bent and started flopping around and broke in half ever since the iPhone 6 fiasco. Even though I abused the hell out of mine and never managed to bend it, still have it and it still works as well. So a foldable phone would just traumatize me further. ☺️

Zero desire for a foldable device, especially seeing first hand so many creased ones from people who bought them at launch… Apple won’t release something that is going to give them legitimate bad press.
