Here i sit... i have no 3G iPad...

and i need data this weekend.

Enough that i'm pondering going and buying one of the $99 virgin prepaid sticks at Best Buy.

But i shouldn't spend the money on something i won't need in a few weeks....

AARRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH

Does anyone think there is the possibility that they will not announce an exact date prior to shipping and just start shipping the iPad 3Gs out at some point in late April? Then maybe the only notice we get will be a pre-auth on our credit cards and a change in the order status.........

Has Apple ever done something like this with shipping a new product before?

Just curious....

They said "end of April". If there's no shipping notification by the 28th, then there's reason for concern. Apple's always delivered on time for me. I'm not concerned that they'll miss this one.

I still think the announcement will come after the 14 day period after April 3 passes. First biz day after that = Monday April 19.

It doesn't change anyone's ability to return their wifi iPad during this time so they can buy a 3G, but no need to remind people :)

Does anyone know why they could not get the 3G out at the same time as the non-3G.

Think, FCC approval.

There's no earthly reason Apple would intentionally delay the 3G version of their own volition - all that would achieve would be to drive some purchasers to the wifi model who would otherwise have spent more on the 3G.

If it isn't due to a pending FCC approval, it would have to be availability of the GSM chip.

Not a good idea, there is a huge amount of mail theft in our building and Fedex has been well known to just leave packages. I would rather walk to the Apple store and just have it that day without any hassles.

fed ex made me sign for the case, for the dock and will make me sign for the charger

Starting to think it may be worth the 10% restocking fee to buy a wifi version, use for 2 weeks while waiting and then return for the 3G! :D
(They may even wave the restocking fee if getting the 3G)

Waiting sucks!

BTW, I was kidding. I wouldn't game the system like that, but the devil on my shoulder is sure saying this in my ear every time I see an Apple store. ;)

Yes, that's totally possible. I ordered my 3G iPad and keyboard dock at the same time. Both had a date of late-April; however, I just received notification that my keyboard dock just shipped today via FedEx (w/tracking #). Delivery to my house by 4/14.

So...maybe the 3G iPad will start shipping next week for delivery during the week of 4/19? Just a wild guess...and hopeful thinking.

:D

although inevitably unproductive, who doesn't love wild guess's and hopeful thinking, hopefully the fact your keyboard is on the way is good sign! :)

There was a poster in another thread a few weeks ago followed by another poster from another thread shortly thereafter that said when they spoke with Apple store reps on the phone with regards to shifting their [Wi-Fi only] pre-orders to reserved for instore pickup, they were told the iPad 3Gs would be shipping mid-April. Same statement came from two completely different posters. I have no clue if that was a slip of the tongue on the Apple reps' behalf or deliberate, but if that holds any weight remains to be seen. Although that would coincide with the 14 day/week of April 19 theory. Not only that, but I received my keyboard dock yesterday from UPS that had an original "April 20" delivery date. The fact that I received the keyboard dock much sooner than Apple was suggesting keeps me hopeful. I'm doing a 9-day road trip starting 4/24 and would love to have this in hand while vacationing. Guess we'll know something shortly.

Mine still says late April for the keyboard dock

I wonder if they're waiting on the announcement of the release date for the HP Slate? That's supposed to come any day now. hmm

My keyboard dock had an original ship date of 4/15, delivery by 4/20. It was shipped 4/4 and arrived 4/7. So, I am also hopeful that the 3G iPad will ship earlier. As Tom Petty sings ... the waiting is the hardest part.

Here is a thought, If Apple is ready to ship the 3G and AT@T or the FCC is waiting for approval. All they have to do is ship the iPads to the customer and let them know that the activation will happen later. I would be totally happy with that. This way I can play with it on wifi and wait until 3G is enabled.

If the hold-up was AT&T then yes, they could simply not enable activation of the 3G account until they're ready, which makes it very unlikely that AT&T are the cause of the holdup. It wouldn't make much sense to think so anyway since the iPad will use exactly the same data network, and the number of iPads over the next few weeks is hardly likely to swamp it to any degree greater than the number of iPhones already do.

It seems pretty clear to me that it is more likely a matter of regulatory approval, or else Apple would be able to give a much more definite release date.

FedEx is instructed not to leave it w/o a signature. I've never had UPS or FedEX leave a package if the requirement is in effect by the merchant.

Trust me I know, but it has still happened time and time again. No matter how many times you complain, it still continues to happen. UPS does the same crap, but they take things a step further. I have actually watched the guy jump out of the drunk and post "missed you" messages and get back on the truck without even attempting to get buzzed it. The best thing is, there was messages RIGHT on the door from people awaiting packages with backup numbers to call if they didn't hear the buzzer.

I have gone round and round in circles with them, nothing is done so I won't use their services.

Not to mention, buying it from an Apple store is so much nicer and its a nice excuse for a walk :p

They couldn't accept pre-orders if it didn't have FCC approval. Search the news, they posted the results of the tests on both devices.

Knowing the way Apple usually works, the end of April will mean the 3G iPads will ship on April 30th. Seeing how the FCC has already approved the iPad I am guessing that it is basically Apple waiting on enough to be produced at this point. I think the absolute best case scenario is we see the status changing to prepared for shipment next week and shipping by the 24th. I am excited to get mine and do wish Apple would simply give us a date.

I would really like to know a date, too! I'm leaving for a trip on may 2nd and the plane ride each way will be about 8 hours, so I would really like to have the 3G model by then.

It makes it difficult ordering it right now, because if I have it delivered, what if it comes to my apt while I'm away on business? I'd like to know if it would be here before my trip or not!

Think of it this way: If ATT has issues dealing with data use via the iPhone, how well do you think they will handle the addition of an iPad which requires even more data use?

ATT's network is not prepared and thus the reason for the delay and lack of date.

Hmm...you have an interesting way to build an argument. You start with an "if" statement, and then jump directly into a conclusion based on that very "if."

Since you can already preorder an iPad 3G, there's really nothing to announce compared to the first availability of the WiFi-only iPad. And I also agree with the thinking that if Apple does do an announcement, it will come when it's already been 14 days since the initial iPad flurry of purchases. So, if there is an announcement in advance, look for it on or about April 20. And don't be surprised if the actual shipping/availability date for the 3G model is April 23. :)
