Why do developers still name programs, folders and files with cryptic names? We have well beyond 8.3 name restrictions.
... because otherwise all programs would have been named Test, Release and Production.
;JOOP!
P.S.: I name all my computers after Squirrels and all my programs by Vietnamese names; no confusion possible.

In my experience once you turn off Apple Intelligence in settings, and then delete the respective folders in AssetsV2, they are not downloaded again. However, I have a bunch of system services disabled so I'm not sure if that affects it. To people that have had the files re-download, do you have Apple Intelligence turned off and on the latest 15.4.1?

Here's what I've done to get the "AssetsV2" folder "under control".
(I realize most folks wouldn't want to bother).

Since (for most folks) if you delete the contents inside the AssetsV2 folder, they'll just download again, my approach was different:
Could I just empty the folders (in AssetsV2) and lock them individually?

I didn't keep notes, but seems to me I first tried using "get info" to "lock" the folders, and that didn't work. Perhaps my recollection is wrong, or I did something wrong.

So, I tried another way:
(what follows was performed on each individual folder in AssetsV2):

I clicked on a folder (for example) "com_apple_MobileAsset_AudioAnalytics"

I then touched the "enter" key which highlighted the file name.
I added a "1" to the end of the filename, then hit enter
(password required).
The file is now named "com_apple_MobileAsset_AudioAnalytics1"

Once again, I touched the enter key to highlight the file name.
This time, I hit "command-C" to copy the name to the clipboard.

Next, I created a new (empty) folder (in AssetsV2).
(password required)
It shows up as "Untitled folder".

Then, I selected the Untitled folder and hit enter to highlight the filename.
I hit command-V to paste "com_apple_MobileAsset_AudioAnalytics" into the file to be the new name.
I DELETED the "1" from the end of the filename, so now it would be named as that folder was ORIGINALLY named (from Apple):
"com_apple_MobileAsset_AudioAnalytics"
(password required)

Immediately afterwards, (with the new folder still selected), I typed "command-i" to bring up the get info box for the folder.
I put a checkmark into the "locked" checkbox, then closed get info.

I now have TWO folders:
"com_apple_MobileAsset_AudioAnalytics1" (original folder from Apple AI)
and
"com_apple_MobileAsset_AudioAnalytics" (my locked replacement).

I then moved the "com_apple_MobileAsset_AudioAnalytics1" to the trash.
(password required)
And finally, emptied the trash.

Now, I have a locked, empty folder with the same name that replaces the original Apple folder. Here's what it looks like:

This doesn't work on EVERY folder.
I've found three so far that seem to be immune from this.
One is "staging".

But for the majority of them, it DOES work.

There are a lot of folders in AssetsV2, so I'll guess that most folks will not want to do this.
But so far, after a few restarts, it seems to be working for me.
Very little seems to be coming into the AssetsV2 folder:

There's probably a much easier way to do this.
But I ALWAYS "do things the hard way".

This way of "disabling" disk writes does not usually make related processes to completely "go away" and might introduce new unexpected problems. This can apply to most background processes/services that are set to always run.

In the light of the problems with storage and purgeable data calculation issues some of us are having it looks like "fighting" all this might not be a good idea. At least I have given up for now because only way to have storage and purgeable data calculations in check is to keep Apple Intelligence turned on - even if it has no use for me...

Thanks for your detailed method. Most of the subfolders in AssetsV2 are not related to AI, although still pesky as they download updates whenever they please. I haven't had the AI folders (com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF_FM_GenerativeModels and com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF_FM_Visual) re-download anything after disabling AI from Settings and then emptying the folders but a lot of the "Siri" related folders continue to download data through nsurlsessiond even with Siri disabled.

Don't lock
com_apple_MobileAsset_MacSoftwareUpdate
com_apple_MobileAsset_MacSplatSoftwareUpdate
they are used for what their name suggests. :)
Probably should't lock downloadDir either.

Do you know what folders belong to Apple Intelligence?

All those starting with com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF or not all of them or also others? 🙈

Looks to me like like all of the "com_apple_MobileAsset_UAF_FM_***" even judging by the size.

P.S. Thanks for opening my eyes to the fact that Finder can show folder sizes directly without going to info for each folder! This requires turning on the "Calculate all sizes" view option in Finder.
