hi guys, I bought a 3GS last week and just out of curiosity I just checked if I could buy another 3GS on the apple website and to my surprise it says I'm still eligible for the subsidized price with a two year contract on the same line! Now Im wondering... should I go buy another one and sell it or keep my eligibility for the next iphone?! I'm tempted to buy another one only because Im thinking its a glitch and it might auto correct itself.

Wouldn't that lock you into 4 years? I'm pretty sure just because you are eligible it doesn't mean they are gonnal let you out of the remainder of your contract. You are just extending it 2 years plus whatever is left on the exisiting. Right?

from what I understand the max is 2yrs.... the contract years dont accumulate, it just starts over from the date you upgrade/sign a new 2yr deal.

I still dont know what to do...

All I have to say is go there and ask. The manager at AT&T probably won't care to sell you another phone. Not much he can do since it's a glitch in the system. (Or you are eligible on another line)

clearly a glitch, you can try it..
I'd just be aware that if it's figured out it more than likely will impact your eligibility on the next one.

I noticed the same thing. And I bought a second phone. I got my first 3GS at the AT&T store, and the second one at the Apple store. Paid the subsidized price both times.

It was awesome.

This happened to me on Tmobile when i purchased the G1. I bought it, then was still eligible about 2 weeks after. So i purchased another at 179.99. It was great, my girlfriend and I both has 179.99 G1's.

I only have one line with att so it has to be a glitch if I do get another one I would for sure be selling it! I just dont know if its worth using up my upgrade or even if the upgrade will be around when the next iphone rolls out, it might correct itself which I'm kinda worried about.

I have to wait to 2011 so no glitch for me. Thats good for you just in case you destroy your phone before the 2 years is up.

I remember someone posted about the same situation in june, they did the 2nd upgrade but AT&T caught on to it and marked their account that they would have to pay the full retail price on their next upgrade until 2011. But even still, with what the 3gs is selling for on ebay, it's still probably worth your while to do it.

you been watching different auctions then me

I thought about buying one retail and the jb and unlocking but what I am seeing them go for it's not worth the time and effort I see 32 gb going between $750-800 with free ship hardly worth the time and in some case some are loosing money. sure there is the some good sales but ebay seems flooded at the moment. oh and op don't spend that money since good chance AT&T will catch you on the next billing cycle or the one after that.

Just so I understand correctly, for those that did this, you ended up with one of these 2 phones being "contract free"? Is that correct? Otherwise I don't really see the incentive.

Just bought my second 3GS 32gb at the 299 price! I've been offered $700 for it on craigslist! I think I'm going to sell it... Rather than doing it thru eBay

keep us updated as to whether or not this works.

Slightly different situation. I moved over to ATT from T-mo at 3GS launch 2 months back and signed 2-yr contract. I just checked ATT website for upgrade and it says

You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 06/20/2010

if true, that'd be cool - just in time for the next iPhone

hey guys... i got the 3GS 32gb at the apple store and tomorrow I go and meet up with the guy that wants to buy it. We agreed on $710 and thats kool with me... We'll see how the transaction goes down tomorrow.

haha weird, mine says
You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 11/20/2010

I just got the 3gs last month though...
can't wait to get another one :)

I just hope

hey guys... just an update, I sold it for $715 on craigs. Thanks for the help:)

you don't get a unexpected bill pretty soon! so does it say you can get a 3rd one today? that's another $400 profit. I just see this a a post in a Few weeks AT&T is taking me to court or they want there money what to I do etc etc. plus fruad is still fraud no matter how you pretty it up..I know multibillion dollar company etc. oh well enjoy the money.

Good deal?

First off, reality check. You didn't just get it for 299. Living in CA you paid 9.725% in sales taxes on the full retail price of the phone, therefore you walked away after laying down 367.15 plus the $36 activation fee. So 715 - 403.15 = 311.85 is what you made profit wise. Not bad... Let's just hope that this will be enough to make up for being blacklisted by ATT for perhaps the next 2 versions of the iphone once they realize you took advantage of their error. Future will tell...

I doubt ATT will do anything if they do find out. The customer gets in trouble cause ATT said he eligible for another 2 year upgrade? Its ATT's fault

wait how much is a 32 GB unactivated, or you cant buy them outright?

I definitely would not call this fraud. He didnt call ATT and tell them that he was eligible, ATT said he was eligible.

no activation fee just $18 upgrade fee and I paid the FULL retail price tax... gotta love living in a bankrupt state:rolleyes: I just checked my upgrade status on ATT.com and FOR NOW I'm not upgrade eligible untill 01-2011
