I always take my iPod to school to listen to and keep it in my locker at lunch. Well yesterday after lunch I got back and looked in my locker and my iPod was gone...

..stolen. Sigh, well I guess it was my fault for leaving it in my locker but now I have a problem. Should I go ahead and suck it up and buy a new 30gb iPod or should I wait for the upgrade? Will it be coming soon?
Any advice would help.

Thanks..

(I just bought four).

Why wouldn't you keep the iPod on you at all times? Is there some school rule about no ipods? I would definitely file a police report as well.

EDIT: I didn't realize this thread was so old. Still, to Ms. Pink Text newbie who resurrected this ancient thread -- get a shuffle refurb in the meantime

What does Apple do if an iPod is lost or stolen while in their care?

Suppose you return your iPod to Apple for repair under warranty and it goes missing or is stolen while in their care? What does Apple do? Probably not what you would expect if the experience described at http://www.missingipod.co.uk is anything to go by.

dont feel to bad

i just lost my ipod touch and it is pissin me off big time i am bout to scream i dont know where it could be its always in my pocket so i dont know

Lojack

All this talk of stolen ipods (I've never really had anything important or expensive stolen, except for one fairly obsolete cellphone, but since I've gotten my first Ipod just a week or so ago it worries me), I just had the idea that a lojack or other tracking method might be a good investment.

I should've gotten this for my phone before I lost it. :( I'd be super angry if someone stole my ipod.

Do you have the S/N for your iPod? You can call up Apple probably and report the S/N stolen. If they try and take it to an Apple Store to fix, bam, they'll bring up the S/N to see if it has applecare and see the little tag that says it's stolen

Boom! Thats great. Now if Apple made crap products that break all the time , we would have winner! But there is a chance they will just sell it on. A thief goes for money , not for gadgets.

I have just lost my 80gb video iPod. Had it in the States, flew back to the UK and now can't find it any where. It's either in my hire car, in my hotel room or lost in flight. Can't find my Nintendo DS either but who cares about that.

Only had it for 11 months. Where can I find my serial number, think I still have the original box some where.

Should be on your packaging/documentation somewhere - if you can't find it, give Apple a ring. Presuming that you registered the iPod when you first got it, then they should have your serial number.

Report Stolen iPod

Apple does not appear to be tracking stolen ipods. They accept your report, but that's about it. It seems like they could implement something to prevent ipod theft since they have all the IP addresses and the serial number through iTunes. Who cares about privacy - search engines and cell phones are tracking everything already.

For now I was reduced to report my stolen iPod on http://www.stolen-property.com/

Hopefully, Apple will implement something soon. Ipod theft is a problem, and they have the deterrent.

Forgetting about the whole privacy issue, what about when you sell your iPod or give it away, or say you move, or have a dynamic IP? Are they supposed to track all of that information for you? Are users supposed to keep reporting their iPod's status to Apple?

It's not practical.

How is it not practical? They've already got the database for the millions of units shipped. Along with the itunes setup to handle all of the commerce. It wouldn't be complicated at all to add stolen device flagging. Yes, there's a manpower issue and effective policies, but cell companies have been doing this for decades. So how is this "not practical"?

It's simple, flag the device serial number as no longer valid, refuse any itunes interaction with it and report the connection information. Go a step further and put a kill switch in the firmware. Again, cell phones do it every day.

It's not practical because you can rely on the users to do anything. Cell companies can do because there is no user requirement, and they have the funds always coming in through the service payments. iPods don't have that continuous revenue stream to fund that extra effort.

That's just nonsense. It'd be trivial for Apple to block any itunes access based on a stolen serial number. It'd be trivial to do it both on the online store AND on the client software. The online store IS the on-going revenue stream (and quite a profitable one too). Heck, they could even add it as pay-for service. What wouldn't be as simple would be taking in the reports and dealing with inaccuracies. But it'd certainly gain a lot of PR support and remove a lot of incentive for stealing them. Nothing's perfect, of course, but it's certainly not 'impractical'.

Why would you reject the notion? Are you in possession of a stolen iPod that would be blocked by such efforts?

Haha, that had me laughing for a while.

God Apple REALLY need a kick up the pants to do more about stolen iPods, if they're stolen there's nothing much people can do which is ridiculous  Here's an idea, surely it can't be that hard to implement?:

Whenever an iPod is connected to iTunes it's serial number is read and compared against a stolen iPod database. If said serial number is on the list the iPod is somehow locked out unless a randomly generated password is provided. The date, time and others details of the 'Sync' will be recorded along with any other helpful details to track the iPod down (ip address?) The password would be given to the owner when the iPod is reported. Also all iPods have "owner" information on the "about" page, for if any iPods are lost.
what a horrible idea. i don't want big brother tracking my ipod. take responsibility for your own actions and don't expect apple to wipe your butt for you. try not losing it next time, or leaving it unattended where it's sure to be stolen. -sigh- kids these days and their sense of entitlement.

I concur... apart from the last sentence >.<
